Star Trek

Did you use the padded restraints and spring-loaded eyelid-holders...?

Stop it! James Horner never did anything to anyone! AAIIIIGGGGHHH!

LOL...Interesting sonic experiment -- Watch Battle Beyond the Stars, Wolfen, Star Trek II & III and Aliens all in a row and see if you pick up on any similarities.

I don't think so. I've seen two of the Underworld movies but that doesn't make me...whatever you call an Underworld fan. Ditto a whole bunch of other movies: having sat through them does not a fan make.
The difference is they LOVED this movie (new ST) and will line up for the next one.

You should have learned your lesson after the first Underworld. :)

What I mean is, fine, they went out and saw it, but does it actually make them "fans"?

If they liked it, yes.

Kinda reminds me of the harley boards I'm on and how they all want to proclaim thier loyalty to the brand from all thier years of riding and the new guy who just bought a harley isn't really accepted.

I can see the appeal to Harleys. A distinctive aesthetic, a sense of tradition, plus they vibrate like Swedish sexual appliances.

I just can't help but laugh at the attitude, though. Plunk down US$10,000+ on basically old technology covered in chrome, and suddenly you're a badass. Sure you are...

New fan base, like it or lump it.

Most of the existing fan base will line up for the next installment as well. Count on it.

MAH

Again, it depends on what you mean. A fan "base" would see it on more than just occasional curiosity.

When I lived in Cincinnati, I occasionally went to Reds games. Doesn't make me a fan. I usually had a good time, but I had no real thought of the Reds when I wasn't sitting in Riverfront.

Bingo.

Says it all for me.
You can be an existing fan or a new fan. This new film has created a lot of new fans. People who have never seen any other ST film are actually going back to see this one a second time.

Some people have a problem with this but that's the way it goes. The original cast is getting far too old and they needed to go in a new direction. They did just that and it worked. And it worked well judging by the numbers.

Not only that... they created an alternate universe that also allows them to ignore the previous films and go in ANY direction they want. This is the biggest gripe I've heard from existing fans.

I was watching Trek when it first aired, and then in syndication, the cartoon incarnation, most of the series (TNG ROT IN HELL WITH BERMAN!). and all the movies. I even named my boys James Tiberius and Benjamin Sisco... I'm just glad I'm only a fan, and not a Rabid Trekkie.

LOL...How did you get that past your wife? I half-joked once I wanted to name our kid Han Solo if it was a boy and my wife threatened to divorce me.

I guess that depends on what you mean by a "new fan base."

I thought the film was a fun ride, too, but I also think that about a lot of Michael Bay films. But I don't criticize Bay films much because they are what they are. With Star Trek, though, they knew what they were getting into.

Good point and probably the biggest problem I have with this turd-burger. They replaced the old trek, fine, they got a new cast, fine, they did time-travel....okay, fine. But they replaced Trek with a turd-burger.

Talking about Fringe with Jack, I realized what the real problem with this turd-burger is. I had hoped that Bad Robot would have applied what they're good at to this reboot, which is complex story-telling and detail, detail, detail. Even Cloverfield, which was not my favorite movie in the world, was riddled with detail to convince you that this was all happening on a handy-cam. They put a lot of thought into how that would work.

But both things are exactly what's lacking in this film.

The writing is borderline idiotic. And the lack of attention to detail in every aspect, from the crap-ass engine room, to the science behind Black Holes, was severely disappointing.

I get that a lot of people like turd-burgers. Hell, they made transformers II and number I was a turd-loaf just like mom used to make.

BTW, if Spock's plan was to create a black hole to swallow up the exploding star that Romulus orbits...I wonder if it occurred to him that Romulus would not survive without a star anyway...TURD BURGER!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I had higher expectations out of the people involved.
