Star Trek

I agree with you, Mark; I went on record as hating the art direction long before the film ever opened, but what I expected was that I would see it and be unable to argue with the smart, engaging, detailed writing. I was fully prepared to admit so.

But that's not what happened. And I hated the art direction even more than I was expecting to.

The only thing I'll say was that the 'Vette scene made more sense in context than it did in the trailer. He was doing it to p*ss off his stepdad instead of being a stupid kid.

Now, what I would have preferred to have seen from this altered Jim Kirk was him being heroic and being noticed by Pike because of that, not because he has a history of getting into bar fights and is wasting his potential.

Dude . . . you are waaaay beyond me. :)

I guess I had higher expectations out of the people involved.
Considering that most of the previous ST films were turd-burgers... I would agree with that last statement. Why were your hopes so I? I thought parts of the trailer looked very cheesy.

I went in with low expectations and had a decent time. I could also pick apart just about every ST film in one way or another but it's just not worth it. The perfect ST film has yet to be made. Khan was close.

Your father was captain of a starship for twelve minutes. He saved 800 lives, including yours. I dare you to do better.

Really the solitary line of dialog in the film that actually moved me at all. I'm satisfied enough with the whole juvenile-delinquent bar room brawling backstory, for setting up that one line.

Well, as I said, my hopes were high because I thought they would IMPROVE the franchise with the kind of story-telling they've become known for; GOOD story-telling. That would make Star Trek BETTER than the previous movies. Not on the same level or worse.

Though I admit I should have followed my gut the minute I saw the ship being constructed on the ground...

Besides which, you can't just compare it to the films, which are the worst of the universe. You can also compare it to the shows, which have various levels of goodness, from TOS which rocked, to TNG, which was okay considering the Federation was like a boarding school for Eunichs at that point. So I think it's fair to compare any of the films to any other part of the universe, and hold them to the highest standard set in the history of the show, not the lowest.

That and apparently his test scores were off the chart as Pike mentioned.

I don't think they were looking to completely recreate the character. Just modify it slightly.

I think it would still work, though, and even better. If he were hanging around his little Iowa town, pretty much marking time, getting into trouble occasionally because there's really nothing else to do, and he's a townie -- yet STILL being the guy who wouldn't hesitate to run into a burning house to save an old lady, because that's just his nature, and what he shares with his father . . . I think it would have been a greater setup for the line.

This is where I have to disagree a bit. If you are taking specific TV episodes... I'll agree.

But they haven't had much luck in the story-telling aspect of just about every ST Feature. So why the surprise?

I do agree with one thing. This was a lot more like Michael Bay's version of ST but I thought that was obvious from the trailers. While they make money... they will continue with that style.

I would still love to see this cast with a brilliant script. Of course same could be said for a few of the previous films as well.

EDIT: I see you edited your post. I agree, as I stated above. Some of the episodes were fantastic. Still, I compare the films to the others, it's a different breed. Khan is still in the mix and still my fave of the bunch. A high standard for sure.

Yeah, I have no real beefs with the cast. I thought Karl Urban came on a little strong in the first scene, but as he settled in, it felt like he did a really good job of making the character his own and avoiding characture, yet showing enough of the Bones we know to know it's him. I think Quinto is fine as Spock, though I was disappointed in the lack of eye-brow raising. But most of them had so little to do, I agree, would love a better script to let them explore the people more.

Also, I liked Chekhov.

I generally think the cast is fine, but I think Urban would have been a better Gary Mitchell.

I've seen every episode of all the shows, i've now seen all 11 films, I watched the cartoons, and even read some of the comics,

I'm looking at this film like I look at bay formers, it is a startrek like scifi film, but it isn't trek, just like Bay's gobots were not the real transformers,

when I first saw the new trek movie, I loved it, I enjoyed the trekie jokes and lines in the film, "i have been and always will be your friend"
"what ever's left however improbable must be the truth"
the kobashi maru
"Admeral Archers beagal" I laughed my ass off on that one, I freaking hate small dogs lol.

but the more I thought about it, the more I hated what they did to my heros. the only one they were really true to was Chekhov.

I don't think this is a spoiler as if you havent seen it you will not understand this but all this film was is a freaking reset button!!!!

Well, there WAS the lady who wore her uniform to jury duty because she considers Starfleet to be a real organization.

Sorry to drag up and old post, but gonna quibble with you on this one Dave. She does NOT claim that star fleet is real. She has a club called the Star Fleet Alliance. She refers to herself as an "officer." but she seems well aware of what's real and what's not. She even compares herself to a sports fan.

She is a kooky lady, to be sure, but she is NOT insane. And in fact, both lawyers in the whitewater trial felt she was an intelligent and thoughtful juror and were happy to have her. She later got booted for talking to the press, but not for being nuts.

I used to play D&D, but never dressed as an elf, and certainly not as a lifestyle. There is a guy that dresses like Faeries.

Maybe not a threat to the general public, but there are screws loose. Just being a Next Gen fan is a sure sign.

This from the man who named his KIDS after Star Trek characters?????

I know. She considers the Star Fleet Alliance to be on par with an "official" organization like the military. That's what I referred to.

but she seems well aware of what's real and what's not. She even compares herself to a sports fan.

But I would expect she would say it's inappropriate for a sports fan to wear a jersey to court.

And probably even that it's inappropriate for an actual, paid professional team member to wear a uniform to court.

So, why would she think it's appropriate to wear a uniform for her own hobby to court?

I didn't say she was nuts, only that she attached an inappropriate level of seriousness to it.

But I never made them dress like that as a lifestyle. Ok, James had a Starfleet uniform he came home in, but he only wore that a few times after that. Hey- this isn't about me, it's about that crazy lady.

If I were appealing a jury verdict, I'd sure try and make something of the fact that one juror showed up in a Star Trek uniform and believed herself a member of an organization on par with the military/Starfleet...
