Star Trek

Some pictures of Heroes Zachary Quinto popped up online. I hope this movie is good, but what I've heard of the plot doesn't sound that promising. Time travel again! That said I'm enough of a fan of the original series that seeing Kirk and Spock back up there on the big screen will be exciting. And Abrams directing has been solid so far. Lost and Alias both had two of the best directed pilots I'd ever seen, and MI 3 was the best of the series, although that's not saying a whole lot. Anyway, Quinto looks eerily like Nimoy.

I don't know how I feel about this. I hate how it was left after Nemesis, with it being the TNG's cast last film.

I don't like time travel too much either, but IMO, Star Trek 4 was the only movie that really dealt with it. To me, Generations doesn't count as it was built into the plot wonderfully and in First Contact it is used in a similar fashion. It wasn't time travel for the sake of time travel.

Nimoy has a part, playing Spock in the future. Apparently Shatner is miffed because they haven't approached him to reprise his role. I say it's his own fault, for letting them kill him off in Generations... twice. It's harder to get cast in sequels when you die. Ask all those Redshirts.

Quite frankly I'm pretty excited about this, while I question the wisdom of some of the casting choices I have to say that I think Zachary Quinto is going to be an amazing Spock...

I am skeptical, but hope to be pleasantly surprised :)
I stopped expecting to be "pleasantly surprised" after Generations. However, I would be pleasantly surprised if they ever made Shatner's The Return. That was a great book, and would have been the perfect movie.

If you're a Simon Peg fan, you might be interested to know he is lined up to write and star in a Marvel Comic adaptation AntMan.

Has the time travel thing actually been confirmed, or is it just more idle speculation on AICN that gets reported as fact? :) Cause if it's true, my enthusiasm for this movie just went down at least fifty percent.

At this point, as much as they've bloody well done it, I would have to say that pretty much any time travel in Trek is done just for the sake of time travel. I mean, we had four freakin' years of (IMO) some of the worst time-travel stories ever on "Enterprise"; I just can't bring myself to believe that Abrams wants to subject us to more... I don't even care if it's a better time travel story than Berman and Braga were capable of (and it would almost have to be), I just don't want any more freakin' time travel.

Anyways :), some of the casting on this makes sense to me (especially after seeing those pictures of Quinto as Spock :) ), and some doesn't (like Bruce Greenwood as Pike).

The one that burned me out was Voyager's Year that never happened. As far as the movie, I thought I had read somewhere, Spock in their current time, is reminiscing to the beginning of their adventures. That is where the new crew comes in.

Harlan Ellison confirmed the time travel angle, in that he's po'd they're apparently ripping off his 'City on the Edge of Forever' material...

...a friend of mine is designing on the show. He sez it's kind of a nightmare...but one that's kept him working, since August...

I thought Generations was the best of the TNG-cast movies. But I might be biased. :)

Not only did they kill Kirk, they killed him twice. They nearly destroyed one Enterprise, and Riker crashed their's into a planet. The plots keep getting looser, the jokes... that's another weak spot.

They should never have killed off Gene Roddenberry...

...it was never the same after that.

I think they did manage to prove that Berman was the man on the grassy knoll, though...

And when isn't Harlan PO'ed about something? :D I think if he was ever 100% content, the Universe would come to an end...

Voyager's "Year of Hell" had one good thing going for it in my opinion--it showed, at least for two episodes, the way the ship should have looked all the time (in other words, shot to hell :) ). I could just never figure out how they were managing to replicate all those replacement parts to fix the ship, especially when a good 75% of their replicator time and materials had to be saved for new shuttlecraft...

I've been watching the remastered versions of the original series, which they're doing a good job of, and realized how sexy the old show was, for lack of a better word. From the costumes to the content, there's this undercurrent of sexual tension in a lot of the episodes, and the new trek's feel so neutered in comparison. Not that the new ones are completely devoid of sex, but the vibe is just different. Kirk's alpha male pheromones seemed to permeate the whole show. I hope JJ brings this element back to Star Trek. Actually I was hoping for a more thorough reboot of the franchise, just flush everything old down the toilet and start anew, but that doesn't sound like it's happening.
