Sony Vegas Pro 10

Vegas 9 was problematic with AVCHD, 10 is not. Same machine, same footage. It just works. I'm satisfied. I use FCP on a Mac Pro (dual quad core with 12 GBs RAM), that is hooked to the same monitor as my Vegas machine. I just ran 30 minutes of Canon T2i MOV footage (5 clips) through a transcode to ProRes LT. 3+ hours. (!).While I was waiting, I copied the same footage to my 4 core i5 with 8 GBs RAM, flipped the monitor switch and transcoded. Using Neoscene I transcoded to AVI in 33 minutes (!!). I was finished editing the project including rendering to SD from the HD footage on Vegas before the transcoding finished on the Mac Pro. Go figure.

Yes, Vegas is not Avid, but it appears to do a great deal of the things I and many others need it to. These are tools, not religous artifacts. I appreciate *some* of Perrone's rants, because he does put up questions of functionality comparisons, which is rare to find on other boards. (you'll be shouted down in the FCP boards for such behavior on Creative Cow).

I have found FCP (the current version running on my *other* machine) to be very convoluted. I *know* everyone seems to love it,but their boards are full of the same kind of issues ours are. Today, I was watching the great Larry Jordan, who really does understand FCP inside and out (his book Power Skills is must reading for that platform), do a Boris demo live, and yes, FCP crashed on him during the demo..(G).

So my point is that the original issue of this post was Vegas 10. It is working fine for me, much better than 9. It's allowing me to do my job *much* faster and with as good a quality as FCP, for now. When the tool no longer fits, I'll add another to my tool box. Until then, the upgrade is worth it for me. I'll not likely be upgrading FCP, you can bet on that.

LOL! Awesome!

:) And Avid crashes on me too... a bunch of times yesterday. Fortunately, it only seems to crash on me when I do something supremely stupid. Like deleting one of it's needed database files last month. Or in yesterday's case trying to use Scriptsync on an a 45 page unformatted script... (I need to sort that out today)

This is it exaclty, and why these dumb NLE discussions/rants are so pointless. Use what works for you. If it's not working for someone else, or they have different needs, so WHAT? I'll have three different installed NLEs come the end of this month. And all will fill a specific role and need. This foolishness of my NLE is better than YOUR NLE is ridiculous. I can get a short project into Vegas, cut and delivered MUCH faster than I can in Avid. And if I need multi-framerate stuff dealt with properly, that requires even more time. The back end benefits of doing it in Avid are that I get much better playback performance, and better tools. But for many people who are just cutting and don't NEED that, Avid, FCP, and maybe even CS5, are just a waste of money and resources.

Go with what works...

(Ok back to the edit suite for me)

Well, and that's the truth of it. You are not limited to any one NLE unless you limit yourself to it. Do what works best for the task at hand.

P2 is supported in Vegas with Raylight Ultra. Not sure why anyone would not have learned that already unless they were Google challenged.

I think he meant natively. Vegas doesn't come with compositing software either but BCC is only a credit card purchase away. I can't monitor HD in Media Composer natively, but I can with a Matrox Mini 02 for only $450. Works great too.

P2 is natively supported by Rayight Ultra. That means that you can drag the P2 MXF file straight into the Vegas timeline and there's no recompression.

I think by natively you mean "free and included with the program" That's not what natively means as people typically use the term.

I always thought "natively" meant out of the box, no plug-in, coded to work, no extra software.

Well, that's how SCS uses the term on the Vegas box... but apparently, they are wrong also. Like when it says native RED, or native XDCAM. It does NOT say Native DVCProHD.

But what do I know.

No that's not what it means. For example every NLE these days has a free DV codec included. If you transcode all your Mpeg-2 footage to DV format and then edit, is that native editing? No it is not. Also see reference above from Wikipedia.

Native editing means no transcoding and no intermediates, that's all.

Just upgraded to 10 two days ago. This is a great upgrade. When I put some 7d footage in 9 last week I must have been done like 10fps. It was that slow. I put that same footage in 7D and it acted like it was nothing.

It was also cool to get the upgrade for 139.

I finally broke down and bought the upgrade from version 8 before the promotion was over. Yay for having legitimate software and a nice SFX Library! I'm still sad I couldn't get the boxed up version, $20 more for a digipack sleeve wans't worth it and I just couldn't wait for it to ship. Have been using the trial for the past 30 days and I really enjoy it, even though it isn't anything groundbreaking. The modified multicam and nested tracks are worth it to me, something glaringly lacking in previous versions. I also like the support for AVCHD Timecode and GPU accelerated encoding for sony AVC, a nice boost for web video rendering on my slowpoke laptop.

As an entire platform, it's not as robust as FCS, MC, or CS5, but then again they are suites of software. I still wish that P2 could be available without an additonal plugin (Raylight). Raylight is an excellent piece of software, though.

anyone know how to delete a video plugin from a chain on sony vegas pro 10..thanks

If you're on Windows you can go to Programs and remove the plug in by uninstalling it.
Or
If you just want to delete the plug in from a clip you've applied it to, you should see a small icon on the end of the clip and if you right click it you will see an option to delete the plug in from that clip.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean when you say "...from a chain..."

When you have the window up to modify an fx, it should have an icon in the top right that looks like a green column with a red x "remove selected plugin". Does that help?

I upgraded about a month ago (posted a few times on this thread) and I have to say I'm thrilled I did... Although 10 isn't a flagship upgrade, here is what I notice from my point of view...

- AVC Support: AVC doesn't just render faster, it can be edited much easier! Preview window shows it accurately without having to drop it down to a lesser quality. It just works better! Plain n simple.
- Less buggy: I will stipulate that on my Win7 machine it runs great with very few issues ever, on my Vista laptop it crashes immediately when I try to render! I'm going to attempt a re-install and see if that has any bearing. HOWEVER, on my main Quad-core, 8gbram, Win7 comp, it runs beautifully!
- Multicam: Much nicer! I'm using it to edit several concerts and things are moving wonderfully! What a joy! I feel like I'm working a Trinity system! If Vegas were able to receive live video signals this could be a BEAUTIFUL switcher.... I hope they keep developing this...
- STABILIZATION: Sony has really blown me away with this. Taking normal handheld shots (provided they are not shuttered super low) and then 'stabilizing' them, makes for some glide-cam-looking-footage! Seriously beautiful stuff. I can't tell you how tempted I am to use this on EVERYTHING, even when not needed.

For $140 or whatever I paid to receive a physical disc, I am very pleased. I doubt I'll ever use the 3D feature, but its there if I need it!

I've never really had a problem with Vegas except for rendering which I found a solution for eventually. However recently I'm having a preview monitor problem. If I load a project or even start a new one (with MBL used in it) the preview monitor will freeze and hang the program. Very irritating. Tried everything I could think of.
