FS7: Sony rumored to release new FS7

Jack, as I said earlier, I'm not a fan of vloggers or youtubers. I find that whole thing narcissistic and too superficial. But you can't call the man who basically invented vlogging, and is one of the richest people on YouTube, a retard. You don't have to like him but calling him that is wrong on so many levels.

Fair play, I suppose I'm in the wrong and your right I shouldn't call him a retard. Funny isn't it that if what you say is true, that he is one of the richest people on YouTube, I didn't have a clue about that. I watch certain channels and stick to them but I only came across this guy the other day when I wanted to gain more knowledge on the new Go-Pro drone. Sorry if I offended you Casey Neistat.

I'm actually more impressed when youtubers with a low number of subscribers who makes great and informative vlogging. That's something to be inspired by and applaud. But I enjoy Casey and Bloom despite them being so different. Among others.

I have no idea what this MK II camera is but at a guess I would say it's just an updated auto-focus, a new kit lens, new ND's and perhaps a fix of some other small issues. I don't even think the F5/55 will be replaced next year but perhaps the F65 will.

That has been my thinking too - probably just a minor update. I'd love to be wrong though.

However, I wonder if the update could be so miniscule that it is just bundled with a new kit lens - the 18-80? I remember the EA-50 had a relaunch which turned out to be nothing much more than a different kit lens, but surely Sony would not be so audacious to do this with a best-selling pro cam!

At a guess I think it would come with the 18-110mm f4 G OSS https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/...GL-2016-08-M01-POWEREDZOOM-TOUT01-POWEREDZOOM

It looks like a cool lens but it's way to expensive for my tastes and I don't see it as a good investment. I was using the Sony 18-105 f4 G last week on the FS700 for the first time in auto focus (I know I shouldn't) and it worked really well. I'm going to test it again next week at some festival but for the money this lens is incredible on the FS700. Granted it was only internal codec but it works well for that sort of run and gun event type work. I'm not sure how the auto focus is on the FS7 but from what I've heard it's poor so perhaps that's what will be updated too.

I'm not a fan of Neistat and definitely not a fan of Bloom, but name-calling is generally offensive to everyone who has to listen to it. And it's not a real form of criticism. If you want to express your opinion about Neistat, or anything, stick to solid examples of what you don't like, and that can lead to a discussion, where you- or someone else- might learn something new. After a little digging of my own I found out how much work Neistat actually puts into his vlogs (and how incredibly quick he does it). While I may not like his shtick,I can appreciate the work he puts in, and it also makes me more aware of the new directions video content creation & consumption is headed.

I'm not trying to preach, because I've let plenty of ridiculous things slip out through my keyboard myself, but a huge new phenomenon (whether it appears revolting or not) is good to try and understand before labeling. Things are changing so fast, that in 5 years the way we understand video creation, processing and distribution will probably be very, very different. Spending $10,000 on a camera and another $10,000 on leads and accessories might seem almost medieval in 2021.

Sorry for my own OT spiel.

If the FS7 II keeps the same sensor (while somehow adding functional OSPDAF), I don't think it'll bother me too much. If the sensor changes, then there will be a big cascade effect, and my new FS7 is going to suddenly feel kinda old (to me).

I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative.

;-)

Mitch that video is amazing and I could not breath the first time I watched it. I could not believe it has less than 300 views with all that work that went in to making it and the content is so damn funny. I had to post it sorry.

Thanks, it was a lot of fun to make. We actually posted it at a number of places so the view numbers are misleading. It's been seen thousands of times.

My favorite moment comes when one of the "audience" members asks a question at about 9 minutes in. Ross and I recorded this over Skype and then he did all the puppetry later. When he asked me the question I genuinely didn't have the answer off the top of my head and had to pull up the chart on my computer. Ross totally used the moment and had the puppet do the same. It kills me. I also love all the puppet reaction shots -- such an enthusiastic crowd!

Now back to your regularly scheduled conversation trashing video bloggers.

That part made me laugh too. "Um, I'll have to look it up... I don't have the answer on me." And the puppets hands are smashing the keyboard furiously. That might be the the world's only firmware update video with any real humor in it.

I just got off the phone with a dealer on the east coast that hadn't heard anything about the FS7 II except the rumor we all have heard. It's kind of strange an Italian dealer would be more clued in than a US dealer- not saying that isn't true- it's just weird how little information there is out there about a pretty significant release.

hmm Sony has sometime strange plans (which look like no plans sometimes..) but do you really think they would announce a FS7mII right now and ship in in 2017? This would kill some months of FS7 sales.

I don't really see any reason for them to announce a new camera in the FS7 price range. Right now nothing can touch them there. The new PZ 18-110mm will sell like crazy but will also help sell more fs7s and fs5s. They don't need to compete with canon c300II or c700 or the Varicam LT as these cameras are clearly underperforming at the marketplace there doesn't seem to be a market for these cameras sandwiched between the FS7 and the Alexas and Epics and it will not change anytime soon.

Preach! I agree. But I do expect Sony to release a new FS7.

If a new Canon cinema camera dropped for lower than $10K, it would massively hurt Sony, but Canon don't care...they do what they want.

Yep, and usually "what they want" is to price the camera 50% higher than it should be! Also, the fact that the C300 price has been lowered so much probably hints that Canon do not have anything new coming soon that would compete with the FS7 in the <$10,000 space.

It probably also hints that Canon can't lower the price of the C300 II a penny more and still make a profit-- so if Sony comes out with an FS7 II at $10K that makes the C300 II look older, slower and an even worse value, that'd be an effective way to block out Canon (and charge more for Sony's current tech).

Canon is making around 50% on C300 MKII, including the allocated overhead. The manufacturing costs of the unit can't be more than a couple of grand.
