FS7: Sony rumored to release new FS7

Would love an even more powerful camera in a even smaller body but wonder if the tech is really there. Just look what it takes to keep an Amira from melting down.

"So what you find inside ARRI cameras is heat sinks. Lots of them. And they’re not randomly glued to any available flat surface, but are an intrinsic part of the 3D design. This is at its mo
st impressive with the ARRI Amira. I haven’t seen inside one before and it’s a revelation. Air is forced by slow, quiet fans through the centre of the camera, which is packed with heat sinks. This cooling core is surrounded by circuitboards.

Inside the camera there’s effectively a battle going on between the heat-generating components and the devices that are there to remove the heat.

ARRI Amira's central cooling system

One of ARRI’s trademark techniques in their modern cameras is to use FPGAs. These increasingly versatile chips are gigantic arrays of programmable logic. You can effectively build your own highly specialised, extremely fast processor with an FPGA, which configures itself to your design at boot-up, when it loads a program that tells it how to behave. The same FPGA can literally behave in two completely different ways by rebooting and loading different operating code. More to the point, with FPGAs, new and sometimes dramatically improved features can be added to an existing camera with a mere software upgrade.

So FPGAs give a camera manufacturer immense flexibility, but they do run hot. They are just one reason why a camera needs efficient cooling."

Smoking or not smoking ? after 5 years i used metabones normal and speeboster on fs100, i continue my experience with my fs7 and my A7rII, my need is a shake of those technologies. Speedboster is cool because it transforms aps-c to full frame. An 35mm lense is 35mm lense not 50mm.... and 15mm still 15mm not an 21mm... with one diaf more but you loose AF. with full frame sensor like A7RII you can choose FF or Aps-c and have good AF. so if i have to choose i prefer A7RII sensor with 10 bit and good compression.

35mm lens is always 35mm lens, same with 15mm, same with any. I know, I know, you are talking about the angle of view. But since the most common motion picture format has been Super 35 and not Full Frame / VistaVision then what are you really talking about?

i mean i prefer generally a dof of full frame but i like choose between full frame or aps-c for my need. what is the widest lense in aps-c ? in full frame you have zeiss 15mm distagon linear and soon 12mm linear laowa @2.8 so i like play with FF lense to choose what i need. Same with aps-c. but if you have aps-c lenses and aps-c sensor it's finish. In another words two lense in one, two is better than one... . Next futur step could be medium sensor format who know.

I feel the pursuit of a full frame 35mm still sensor in an effort to seem more, ahem, 'cinematic' is ludicrous.

90% of people (including those that call themselves filmmakers) sticking films of any kind up online can't hit correct focus points as it is. Now add in a larger sensor and even shallower depth of field and it's a nightmare. Shooting at f1.4 on a Canon 85mm stills lens on a 5D mk3 handheld is becoming just as much a hallmark of people who don't have a clue as people using their iphones in portrait mode.

Even Hateful 8 shot in 70mm was a complete waste of the format except for the lovely wide exterior shots - which originally was all it was planned to be used for.

We've gotten by very happily with S35 sized sensors and even they are a relatively new thing in the digital world.

A Speedbooster's greatest selling point is the speedboosting aspect of it - not for shallower DOF but for shooting in lower light.

I like the option of FF. Particularly for interviews where you can get closer to your subject and also for wides. Most everything else S35 is the sweet spot.

Ha ha. Biggest reason I like FF though is clients often demand it. They demand I deliver... ...they demand Ronin, they get Ronin, they demand drones, they get drones, they demand sliders, they get sliders. They demand FF, they get FF, they never demand an assistant though...

I hear you. I've started trying to push for it on more jobs now as some of the stuff I get asked to do on my own is absurd.

FF is a buzzword a lot of people non production people have bought into.

Back when I owned a Red clients used to love the old 'the same camera Prometheus was filmed on' lines. With an FS7 it's not quite as good going 'some of the inserts for Homes Under the Hammer and Cash in the Attic' were shot on it :(

I agree completely and the wider field of view is a bonus too. Can some genius please develop a speed booster for the FZ mount please.

LOL. The Wonder List looked great though.

When the FS7 is set to S&Q motion do you guys get to view a monitor LUT on the viewfinder?

Ben don't misunderstand me, i nerver said FF is more cinematic or blablabla, i just said after working with FF on A7RII with batis lenses i found it very interesting combo and if i have choose between s35 fs7 or FFa7rII i problebly choose a7RII but with the addition of 10 bits and better codec.

Don't think it was shown in the UK was it? Also I have an aversion to publicly praising anything Philip Bloom is associated with.

I use an external monitor for LUTs to avoid the S&q issue. SmallHD 702 Lite in my case.

EDIT: Rudo, fair enough. I just hear that a hell of a lot so always assume that's the reason :)

I'm not sure if it was shown in the U.K as I don't watch television these days but I've seen many clips online. LOL he's keeping the British end up Sir :)

I wonder if this will be fixed with the MK II? It's my only gripe with the F5 which is a shame as the OLED viewfinder is great to work with.

He's about as obnoxious a person as it is possible to be and that whole 'I'm not a shill but you must check out these images from this camera I was kind enough to be given' schtick gets real old real quick. But I digress...

LUT implementation needs a complete overhaul in just about every area to be honest.

Phil doesn't bother me most probably because I like his sense of humor but I understand that he's not everyone's cup of tea. I have a real hatred for the squishy faced retard called Casey Neistat and I've only ever seen one video by him. He makes me cringe.

I think Sony will improve LUT implementation but perhaps not with this new MK II model. Whatever new features are implemented in to the F5/55 will most probably end up in the FS7 which I think is great as the more cameras sold means more money for R&D. The new XAVC class 480 is great and I'm sure it will come to the FS7 next. I have no idea what this MK II camera is but at a guess I would say it's just an updated auto-focus, a new kit lens, new ND's and perhaps a fix of some other small issues. I don't even think the F5/55 will be replaced next year but perhaps the F65 will.

Amen! FF is a hindrance more than something desirable in shooting video or digital cinema. For stills, love it. For video, awful.

You should watch some more. I'm no fan of vloggers or youtuber's, but he's not so bad. He doesn't try to claim he's something he's not and as far as I know, he doesn't **** ** women.

I don't understand the guy, he has no respect for gear and is like a spoilt child who has unlimited access to new toys and that's the impression I got from watching just one video. I might watch a few more of his videos to see if I'm wrong.

Liam I don't condone violence in any shape or form but I also believe that a person is innocent until proven guilty and as far as I'm aware this was never proven. I'm not a member of Philip Bloom's community / blog but I do enjoy his gear reviews and other videos and it beats watching TV. I also enjoy the Digital Rev videos with that madman Kai Wong and if you see the Barbie Camera Challenge with Philip Bloom you may understand why. I really want to see Dave Dugdale doing the Digital Rev Cheap Camera Challenge next because I think it would be hilarious. I just enjoy watching anything about cameras but if I had to choose I'd rather watch Taxi Driver or the Godfather or any other 1970's cinema :)

What the hell is this Jack? I doubt you'd call him a "squiddy faced retard" to his in person. And a real hatred for him? That seems bizarre to me. The video you posted is from some lunatic called Vegan Motherf***er - watching this video is hardly choosing Taxi Driver or the Godfather...

Yes he does have unlimited access to toys but going easy on them would only hurt his brand.

Why wouldn't I? He is a squishy faced retard and he reminds me of that character in Jarhead. Casey will be to busy filming a time lapse to care what I think :)

It was one of the first videos I found when I typed Casey Neistat in to Google and it was short. I thought the video was humorous.

watching this video is hardly choosing Taxi Driver or the Godfather..

I also think this video below is very funny so does this mean I can't watch Taxi Driver or the Godfather now?
