My thoughts, sorry its such a ramble: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG9pWMhkeVo

Thanks for posting. Tough decisions going forward. Makes me want to see the GH5 before any purchase. I am looking for a new large sensor video device and the choices these days are incredible. Between the GH line, the Ursa Minis, the A7 DSLRs and the new Fs5 there are a lot of good options. I shoot with the 5DMKIII & ML RAW which is beautiful but the hack aspect is always a little scary.

I just tested both Slog settings and didnt get this result. The sun was solid with no black hole.

I've just spent the day shooting on location.

I noticed this in a test, on a filament in a bulb and indeed i saw this on location with the sun. I've never seen this before or on the A7s. It's an extreme of contrast though, you really have to push it but it can be done. This was SLog2/SGamut3.cine - not sure if it's the .cine thats new now.

Not a huge deal, i saw it once and it wasn't even a shot i was looking for plus balancing exposure got rid of it.

I'm only just back and slowly sorting through the footage - generally i'm happy. It's really nice to be able to just stuff everything into a back pack with tripod - and record 4K (I was recording internal and O7Q). One annoying thing was recording internal AND HDMI turned off the display, so i couldn't use the EVF in that mode. I've peeked through some footage and so far am pleased with the results.

cheers

Today I have read the first report for overheating of the A7SII while filming 4K for an event.
The guy reported overheating issues after filming for 8 minutes.
Even if this is possibly a bad unit, it appears that 4k is not yet stable for people shooting events.
After reading this I feel dissapointed because I have recently ordered both the A7rII and the A7sII, which I should receive in a few days, hoping they will cover all my needs for event coverage (doing both photography and videography)...

A7S II Raw Stills (Canon 50mm F1.4, Canon 24-70 F2.8L II, MB IV adapter):

Pretty good color for stills & skin tones (other shots not posted show Sony is getting closer to Canon but not quite there for color science).

Nice shots jcs, any chance you'd mind uploading those or other raw files from the A7SII for us to have a play with?

I've been thinking about this and I see no point in getting an a7S II if it doesn't have all the DR that slog3 is supposed to have.

The a7S II and the a7R II are about the same price. They are very similar in all ways, except the a7S II should be better in extremely low light and seems to overheat less, and the a7R II has 42 Mpix and great AF for stills. The tipping point for video shooters should be improved DR thanks to slog3, but if that is not there, it's very difficult to go for an a7S II instead of an a7R II.

The a7R II should have the improved color of the a7S II with respect to the a7S, right?

How good is lowlight in S35 on the A7S II compared to the A7R II? Is the RS in S35 on the A7S II good enough for handheld?

Not sure why the a7rii would necessarily have better color. I'm considering trading my a7rii for an a7sii just for the better 1080p and I miss never having to worry about having enough light in some situations. Also I've found the 4k internal codec to be pretty flimsy and doesn't handle noise well so the cleaner noose of the a7sii might go a long way for 4k internal shooting

Not interested. I'll wait for the a7III or a7IV with internal 4K60 and actual slog3, with more mpix and great AF for stills, for $1700 instead of $3200.
I'm joking, of course, but there's some truth in there: these things are coming out so fast, and depreciating so much in the first year, that waiting for the cheap non-specialty model to get all the goodies is a very reasonable option.

Obviously, it's subjective and I respect that. But in my opinion, the A7SII has enough meaningful advancements over its predecessor to warrant its purchase. Make no mistake, when the III and IV versions are released, there well be a host of other wishlist items not included that will, again, give one pause. For me, the II solves a number of shortcomings that were sorely missed in the original version. And more importantly, it probably has enough threshold features for me to sit-out one or two future versions of the camera without feeling that I am behind the curve.
