Snow Scenes

Re: Snow Scenes

Mmmmm....duck! I ate Peking duck last night... ;D

Oh.. sorry, beautiful footage!

If you shoot letterbox 4:3 and uprez it, are you just doing the 2:35 cropping of the fake 16:9?

For the uprez program, are you uprezzing a frame at a time manually or the full video in one uprez encode?

Re: Snow Scenes

Thanks for the comments. I've answered all those questions extensively in the top post in the Technical section of this board.

Re: Snow Scenes

Looks great, you should come out to the lake in front of my place in ohio, I've got 8 swans walking around on the ice.

Re: Snow Scenes

The latest version is noticably better in the encoding. What did you do differently?

As far as complements, it's been said on this and other threads many times as to the quality and uniqueness of your work. I can't wait for the Disjecta TV screensaver DVD you come out with, I'm definately going to be a customer.

P.S. the higher shutter speed really makes for very attractive snow footage.

Re: Snow Scenes

I always go in knowing it will be impressive and yet I still keep getting floored. Well done again!

I hate to see you living in such squalor though. We need to start a fund and get you a decent place to live. :(

Re: Snow Scenes

Dude... this is awesome.. the way you evoke emotion from those images is really beautiful. I look forward to seeing more.

Re: Snow Scenes

These are beautiful images! I enjoyed the colors and the dynamics of the camera. Being what this is, scenery footage i watched it as if it was Magnolia alone and non stop! Good going!

disjecta:

What wave sound software do you use to download 5.1 sound? Do you download it as a WAV,OMF or another method? I'm trying to use Sonar 4 and Avid together. Or is it native to the BMG clips that come that way?. Because the music quality is awesome.

Re: Snow Scenes

I'm not using 5.1 sound, just regular 2-track stereo. Any editing I do is either in Audition 1.5 or Soundforge 7.

Re: Snow Scenes

Wow!
that looks really beautiful...
did you film that with a 16:9 lens, or did you squeeze that widescreen "in camera"?
really fine work.

Patrick

Re: Snow Scenes

Thanks Patrick. Shot in letterbox mode and uprezzed using Photozoom pro as documented at the top of the Technical section of this board.

Re: Snow Scenes

its awesome... I think I can easily reach the lake...as now I know it so well. :D

Re: Snow Scenes

I know it's art, but the "look" is achieved through technology.
Right?

The look is pretty much untweaked as far as anything drastic goes. The master ped is set to about -5 throughout but the various settings on the camera have changed through all these pieces. What is consistent is that the saturation is always at +4

Shutter speed, lens filters, colour correction?

The only color correction I do is to adjust for white & black balance inaccuracies if there are any. Shutter speed is generally 1/48 for most shots. 1/120 for snow shots and for night shots, I use 30p with the slowest shutter speed available: 1/4. I do not use filters aside from NDs.

Do you use a field monitor, DV Rack?

No field monitor, no DV Rack. All I do is white balance and trust my instincts.

Do you achieve a lot of the look in post?

I've occasionally enhanced some of the look using mild magic bullet effects (very rarely) but generally there is very little done in post.

Also are all of the examples 24 p?
Aside from the night shots taken from the car at the beginning of Brackendale, everything is 24pa.

Re: Snow Scenes

Wow, looks like the person with all the questions I just answered just withdrew their post... weird.

Re: Snow Scenes

Hi Disjecta,

You mentioned saturation at +4...what setting does that correspond to on the 100?...chroma level, chroma phase, color temp.
Also, for the music, does BMG allow you to download sample files or do you pay before you use. I am signed up on their site but don't see how to sample music. I like your choice of music.
Thanks
