GH4 SLR Magic 2x Anamorphot

Some samples. Taking lens was a SLR Magic APO-HyperPrime 50mm T2.1 PL.

Nice. 2x anamorphic would be great. 1.3x anamorphic never really felt right to me. I'd rather shoot in 16x9 and crop. But with 2x anamorphic and a GH4 in 4x3 mode... that's something else.

2x anamorphic on a 4x3 frame gives you a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. on a 16x9 frame, it's unconventionally wider, although you'd still have the option to crop image area on the sides to achieve 2.39:1.

How come?

Is 4096x2160 or 3840x2160 the 4x3 format by any chance? Can anyone explain to me?
I don't know what the pixel dimensions will be for the 4x3 photo movie mode, but presumably by using a 2x anamorphic lens you'll get more resolution than by shooting in regular 4K and cropping the top and bottom for a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. And you'll get the lovely anamorphic artifacts (elongated vertical highlight ovals and horizontal lens flares) which you don't get when cropping down footage in post.

The 2x anamorphot I'm told is due to go on sale at $1199 by the summer. I've got one of the units for test today, a design improvement has been made over the 1.33x, the locking screws are no longer needed, instead it has a push forward release mechanism for alignment. My initial impressions of the build quality are very good both in look and feel, it's noticeably bigger and heavier than the 1.33x.

Are you able to post some samples? I'm most curious about whether it delivers oval shaped bokeh, or what i've seen Kholi describe as "smeary stars" like the 1.33x version.

I'm working on a comparison with the 1.33x, I'll upload to youtube in 5k ana when its finished.

Here's the SLR Magic 2x Anamorphot, GH4 4k 4:3, Sigma 85mm 1.4 EX DG HSM, .64 speedbooster probably around 5.6

thanks. appreciate the comparison. i wonder if a combination of the 1.33x Anamorphot with one of my laser-cut oval bokeh filters (I mount them to the rear of my lenses) wouldn't get me closer to the look I'd want. Kholi experimented with this combo here...

I worry that the SLR Magic 2x isn't conducive to producing the oval bokeh I'd hoped for. Here's another sample that was posted on Facebook today.

I will do once I've got spare time to get out and test it meaningfully. Good to see Plasmasmp is doing a comparison with the 1.33x that'll be useful.

The night shot with the tree looks misaligned. I've got the 1.33x and its fairly easy to get it slightly misaligned. I'm looking forward to seeing some more moving footage on this.

That's a valid point, you wouldn't expect sloping lights if the anamorphic adapter was aligned correctly.

Looking at some videos of even the 1.33x you can get nice looking bokeh on that, as in the following video.

The alignment is dead on horizontal for flare. I've had enough anamorphic lenses over the years to know how to get the alignment correct. :)
