Slo-Mo and REDCODE RAW questions...

Am I misunderstanding something? I seem to remember discussion of a 32GB or 64GB internal [in-body] flash drive.
There is... but apparently that's not what they're calling "onboard."

Confused yet? :)

Yeah, Flash is onboard, but the RED-DRIVE is no longer. It was in the past, hence we're all talking about onboard options. Day-to-day work terminology getting out.

- Flash you slot into the flash module (camera body)
- RED-DRIVE you attach near / to the camera

Got it. So I could record using the Flash drive with no external attachments [other than the battery]?
Yes. Which is good! :) But apparently there aren't any speed increases/advantages to using an external drive (ala RED-DRIVE or REDFLASH). So, you get additional capacity while using those (which you're probably going to need), but no better fps or recording options. For that, you need the RAID system, or recording out through the high-speed port.

Fantastic. Not to pull this off-topic, but you stated that it's flash that you slot into the camera body... is that to say that it's not a single fixed drive in the body? That it's more of a removable flash media [akin to P2 functionality... but bigger]?

I just want to make sure I am following all this. Is this right...

1) The Red Drive is actually more like a Firestore device. It needs to run from a cable to a physical drive somewhere near the camera (like strapped to the tripod, DP, or mounted under or on the camera, like the cineporter).

2) In order to shoot 60fps, you will have to either shoot 2k [scaled or windowed?], or you have to hook the camera up to a raid array [any old raid array, or just the Red Raid array?]

Question: How practical will it be to shoot 60fps Steadicam or handheld in an outdoor location while tethered to the raid array? What type of cable are we talking about? What type of power is required to run the raid array?

thanks

Primary recording options - (all specs subject to change)

4K RAW, compressed with REDCODE. Recorded to RED-DRIVE or REDFLASH. Frame rates - variable 1 - 30fps.

4.0/4.5K RAW, uncompressed. Recorded via high speed data port to external custom disk array or RAM disk. Frame rates - variable 1 - 60fps.

2K RAW, compressed with REDCODE. Recorded to RED-DRIVE or REDFLASH. Frame rates - variable 1 - 60fps.

2K RAW, uncompressed. Recorded via high speed data port to external custom disk array or RAM disk. Frame rates - variable 1 - 120fps.

2K RGB or 1080p compressed with REDCODE. Recorded to RED-DRIVE or REDFLASH. Frame rates - variable 1 - 60fps. From 4K RAW or 2K RAW original frame.

2K RGB or 1080p uncompressed. Recorded to external disk array over dual link HD-SDI. Frame rates 24 and / or 25fps. From 4K RAW or 2K RAW original frame.

720p compressed with REDCODE. Recorded to RED-DRIVE or REDFLASH. Frame rates - variable 1 - 60fps from 4K RAW original frame, 120fps from 2K RAW original frame.

4K to 2K in camera ?

4K to 2K in camera ?

The answer to the 4K to 2K in camera scaling question is 4K RAW to 2K RGB is possible, but that 4K RAW to 2K RAW is not. However we do understand why people are asking for this, and if it can be worked out how to do it, then we'll let everyone know.

I'm a little unclear. Does this use the full sensor? Regular 35mm lenses with standard full-chip DOF?

Would it be possible to have some form of portable battery driven external device that could take "4K RAW @ 60 fps" from the high speed data port and compress it to "4K RAW @ 60fps compressed REDCODE" in realtime and then send it over to be stored on a regular RED-DRIVE or similar.

Maybe a specialized third party attachment, if there is no powerbook fast enough, like a "RED brain DUO". This suggestion is to keep the information out of the camera as large as possible, while the storage drives remain small.

Perhaps that way it would be possible to shoot 4K at high frame rates in the mountains and deserts without bringing a huge RAID.

Graeme or Stuart:

Back in mid October Stuart posted some specs which included this:

"Internal / Local : (REDCODE to RED-FLASH or RED-DRIVE etc)
720p @ 1 - 120fps"

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=735760#post735760

I understand if this has changed but it would be a big bummer for those of us who are interested in high speed but can't afford a raid.

Is RED (at all) open to considering some low(er) res means of recording higher than 60 fps to RED-FLASH or RED-DRIVE? Perhaps a super windowed mode @ 720p or a more compressed form of REDCODE for 2K windowed? I know that you guys are not eager to degrade your stunning images, but 120 fps would be a HUGE FEATURE for those of us who can't afford uncompressed.

2K RAW compressed with REDCODE is windowed only. They keep leaving that out (which is why I think it's getting confusing), but as Stuart has just reiterated, the answer to the 4K to 2K in camera scaling question is 4K RAW to 2K RGB is possible, but that 4K RAW to 2K RAW is not. However, you can shoot 4K RAW with REDCODE (we really need a name for this!) :) and then downconvert to 2K in post with REDCINE, which is effectively giving you your 2K image with all of the quality benefits of RAW. The only downside to this method, obviously, is you have a max framerate of 30p. Unless you have a "custom disk array" or RAM disk (I am assuming this also includes RED-RAID, since it wasn't mentioned), you're going to have to make some tradeoffs.

Hmmm.... I plan to shoot about 10% of my movie overcranked, on location, so this is quite an issue for me.

In general, it probably will effect music video guys disproportionately as well.

So if I want to shoot overcranked, compressed stuff, I have to go with the windowed 2K or 2K RGB? I have not followed the discussions here about shooting windowed 2K. Does that change DOF or effective focal length?
Is 2K RGB compressed?

You can shoot 4K overcranked to 60p, but you can't do it with the onboard FLASH or with REDFLASH or RED-DRIVE. You'd need an "external custom disk array or RAM disk" (I'm assuming RED-RAID works here too).

Any idea what we're talking about in terms of the raid array? Something I could power in the field? What kind of cable is running to it?

This is a corker :)

RED dictionary in the works. ;)

I was intending on possibly shooting 2K if I was doing a project that required longer takes, or improv type drama etc...(uninterupted recording). Since I have no interest in windowed mode, I suppose that's out.

I wonder if the 2K RGB will be more than 27MB's ? If so, then I don't see why you'd shoot it instead of 4K, unless you wanted that 60fps. Has any of the RED team compared 2K RGB with 4K RAW ? If you're finishing 2K, then it should intercut nicely.

Where do I reserve the RED RAID, and is it a trolly size, a double decker bus, or a G5 size ?

PS - You really need to update that format chart on your site.;p

I'm working on it. Right now it feels like there are 100 papers strewn all over the floor. :)

Things keep changing too - which isn't a bad thing - but that makes things more difficult. I have realized a few things within this last discussion that I wasn't aware of previously (some not for the better), however, and I don't think I'm the only one. I don't think they gave out bad information, it's just a challenge to put all of the pieces together right now.

And you're right... the outdated table on red.com doesn't help. :-P

This is the latest image I've received from the Red team, but no pics yet of the final unit... ;-)
