GH4 Sigh. Disappearing screen info is here to stay.

vtwiz, this thread is like complaining about getting a new set of Taylor made clubs for less than a grand, then complaining that it doesn't come with a towel that says target on it. Like the set you can buy from target. Directors like to look at a clear screen to see the composition of the shot.. Techie's like to look at a time code and a blinking light that states 24P next to it. I'd like a $250 camera as well as a $1600 camera to have the option. Hell I'd like to have a camera that comes with 2 7" 4k monitors and options up the turd cutter, but alas we are stuck with the biggest pile of garbage that requires you to tap the screen to stare at the time code. I think you need to get past it, or throw rocks at the Panasonic plant, and eggs at the offices if this upsets you to no end.

But seriously if this is what you have to complain about, then I suggest you go with something that has that one particular option without everything else the panasonic does. Like this? I am just sharing options for you. There is a sony forums that you can post about the limited options and such available on that cam. But I can bet that you can read the time code in an interview without lifting a finger.

Kevin, It is nothing like your example of a free towel with a set of clubs. I'm not asking for anything extra for free. Again, take a look at the title of the thread. It was not started by me and is about how disappointing it is that this feature exists. Why shouldn't I also be able to be disappointed and speak about it like others here?

Things don't change when people just shut up and put up.

It doesn't change when they whine ad finitum like Vt does either. He even complained the rec light was too small many forums back- ahh les whats it like to know a little about a lot.
Seems GH4 didn't care either.

We accept our fate and will forever remain silent on the issue. Please release the doves (preferably in 1080/60 fps).

I didn't start this thread. I'm just joining the conversation. Is there a problem with that?

No there isn't a problem with that at all. 11 pages of a small annoyance to most is beyond pointless in my opinion. Panasonic has listened to customers and delivered a stellar camera. Your complaints in this thread aren't even on their radar especially because the GH4 will sell very well as nothing in the price point does what it does.

I get that you feel keeping silent doesn't effect change but neither does complaining on a forum about a minor feature you don't like. It stops being productive after a while. Its like cleaning the whole house spotless and then someone complaining there is a finger print on the coffee table.

Your options seem to be buy the GH4 and then buy an external monitor or EVF which has audio levels. You will still come in less then the nearest competitor OR buy the YAGH which has audio levels on it OR wait and see what else comes down the pipe in 6-12 months.

I'm not bashing you but after all these pages your point has been made. Its a valid point but a minor fly in the ointment. There are things I wish each manufacturer would change or add on their camera but I don't believe I have the power to change and especially since the many threads about the GH3 info disappearing fell on def ears at Panasonic so will this one unless its a kind of cathartic therapy to post about this feature.

Panasonic has done their research and I would guess they have found the display issue to not be an issue for 90% of the user base so they won't spend a dime on re-working that feature. Especially when they have already said they can't. Even if its a bogus reason they can't turn around and say yes we can now or they look like liars just like Canon did with their HDMI on the 5D3. Unlike the Canon situation there is no product forcing them to go back on their statement about display info.

I just take my left hand and slide the back wheel. It can be inconvenient at times but its not something I need to do frequently. To me its no different than adjusting audio levels on the EX1 or C300 while shooting. Now there is a camera that cost $14000 and they put the audio pots at the furthest front, top right side of the camera. That is a pain in the ass when shoulder mounted and that is a PRO camera. Just some perspective.

The thread started out right with a lament of an annoyance still being present in a new model. That is a legit "it's too bad" sort of thing Its when it was being declared a 'deal breaker' and 'People are crying about it' and ranting about further down the thread that it started to loose the plot in my opinion. Hyperbole helps no one.

Kum-by-ya m'lord, Kum-by-ya...oh lord...Kum-by-ya..."come on everybody join in" ...Kum......... :)

Joining in Lmao! Nice touch T

But seriously vtwiz, all due respect. I just don't think it's as bad as what you think. Do you use the GH3? Because like I said a couple pages ago, I did not want to buy one because of this complaint. To this day it does not bother me at all, in fact I am very comfortable with it.

Malibu, you are nothing but a schoolyard bully. My comment in relation to the rec light was in reply to you saying that a rec light is all you need. I stated that when using an EVF, sometimes the rec light is hard to see in the scene as it is very small on the 1080p HDMI scene. I did not complain that they should make it bigger. More words being put in my mouth by you.

if you read a post I made a few pages back, I state that it isn't a deal breaker but people continued to say how ridiculous I was being for complaining, thus me giving responses as to why I thought it was a silly feature.

I agree this thread is way too long for what is being discussed. It is fuelled though, by many complaining that people shouldn't be complaining. It takes two to argue and while I have raised many points, they have been in response to people belittling me and others for our views. You have all contributed to this so don't now wash your hands of it and lay the blame elsewhere. Should I be sorry for commenting in a thread that is all about people's dissatisfaction on a feature. Forums are for discussion, if you don't like the discussion or think its ridiculous, stop commenting on it and it will naturally die out.

I don't need to say anymore although considering Malibu's many torments attempting at getting a reaction from me I know you want to hear more.

Pathetic.

*phew* Read through this entire thread. What a thrilling read!

I do agree with the points vtwiz is making about the non-optional screen info stay, the conflicting Mbps bitrate qualities etc. Most arguments used against vtwiz are full of ad ignorantum, false dichotomy, straw man fallacy, and bandwagon fallacy.

But actually vtwiz did go all ad hominem first...

Dude, you can't speak to another person like:
"you look like a fool with your idiotic statements."
"you stupidly suggested"
"Are you serious?"
"Stop being a fool."
"your seemingly basic math is wrong."
"Obviously you think that"

I mean, maybe they'd forgive you if you was Gandalf and everyone else was a Hobbit, but we're all not.

So, we are all going to start getting hyper sensitive and okay the "he started it" child game. It could have ended a few posts back but alas it has continued. Let's continue the quoting shall we.

It all started with this condescending comment.

So why don't you fly to Japan and show those bozo engineers what's what. And give us a full report when you get back.

And this

You need to settle down when others don't agree, we're talking about a display - don't blow a blood vessel with idiotic rants and conspiracies - you're a tough guy when anonymous - say this in a real name forum

And my basic math comment came from replying to this comment:

No, but you don't seem to be acknowledging that encoding/processing/saving does have to take data size into account.
What part of that (basic math) equation is NOT making sense to you?

Isn't Thorns use of the phrase "what part of this (basic) math is NOT making sense to you" trying to make ME look stupid?

Bit more here:
Well, it's like you say: to each his/her own. To you, color reproduction fidelity is not important - bully for you.

And then someone blows his top:

Well you never do say anything in real name forums. Never post your work either so zero respect for your opinions. There is a display Gonad with ears you just need to be mollycoddled and reassured that what you saw 10seconds ago is still there. Spruiker and failed cameraman art thou and a painful whiner to boot. Now take you ball and go back to mum. WE are all sick of your abuse an arrogance.

You got nothing and should be treated with the same disrespect you dish out - calling people idiots and fools you Gonad with ears.

- you're a nutter mate. slink off somewhere

When I don't react to Malibu's torments he replies with this completely unprovoked obviously trying to continue the argument:
You could always call maran an idiot or fool for bringing it up VT - why stop here. Show us your form son

And again when I have Malibu no attention he added this again like a schoolyard bully trying to get a ride out of someone.

It doesn't change when they whine ad finitum like Vt does either. He even complained the rec light was too small many forums back- ahh les whats it like to know a little about a lot.

Now people are saying if it's such a deal breaker for me that I should just not buy the camera and stop complaining. Funnily, if you go back and read the thread properly, Malibu made the comment about it being a deal breaker and not me. I merely said the whole disappearing info thing was a terrible feature and made no sense.

Amazing thread. I thought it was closed but people keep wanting to resurrect it!

Well his reasoning is false, because as established and re-iterated in the replies, we voice out and demand changes or even do them ourselves (ie: GH2 hackers, petitionists, developers etc).

Unless you mean it started, as in, for you to talk down at them... then okay man!

Clearly it escalated since and malibudutchie got super more personal at the end. Where's the apologies and make-up sex already? This drama and tension needs releasing :bath:

Putting aside all the yelling and angst ... on a spectrum of "Really annoying" through "I'm OK with it" to "Doesn't bother me at all", I'm definitely at #1. I really like the audio meters on my GH2.

Just sayin ...

You should set up your shot before then if something changes you will have to stop recording to adjust right? Listening on the headphones, seeing that the camera is recording and how much time on the card is left should get you by.

This is so utterly pointless. But as I'm still waiting for pics to transfer while having my coffee, I've a free moment.

VT, the unpleasantness between you and I did not start with me making this comment:

What part of that (basic math) equation is NOT making sense to you?

My above comment was preceded by yours below, in response to my mb/sec theoretical limit example:

you look like a fool with your idiotic statements.

Speak to me like that, and yes - I'll start wording answers as if I'm speaking to an annoying, stubborn 7th grader. I could not understand your lack of logic in the bitrate/processor discussion, and when I choose to use a metaphorical comparison, you stopped arguing tech realities and went ad hominem.

I gather from some of your other posts that you've been doing this professionally for awhile, and as a result probably feel as if your opinion has some weight behind it. That's understandable, but I'll point out that many others here (including myself) also have a lot of years behind us. Discussions can and should be lively - otherwise, it reads like a white paper - but when you choose to bite people... dude - don't complain when they bite back. The world of discussion forums doesn't need another dpreview Basalite.

I've said all I believe I need to on this. If there has been a misunderstanding between us - that I was trolling for a fight, then I hope this clears up the matter. And if so, I look forward to more productive and enjoyable thread exchanges with you in the future.
