shutter speeds

im shooting skateboarding outside and im not sure if im using the best possible shutter speed. Do you guys have any helpful advice? please

Well, the standard shutter speed is 1/48(NTSC), which is what I would recommend unless you are going for that strobing look which you can achieve by selecting shutter 1/120 and faster.
But 1/48 will give you the most "film like" motion for 24p.

Ya, it'll look sweet. I shot a clip once at 24pA, at 1/500. It looked awesome!

Do you want to shoot 30p or 24p?

if you're shooting in 60I, i find that 1/120th of a second works very nicely for skateboarding and other fields with lots of fast motion. it really doesn't cause any strobing and it cuts down on the motion blur significantly.

oh, that's a whole different story. getting skateboarding to look just right with 24p can be a challenge due to the fact that progressive generally looks the best when the shutter is at a 180 degree angle (1/48th), but this will cause lots of motion blur with skateboarding. i would try 1/60th, or maybe a little higher than that. don't go too high though.

on the same subject for fast moving sports is it better to have the fastest possible shutter speed light permiting ?

does it help with slo mo's?

i.e i can shoot 1/16000, what would be the disadvantages/advantages assuming i have plenty of light?

Faster shutter speeds will equal less motion blurr but more strobey pictures. for slow mo, you should shoot 60i with 1/120 shutter and conform to 24p in post (just means streching it to 40% the orrigional speed).

im shooting 50i or 25p PAL on a canon a1

what would give me the best look for fast moving sports and slo mo's on that ?

so shoot 50i and slow to 50 percent with a shutter speed closest to 1/120.

ok thanks

is the 60i and 1/120 related with it being double

so would 50i work better @ 1/100 ?

sorry for being anal but im heading on a trip next week for 2 weeks filming and want to make sure im using the best possible settings, so as not to return home and wish i had it set up differently when its too late

Yes.

It will work just as well at 1/120. Question is can you tell the difference?. Probably not but you would have to see for yourself. If you want to emulate film-type motion characteristics, choose a shutter speed 2x your frame rate.

you might want to go out and practice now, so that you don't

thanks :cheesy:

its grey and miserable here but im heading to the sun in egypt and the lighting will be excellent so will be hard to get a true look before i go

im not really after a film look to be honest, its kite surfing im filming so just want sharp crisp footage

why does my camera have a 1/16000 shutter speed - what situation would you use a speed that high if your recommending 1/120

i shot some bmx at a outdoor park today and it was snowing and i had it at 1/1000 24p and it looked really cool. i think its cause of the snow.
