GH4 Secret Appearance of the GH4 at SXSW Tomorrow

My theory is that the GH4 was probably the real goal all along, and the GH3 was a stopgap/intermediary product along the way. So it wouldn't surprise me if those 18 pins will do more than power, shutter, two dials, three buttons on top... it doesn't seem like a simple battery grip would really need 18 pins' worth of connectivity. Hopefully I'm wrong though! It would be nice to see alternatives to the YYAARRGGHHH MATEY box.

Not sure it would make sense to send some of the video out the HDMI and some out of the pins. More likely that all the outputs are driven via the HDMI output and the inputs driven through the four pins. Again, i could be wrong.

Not that it means anything but the battery grip for my 5D MK II & III has 18 pins. So a still camera use does have a lot of pins.

Can't wait for the Hot Rod Cameras test. Since it's running the YAGH > KiProdQuad we should finally get to see the first examples of optimal quality the GH4 has, or something close to it.

Or at least a web-compressed version of it.

The first reason is you want to record 10-bit immediately, and as of the lack of HDMI 4K recorders it's the only way at the moment.

I am not trying to sound coy, but I can't say the second reason right now. As it will work with another yet to be announced product. You can always buy a YAGH later, if the need arises- I think it the unannounced product makes for compelling functionality.

Do you think we can expect to see this product revealed prior to when pre-orders start shipping? It's really tough to make a decision without the full picture... Thanks for taking the time to answer all of our questions here!

Thanks for all the info, Illya. Another question... do you know if the focus peaking setting disappears after 30 seconds like the rest of the on-screen info?

Nobody knows for sure at this point, but there's a good chance it's real. One thing you should know is that several months back Panasonic said the GH4 was being designed as a high end camera, and they were going after that market. You can clearly see that in some of the features, like the syncho shutter. That's something that previously had only come from the professional video division. So, yeah, maybe, just maybe it's real.

I think the answer is no.

From B&H

Supports UHS-I Class III Speed SD Cards The DMC-GH4 uses a variety of advanced recording media, including SDXC, SDHC, and SD Memory Cards. The fastest of these cards is the UHS-I Class III, which is recommended when using high bit rate video recording modes over 100 Mbps.

Is it "real" 10-bit 422 or the all more prevalent 8-bit padded to 10-bits?

All SDI output is 10 bits. All cameras that output "8-bit" SDI are actually outputting 8-bit that's been padded to 10-bit, by adding two "0" bits at the end.

For them to point out that it's 10-bit, is almost unquestionably meaning that it is outputting 10 bits of data.

The only question at this point would potentially be whether those final 2 bits are true sampled image data, or perhaps the "uprezzed" technology found in the AF100A. Nobody (other than the engineers) know that answer, but a good clue would be in that Panasonic openly told us that the AF100A output was being upconverted, whereas they're not making any such statement here, so ... my guess is, when using the YAGH, you're getting genuine 10-bit output.

Sorry I was referring to HDMI not SDI.

The consensus thus far is that all video is likely being fed through the Micro HDMI port on the GH4. There is no confirmation on this but it would seem logical that if the GH4 ouputs 10bit 4K then the YAGH, which connects to the Micro HDMI port, is getting it's signal from that connection. The YAGH's primary function seems to be that it is currently, the only known device that can convert the GH4, 4K 10 Bit HDMI signal to an SDI output(s). This makes sense as all of the 4k recorders currently available can only record 4K from an SDI connection.

Someone on one of these GH4 threads has stated that he had knowledge that Atomos is likely releasing a new recorder at NAB that can record the 4K signal from the GH4's Micro HDMI port. I guess we will find out in a few weeks if that is true.

If Atmos does bring a recorder like that to the market I would be a very happy camper. I might even sell my bmpcc.

So if it's 4k 10-bit 422 over HDMI it might be okay for recording, but I wonder what the delay might be like for "monitoring". Maybe unusable.

I was part of a test using four Sony F55's for 4k live feed via SDI to HDMI convertor box by BMD then over to massive LCD screens for "live" feed but the delay was unbearable. (HDMI being the weak link).

I'm dreaming but, would be great if Atomos can introduce some sort of Ninja Blade 4k with 2 XLR inputs, something like the SoundDevices Pix series.

The HDMI 1.4 Specification is supposed to support 4K. When you say HDMI was the weak link do you mean that the entire protocol was the weak link? I imagine a 4 camera setup would have a lot of parts to the equation that could fail. Interesting thought nontheless. I suppose you could just use the on camera monitoring if the lag was unbearable and perhaps the supposed Atomos solution is just a recorder and not a monitor. We shall soon see...

The protocol definitely doesn't seem to be the weak link at all, it has a maximum throughput of 8.16 Gbit/s, and the HDMI v2.0 is even higher... mainly I just meant the lag, but maybe there is no major lag. I was mainly speculating without any real facts. :P
