GH4 Secret Appearance of the GH4 at SXSW Tomorrow

Last time I used a battery belt it was powering a Colortran light, and I was shooting with a Sony camera and a 3/4 inch deck.

Good times....

So, a GH4, YAGH, a cage w/audio gear, an external recorder, and a battery belt is the field solution? If that's what I was looking for I'd go with the BMCC. But it's not, which is why I've paid little attention to the YAGH. A big part of the GH4's appeal is its low profile, and recording to the card should still yield a best-in-class image at this price.

LOL! I for one didn't order the YAGH since I just dont have a clear picture on how I would use it. Rather wait and see. Pre orders for the combo also had a later delivery. Panasonic really needs to show the YAGH in a real world situation because it's not clear what they were thinking.

Yes they should send me one so I can put it through its paces. :)

I don't miss BVU (U-Matic) one little bit! ;-)

I think Panasonic's thinking on the YAGH is that if you are using it, you are most likely also using an external recorder as well via the SDI. This being the case, many people use small rigs when using external recorders so a battery solution like Eric posted is a good way of powering everything.

It would be nice if you could use the audio features (XLR's and level adjuster pots) without any external power as there are lots of people out there that would want to record internally but use the XLR inputs of the YAGH for audio and still go handheld without a rig. For this, an external solution like a Beachtek still seems like the best option.

The interesting things is that is appears as if you don't actually need the YAGH unless you want to externally record 4k. Even if you do want to externally record 4k, rumor has it that Atomos is coming with a recorder that can record 4k from an HDMI output. If that rumor turns out to be true then that really negates the use of the YAGH at all. About the only other reason to even consider the YAGH is if you happen to be in a situation that requires the use of time code....which I am going to say a very small percentage of GH4 users.

Yes, the HDMI output of the GH4 is 4K 10bit 422 so you could just use a soon to be released HDMI recorder. If Atomos or similar are listening, include some XLR inputs and adjustable level control with good preamps. This would completely (other than TC) as you say, negate the need for the YAGH. A cage with HDMI lock would be imperative though.

You know what would be messed up? Panasonic reads all of these posts that states what you just said and say to themselves "Don't those fools know this camera has not been released yet? Ok...it's likle that huh...Let's just disable the 4:2:2 out of the HDMI...make it a shabby 4:2:0 ....and while we're at it...let the HDMI out ONLY be 1920 x 1080. Yeah...let's see them talk smack now. <<evil laugh>> BBUUUHHHWWWAAAAAA <</evil laugh>>"

...I mean....it's possible...maybe ...sorta... :)

Don't be ridiculous, a manufacturer would never deliberately cripple a camera like that.

Wow... I guess you missed the point of the joke. Don't worry it won't happen. But, if by chance that major company takes to heart anything I said here then they would also take into consideration all those posts about working around using the YAHG (or brick)....which was the point of my joke in the first place. :)

Actually, it's now confirmed that you can get 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 directly out of the Micro HDMI port on the camera:
