FEATURE: SEARCHING FOR ANGELS (formerly JANE DOE)

Thanks. We built a set for two reasons:

1. The hospital sets in our area were simply just too expensive. A lot of them asked $5k+/10hr day + additional expenses and while they were great locations, were just out of our budget.
2. We had MUCH more flexibility regarding lighting design (ie. - lighting from above).

Reason #2 was definitely the biggest motivating factor. Who doesn't like flexibility? It really made us feel more comfortable that we were able to go in, build, dress and light the set days before the actual shoot date.

Thanks Martin. Definitely wasn't easy, but our set builder was fantastic and really hardworking. Work ethic was at an all time high with our crew on Jane Doe - I've never seen a crew work so hard!

Getting some distribution interest emails rolling in and we're not even done post!

Thanks Martin! New posters here (for both our original title and foreign market title):

Hell yea man, keep it up, Vivica all over the box now, VERY smart...you'll sign a distro deal the day after you finish post...this is motivating! Keep it up man!

Thanks! We definitely hope so! I'll be updating the thread soon with news of picture lock, so stay tuned!

Trailer looks pretty awesome! Love the cc! You have quite a few white flashes, which look sweet, but some sound effects would jazz them up even more I think. Anyway, great job!

Thanks Marlon! We're actually under a super time crunch with trying to hit the TIFF deadline, but we needed a trailer out - hm, I hadn't thought about the sound effects with the white flashes.

It looks excellent as is, but I was just nitpicking any little thing to make it even better. The super-big Hollywood trailers always hit you hard with sound and that impact can make a difference. Think of it like seeing somebody hit with a punch in a movie. If there's no sound, you only get half the impact. If there is sound, you see it and hear it = you feel it. I like the flashes and they look really good, but a swooshing sound or something to that effect would have made me feel it more.

Did you submit the film to TIFF or just the trailer?

Nothing yet - we think we're going to hit picture lock within the next couple days. We don't want to just submit a trailer, even though the new one has V. Fox. We want to submit a cut with a first audio pass done. As soon as we get a rough done, we're going to do a "filmmaker" screening to get a feel for flow and tighten things a bit. Then its off to our sound guy in Montreal to work his magic and make it sound great...deadline's May 27th, so its DEFINITELY going to be tight.

Very nice new trailer, professionally edited, and excellent use of Viivca A. Fox moments to help sell it. I don't see how a distributer who buys this genre of film wouldn't be interested. Hope it does well for you when complete! (distro deal + festivals)

May I ask what ballpark the budget was in? Sorry if you posted it already in another thread/post. Or if you don't want to say, then at least how much (or just "how") you got Vivica A. Fox?

Inspiring.

Thanks GND! At this point, we're not releasing any budget information as we're unsure of how it might affect distribution. We haven't been down this road before, so we're taking any and all precautions. After distro is secured, we'll likely release some more information.

Glad to see a fellow Torontonian pipe in,

Kegan

Hey Keegan,

Caught the trailer. Thanks for hitting me with the link. I agree with Marlon on what he's saying, and would probably be more cautious of sound than anything when releasing a trailer. Not going to beat that living horse to death, but yeah.

Wondering, so you guys wrote in some scenes for Vivica to tie into the story? In the first trailer it seems more like Jane Doe's (Veronika is her real name?) spiral into a grimey rabbit hole.

Here, it seems like a completely different story, tied in with Vivica and possibly her daughter? Something redeeming? Vivica was an additional actress after the fact, yes?

How did that process go over?

I understand in regards to the budget info, and yes, being a fellow torontonian, I hope your film does well and helps get attention to the mega indie film scene here.

I've sent the link to a couple friends of mine who are actors/directors here in toronto too, hope it inspires them to get out there and try harder, ha.

Look forward to the film when it`s done.

Edit: also noticed you embedded the vimeo link and it was HD. Whenever I embed a vimeo link it`s only SD even though it`s HD on vimeo`s site. How`d you get that to work?

Kholi: Thanks for your thoughts. Actually, Vivica's part was written in right from the beginning. We always intended to use her and her character reflected that right from the start. We believe that writing characters in after the fact for a name, shows in the final product. Vivica's role is crucial to the film's progression - we just wanted to shoot as much of the film as we could before we brought Vivica in - figured our money would stretch further that way...we just really wanted to shoot. In retrospect, that was a bad idea and names will ALWAYS be filmed first.

The approach to this trailer is different than that of the first. We tried to tell the story, but with the structure and missing the Vivica scenes that fell flat on its face. Feedback was generally that it looked awesome, but nobody really understood what was happening. So, for this one we scrapped the whole idea of telling the story, due to a very complex timeline and just chose a bunch of cool, abstract shots like the Seven Pounds trailer. It appears that some people are still trying to figure out the story and to be honest, I don't mind that. The way I see it, it'll encourage people to see the film once its released. Trailer editing is indeed an art and the release/marketing of a feature is a lot more difficult than we originally thought. We're truly learning a lot about the process as we move forward.

GND: I appreciate forwarding it off to your friends. What exactly do you do? For some reason, I feel like we almost worked on a 24 TFC project once or twice. Let's hope for a TIFF premiere and then you can come out! Regarding the Vimeo link, I have a "Plus" account and I believe HD embedding is a "Plus" feature only. Under the "Embedding" tab, there's a checkbox that says "Default this video to HD quality when embedded".

Thanks guys!
