Hey everyone, I'm a producer on Jane Doe and have taken over the thread for mastermind. I'll try to develop a production log based on what I can remember - feel free to ask specific questions and if I don't know the answer, I'll find out for you.

This has all been shot on 7Ds - usually with one camera, but we had a B camera out for some of the shoot days as well. We do have a teaser trailer that we cut back in February floating around online (I think its in this thread somewhere), but will likely be re-cutting a trailer in the following months...still to be seen however.

We are about 85% through principal photography and are excited to be this close to completion!

If you guys are into it I'd definitely love to make this a production blog of sorts. I know as a filmmaker I loved reading everyone elses production blogs since i joined this site in 2001 i think or whatever it was. so lemme know if you want me to do so aswell and I'd be honoured.

"Jane Doe" a Canon 7D feature going into production

"Jane Doe" a Canon 7D feature going into production

Can you describe the gear breakdown a little further. Which fast primes? How are you handling timecode? Planning a traditional vid assist or just HDMI on camera?

In terms of lenses i have a canon 85mm 1.8, canon 50mm 1.4 and a sigma 20mm 1.8

For camera i ahve the Redrock DSLR cinema bundle, mattbox with sideflags, follow focus with gears and whip extension, shoulder mount etc..I also picked up the Zacuto Z-finder.

Also picked up a bunch of Shneider Classic Softs 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2 (i found the 1/8 almost pointless..but i may be mistaken) i have camera tests this week so if i feel my highlights are too diffused with the 1/4 on the wide end i'll then pick up a 1/8. Also grabbed an ND6 and a pola.

I have a "day to day" lighting kit with consists of a couple 2bank flourescent fixtures with kino bulbs in them and a 1k, 650, 300 kit.

Cant think of anything else really worth mentionning here, grip stuff, A/C, etc etc...

I'll be renting every now and then things like an 1.2HMI, doorway dolly and track, jib arm etc.. (basically stuff i cant afford) however that in itself will be sparse.

Oh yeah forgot the monitor, i'm using the HDMI connection with an IKAN 8" hd monitor. not the greatest i know but it is what it is...lol.

In regards to timecode i'm not too sure what you mean there. Can you clarifY? Basicallly i'm shooting a feature so I'm basically gonna shoot, sync and edit. Ofcourse i'll keep my masters of an online cus my system probably wont be able to handle the codec so i'll be editing proxies then relink the original footage for CC and export. I THINK..lol. I'm really new to the 7D (never used the 5d either) just basically have been shooting Red, 35mm and super16mm even HD but no on a still camera yet so just working out all the bugs for myself.

Of course, I'd love to see a production blog...especially since you're shooting with an SLR.

Nice site and best of luck!

Hey guys, finally shooting my first feature. Grabbed a 7D, a ton of accesories from Redrock and a nice set of fast primes. Principal photography start in January 2010 and I'm thus far aiming for a 24 day shoot. In very sure that i'll be coming here more and more asking questions regarding the 7D as I go along.

heres our poster and you can also check out our website: www.janedoemovie.com theres also a synopsis and more info about the film there. Its a pretty ambitious project but hopefully we'll get through it.

Very finally if you're motivated enough to do so definitely join our facebook fan page. I'll be giving production updates there regularly plus I'm "formerly" a music video director so my facebook is all recording artists. would be great to have a few filmmakers like myself on there: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jane-Doe-The-Movie/159067090138?ref=ts

AWESOME!!! I know there's a few other features which just started filming so any more we can add to the mix is a great boost for the camera!

Don't forget to check out http://www.cinema5d.com/index.php and http://philipbloom.co.uk/blog/ for all the best 7D info. If you ever get stuck on anything, I recommend looking at Cinema5D first since they've been dealing with the 5D & 7D the longest. Good luck with your shoot, and make sure you keep us updated on the progress!

Excited about this. I agree that timecode is not that big a deal for a feature that is sync-sound on a non-timecode audio device anyway, as long as you keep your rushes organized, you'll be fine.

Definitely be sure to post about this on Cinema7D! The folks there (me!) will be excited about this. Poster looks SLICK.

Sounds like you're editing on a PC? If so, forget about messing around with proxies. Save yourself a headache, and spend a hundred bucks on NeoScene. it works, it really does. Beautiful 4:2:2 codec that transcodes fast, and edits in real time. I did some betatesting for the Cineform guys when the 7D came out, and can confidently tell you that they now have a version of NeoScene that works flawlessly with the 7D. It's worth it.

Maybe because he mentioned that up until now he’s been primarily shooting Red, 35mm, Super 16 and even HD on all of his projects. He said principal photography for this current film doesn’t start until January and he just picked up a 7D expecting a 24 day shoot. I’d guess that photo is from another set. But….what do I know.

Hey guys...thanks for all the responses and YES i will definitely check out Neoscene as soon as i'm done typing this. Never heard of it so if it saves me the time of doing proxies to edit that would be amazing. Actually never heard of the cinema7d forum so thats a great find!!! Thanks.

Why, in the production photos, is there a RED One camera being shown filming this? What a joke.

Yeah thats actaully a pic from one of my music videos shoots. The web designer just picked it up from my facebook page and threw it in there for now. Eventually (once we start shooting) that gallery is going to be divided in two..one section for production stills and the other for screen caps. The pics of the girl in there are not from the film either..they're just promo shots. She is the lead girl however.

Hi,

Good start. What are using for audio?

Thanks,

Ken

For audio quite frankly i'm not too sure at this point because i'm juggling between a couple sound recordists. both with their own gear. I'm pretty sure it will be on a digital recorder, but quite frankly i dont know model name etc...cus i dont know a damn thing about audio other than its gotta sound good...lol. Which is why I'm hiring someone who does :)

Awesome poster! Everything looks great. I'm a 7D owner out of Toronto too and will be following your thread closely. Best of luck to you. If you need anything, feel free to shoot me a PM and I'd be more than happy to help where I can!

Kegan

hey there...great to find another toronto 7d owner on here. do you have anything in terms of a "rig?" reason i ask is i'll be looking for a B camera for a couple of the shooting days because we dont have much time at the locations and i want to be able to maximize my coverage. I dont really care about the "rig" quite frankly however filtration is necessary so you would need a mattebox that can hold my 4X4 filters. if so let me know.

Right now my "rig" consists of:

- 7D w/ 8GB Extreme IVs (x3)
- Zacuto Rapid Fire
- Manfrotto 701HDV w/ sticks
- 50mm 1.8f
- 17-50mm 2.8f
- 28-135mm 3.5-5.6f IS

I will keep you posted if I get a mattebox. Looking forward to the teaser on Friday.

Kegan

We're actually shooting it on friday..not coming out on friday. I love the Speilberg quote in your sig by the way :)

question about shooting slomo. I have a few slow motion sequences in the film (not many) I just wanted to throw it out there before i commited to shooting them at 720p 60fps then blowing them up to fit the 1080p that the rest of the film will be shot on. What are your opinions on this. Anything i could/should be doing? I'm pretty sure my film wont make theatrical distro however i still hope to be able to maintain as much as an image i can for festival projectin. At the same time "who knows??" I'm pretty sure that for DVD and TV it will look fine but still could use some advise.

thanks.

Oh wow...great! I just checked your Facebook group and it says that its the teaser SHOOT...makes sense - have a good shoot.

Hm good question about the slo mo, unfortunately I can't help there. Hopefully somebody chimes in shortly.

Kegan

hey mastermind

I'm a steadicam operator in toronto, I'd be willing to help you out for a few days. I've been shooting with humber students a bunch lately on 16mm and red and once with a 5d and I'm also thinking of getting a 7d so I wouldn't mind getting some hands on with this camera. Not sure if steadicam is the look you want but let me know if your interested,
my email: kevin.steadicam(at)gmail.com replace the at with @ ;)

You can check out my demo reel here: http://vimeo.com/4673493
(this is old though have much better shots now, in the process of making a new reel)

Cheers!

hey there. im actually looking for a steadicam op as we speak. I have about 2-3 steadicam days on the shoot.

I'll email you.

Well we're a week away from the shoot!!! Very very exciting and scary at the same time. This is my first feature so I guess thats why. I have a good feeling however once on set i'll just be so focused on my shot list that all that nervousness will go right out the window.

Tech question: in doing my camera tests I have been playing with the "color tone" in the picture style to somewhat get a little closer to my intended color tone prior to CC. I've just been very slightly adjusting. Any issues with changiing this setting prior to me commiting to it. i figured it would be great to just do that pre-compression because it would helpmy image hold up by not having to push as much in CC. Thoughts and/or warnings?
