Scarlet Update

Luis, I think the Scarlet will indeed be the revolution now. I have to thank Nikon and Canon for pushing the Red Guys to the limit. Exciting times!

Red could not conquer the market forever with their "RAW" camera/camcorder concept. Nikon, Canon and Ikonoskop are now becoming emerging "REAL" competitors (unlike the big three "legacy" Canon, Panasonic, Sony). I was set on the Scarlet, until the interchangeable, uncompressed, CCD DII camera was introduced at IBC. Nikon should start their own camcorder division that produces out a sub 10k "mini red one".

I really can't see anyone waiting for other cameras once there is a $3,000, 16mm raw gorgeous-image camera out there. DII seems to be an amazing camera if it weren't for the MUCH larger files they expect to get. Red offers more than just their sensors, they also have crazy 10:1 compression and a few other things. Also, you are so close to the price tag for a One when you are paying for a DII that I really don't see a lot of people waiting for one. That way you get your interchangeable lenses and a pile more resolution. Then again I haven't been following the DII as much as others so I might be missing something.

Just to play devils advocate, the Ikonoskop DII costs roughly $12,000 and uses 16mm lenses. The RED ONE costs roughly $17,000. Both of these prices are body only. However, the DII uses 16mm lenses which in certain instances are cheaper than their 35mm counterparts.

On the other hand the ONE can shoot up to 4K and the DII can only shoot up to 1K. So you win you lose!

FYI: We don't know ANYTHING... but Luis C. is trying to compile the statements into this thread: http://www.scarletuser.com/showthread.php?t=1054

:D

I knew it would happen. I don't think anyone, including the RED team, expected such advance's from other manufacturers so quickly. Suddenly their "future" camera isn't quite so "futuristic" and ahead of the game. Nikon and Canon both have 35mm sensors with interchangeable lenses that came outta nowhere, and will only continue to develop the "movie mode" side of things. The Ikonoskop cam dropped from pretty much nowhere also, and has a LOT of people very excited. All that made scarlet definitely seem less like the cam everyone has been waiting for.

I'm not saying anything bad about scarlet, just that it needed a change to keep up with the times. Especially if it's release date is still months and months away. Who knows what else will come out in that time.

In all honesty, I'll bet Mr. Jannard is a little peaved that all this happened when so much has already been sunk into Scarlet. Let's just say, for example (and this is JUST for example), that one of Scarlets updates will be interchangeable lenses. Imagine how much time and money went into the fixed 2.8 that they were planning on, and now it's all out window.

All I can hope for is interchangeable lenses, and a larger sensor (can we say 35mm?). Yeah, I know... won't happen... but that doesn't keep me from hoping.:happy:

Oh my... This is going to be one heck of a ride. I can only assume that if they are completely reinventing a camera, that the release date is going to have to be pushed back. I am also thinking they are going to make the dsmc and scarlet the same camera...who knows.

I am guessing:

_ a bigger sensor (but not S35)
_ 3K
_ $3,000.- (or less than $5,000.-)
_ fixed lens
_ some sweet still options

And that it will obliterate DII in 99% of all important areas of concern.

Ummm... that's pretty much the old version of scarlet... just a tad bigger sensor.? I think there will be at least one substantial change, not just an upgraded sensor. The idea of the their DSLR killer and scarlet merging is intriguing.

Either way, my dream camera isn't far off, and I'm excited. I don't care who puts it out there (except I'm really not a canon fan), but whomever does it right first gets my money. I sincerely hope that's RED, but I can't wait around for another year or two on hype alone. I'm in the market now.

but I don't have 10k to spend

the bigger sensor could do away with the only thing people seem to hate about Scarlet and that is that they won't be able to get 35mm DOF... forget the lens mount, what people want is image control, and with a big sensor and a lens as nice as Jim has been boasting we will be getting then we'd be getting almost everything.... a bigger sensor such as 35mm would be an immense upgrade and an easy way to obliterate DII and add more resolution for still photography

it may not be the most likely but it is what I want :)

Oh, believe me, the bigger sensor is what I want too... but I also want interchangeable lenses. Fisheye, zoom, classic 50mm? C'mon, that is image control.

I honestly believe that one without the other is a compromise. People want both, and it's just a matter of time until one of the manufacturers hits the nail on the head.

Not that I take much seriousness to the majority of posters on the scarlet forum, but it's sometimes amusing to watch:

Arggg! touché!

OK... sub 5k, small (handheld) form factor. Too much to ask for? maybe right now, but I can almost see the horizon line, and it's awful pretty.

i agree^. If red wont do it, someone will. These other co.'s are gonna need some kind of way around the image red has already created.

I have no idea what the next iteration of Scarlet will be, but I'm hoping it's already in the later stages of development and will be ready by next summer.

I'm actually relieved that its being revamped already...I was probably 1 of only a few people who weren't too excited about RED, especially its body design and fixed lens.

Here's hoping for something awesome.

They said that the delivery date didn't change and that. Also they are planing to make enough this time.

They might be changing the ergonomics, and that would explain the need for a new render.

:)

They're pretty smart. So I'm thinking their MDSLR will cost closer to what Scarlet costs now (3000us$) and they'll bump Scarlets' price to around 5000$. The digital cinema market is starting to look more and more like the real estate market.
