GH4 Rumored Log profile

Yes, why else would it exist?

I have some insider information though that if Panasonic introduces any new Log profiles, they will be for the flagship new Varicams, not the low end GH4, although Log could trickle down to the GH4 eventually. There will be at least two major video-centric announcements for the GH4 this year, my source could not disclose what those will be exactly, other than they said the video people are going to love them and they are not the rumored Log profile.

I'm glad they are pushing their current gear rather than creating a new box that everyone must buy. I'm convinced the GH4 can shoot quality motion pictures as it is now. Even more is even better! Did that make sense? :D

Better colour science off course. Better highlights rollof. Have you seen what happens to skin tones when they are highly exposed?

DR is maxed, you can't squezee any more out of it. 12.8 (or something like that) stops is the sensors DR, THATs it. No gamma will improve that. You could improve DR with high bits raw. But even then you wouldn't be " improving" DR, you would just be able to use the avaliable DR more... And even that wouldn't be much as there is just to much noise 11.5 stops is max at the moment. Raw would maybe let you use 12/12.5 stops...

I wonder what theses two new video improvements could be if it's not the log profile, could it be even more framerates

At this point, that's all I know. My source was under NDA and could not tell me what the new stuff is but it is encouraging to know that there are some new and or enhanced goodies in store for the GH4.

now my spidey sense is tingling! Dreaming of 200fps burst modes in 4k!

Dont expect more DR. Color could improve with a new profile or maybe change the color science of the camera. Canon did this with the Cinema EOS and boy did it improve the camera.

Higher frame rates? Nope. The GH4 can barely handle the 96 we already have. They could improve on it maybe.

I want record trigger via HDMI. Thats a big deal. With the Shogun pretty close to shipping adding it would be great! Hopefully it's doable.

Part of me thinks Panasonic doesn't want to add record trigger because it gives us yet another reason to not buy the YAGH however the YAGH doesn't claim to pass the protocol either.

Have my doubts Log would be useful without 10-bit recording. And 10-bit will be painful to capture without a record trigger.

Panasonic should also address the Timecode glitch, & the lack of metadata that allows automating the chore of stitching spanned files.

if the camera processes 10bit internal and outputs 10bit via hdmi what is stopping it from recording internal?

Well, here's a poor anology but - your television can accept any signal coming down the cable, and show it instantly. But it takes more electronics to store it (like a DVR) while it's doing this.

Recording the signal is different than passing it along the circuit to an output port. Recording a 10 4/2/2 stream takes far more bandwidth and memory than 8 4/2/0. The GH4 may not have a processor pipeline built to do this perfectly every time with every frame. Of course if it does, and they plan to activate that function with a firmware update, so much the better.

I would also love to see a cinema dng type option but highly doubt it. Erik, regarding the comment about high frame rates already stressing the camera, let's not forget how conservative the GH2 was before the hack. I was able to increase the bit rate to about six times the standard. So I think the engineers have a bit of headroom built in to deal with processor strain, heat etc. 120 fps is surely within reach I suspect because the cam can deal with 4k at 30p. Surely that is a comparable strain to 120fps at full HD? Many recorders scale this way as well. They can do 1080 HD at up to 30p or 720p at 60fps. So I cannot see why higher frame rates may not be included in a future update - at least I hope they do. A way to stream the high frame rate stuff out the hdmi port would also be cool.
What would be seriously cool is if they give Vitaliy and others the ability to dig deep into the code like the magic lantern guys and improve the camera after the fact.

You raise a really interesting point here. I can totally see it possible that Panasonic would hold a little back inside the firmware upon initial release. As more competition comes out (A7s), Panasonic can roll out some firmware updates to sweeten the pot, so to say. Rather than putting all their eggs in one basket, it can keep them very desirable after the "honeymoon" phase after initial relase.

A7s will be almost 100% more expensive than the GH4. So regarding the GH4 vs A7s there is really no need for Panasonic to do anything IMO.

But still, they're losing market sales for the A7S S-Log. Time will tell... (C'mon Panny, it's time to wake up!)

That is true regarding price but it seems like a fair amount of people are directly comparing them. In this case, I feel that the market has determined these two cams to be competitors. Personally, I love it; more innovation from both camps.
