Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

Barry, your say on this new DSLR? Preliminary, since there are many questions still in the air... What do you think we can expect from the competition, like Panasonic,Sony and even Red?

Heh....seeing the latest Canon DSLR makes me giggle. I think that many would have said that DSLRs will NEVER get to the next level because they are primarily for photos. ....well, so much for that theory. I know that there are MANY functionalities that a true video camera has that this cam doesn't, but the IQ looks to be the "next level" for sure. The low light is better, the codec is better, moire and aliasing is better, full frame for those who are into that....here it comes: DSLR 2.0...enjoy the ride! As for the Nov announcement, we'll see, but I do think this is a pretty big hint about what is coming.

Has any specific place and time been announced for Nov 3? I haven't seen anything official from Canon since the teaser. Or have I missed something?

2) Adobe gets on the wagon - fast. I'd love to see the codec in place, fully supported, on major NLEs before launch day.

Premiere probably already supports it. It's your basic h264 but only with i-frames. No reason why a proper NLE would not support it already as you can create those files now if you want to.

yeah, I agree with maarek, Premiere supports pro-res even though it doesnt have a specific preset for it, so chances are you're good. And if not I'm sure they will be on board, it shouldn't be a difficult update for them

On the 3rd, The event starts at 3pmPST......so I expect a press release for what ever is being announced will be released by 5 or 6pmPST....On the 4th (second day), Canon will be holding a 2nd, invite only event from 1-9pm.

Yea... DSLRs (and DSMC) are really the future. Whenever I have to use something like an EX3 for work I feel like I'm working some old tape-recording beta cam from the 80's. "Video cameras" just feel so old to me now.

BTW, I don't even think Canon has released the codec info beyond that there is going to be an Intra-frame mode that is 300mbps... they could still be planning on implementing a 4:2:2 mode. Maybe they're waiting on something (other companies' announcements) before they implement the final color space?

Traditional video cameras just don't sell in enough numbers to lower the technology price for the advancements they need to compete with the DSLR market right now. Red and DSLRs are most likely going to replace all video/motion options in the next 5 years. ...unless Panny and Sony do something radical... like s35 4k cameras for $5000. No more playing around though, this is real competition. 24mb/s point-and-shoot codecs in $4000+ bodies are not going to cut it anymore.

Could you please point to where you're getting this information. Thanks.

Yes, I was invited...we are Canon's top dealer in the Pro division. I have been waiting to hear from Canon if they are opening up the invites for Saturday the 5th....They did put invites out to the members of the ASC, SOC, and the DCS. If I hear anything, I'll post it.

Yep. I hear that. I think Panny had their shot with the AF100 to give it a more aggressive codec out of the box....so did Sony with the FS100/F3. I TOTALLY get it on both cams that you can record external, or go with Slog on the F3....but neither is built with an "out of the box" codec that is "groundbreaking". This one may NOT be either....we'll see, but they seem to be heading in the right direction. MAN ON MAN do I hope that it is 10bit. I won't be shocked if it isn't, but dang....if it is, it will be groundbreaking,....fingers crossed.

I'm not saying what it will be, just what it should be.

The body of the Canon XA-10 (even its removable XLR handle)

XA10_reverse_gallery.jpg XA10_angle1_non_gallery.jpg

but with S35 sensor and interchangeable lens (just imagine a nice 35mm Zeiss on the front of it)

global shutter

10-bit
422
SD or CF cards
1-60 fps

Not unreasonable, wouldn't you you say? And yet wouldn't such a camera utterly take the market?

Yes. This would take the market. IMHO

This is good news. If you ("Canon's top dealer") and ASC have been invited then we can almost safely assume it's a camera launch and not some other obscure screening of sorts.

I am asking myself if the codec all-I is not conditional of what the competion... RED will lauch on the 3rd. I think Chris hurd say that they refuse to tell what it was. That is the question has been asked but they did not say what it is. If red for example ( I don't know if Canon consider RED as competition) announce some Scarlet which they might feel as threatening they might even go to 444 (as some speculated a 360 mbit codec can do) to counter it. Jannard has wanted to play directly against Canon, with his November 3 lauch, so they might themselves play the game with him. See what he has in his card on the 3rd and move accordingly. A 444 cinestyle vista vision camera for about the same price than a scarlet will be a very powerful adversary.

Now this is all speculation, what I think should be done is a campaign ala 24 fps Canon 5d mark 2 lobby, to put pressure on them to at least get 10 bit and 422. As the camera is coming in 5 month and that some part of the specification are not set in stone we still have time to make our voice heard loud and clear. This will be what we will expect to see in the future Canon Dslr line up for the next 3 to 4 years, so better get it right from now. Again all this could be changed on the November 3 announcement.
