You're thinking of the DVX100B in 2004. The original DVX100 came out in October 2002. The XL2 was two full years later, and a full 7 years after the XL1 was introduced.
Timeline:
Oct 2002: DVX100
March 2003: JVC HD1
June 2004: Canon XL2
Sept 2004: Sony FX1
Feb 2005: Sony Z1
Canon got their first 24p camcorder out seven years after Panasonic did it. JVC had consumer HD a full 15 months before Canon introduced a progressive-scan DV tape camcorder.
Now, to be fair to Canon, they weren't extraordinarily late in getting to HDV. The XLH1 came out in September 2005, only a year after the FX1, but still two and a half years after the JVC HD1. That's the fastest they've ever responded to keeping up with what the other manufacturers were doing. As said before, it took 'em five years to respond to the HVX200...
And Jim, I'm not buying beer, my $20 goes to dvxuser's official charity, isara, and if I win any bets I'm asking that the winnings be sent to isara...
