Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

Is there going to be a live stream anywhere?

Sorry if it's already posted but DXU doesn't update me properly and always shows new posts as ones I read ages ago :(

It's a good point actually, daveswan.

Until now, they have not had an s35 video product to protect... but we might see them hold back on video improvements on the lower end DSLRs. They will probably stick with 4:2:0, 8bit and crippled HDMI

At which point Canon would lose me (and many, many more) as customers. I'm not going to support half-baked Canon cripple cams. Maybe Nikon would get a clue at that point and finally introduce a DSLR with good video features. Someone would step in to fill the vacuum, that's for sure.

Agreed. But would Scorcese show up for a $5,000 AF100/FS100 competitor or a 5D Mark III? Not bloody likely either. Which is why I say that this announcement will be about a whole lot more than a product introduction, if there even is a product introduction at all. :thumbsup:

Yes, I agree this is bigger than a product annoucement (but there will be that as well). The real "historic global announcement" is that Canon is now committed to playing a larger role in the Hollywood and television production community. They are basically embarking on new ground in a market where before they only supplied lenses.

As for a AF100/FS100 competitor, it may or may not appear in this announcement, but I have no doubt one will appear sooner or later. Canon historically makes products across a range of price points. They will not concede the $5000 large sensor price point when they already have small sensor camcorders in that same range. What Canon is really after is to sell you lenses. The more bodies they have out there, the more lenses.

If the crippled Canon cams don't meet your needs or provide enough value, definitely don't buy them! Buy the competition from Sony, Panasonic or Nikon. Losing sales is the only way Canon will listen and force them to change the specs on their DSLRs. I'm annoyed that even the 1Dx doesn't have any form of focus assist.

Although I believe there will be products, I agree that there has to be a lot more.

Unless, Scorsese shot something with their new cam and he is presenting it : )

Probably one or two products, plus a roadmap of products and lens.. maybe detailed partnerships like the technicolor one.... not long to go now!

Interesting thought... since Technicolor is Deluxe Labs now... setup the look you want in camera... and then the lab can save you time and money by doing a easier di...

Oh, no question whatsoever that they will have a competitor. Never been in doubt at all. Only thing I've said is that it would be surprisingly out of character for them to have a true AF100/FS100 competitor (meaning, sub-$6k price bracket) this quickly. That's all.

I too think it's more than just product.

I'm wondering if they're setting up a cinema imaging division, perhaps hiving off the pro end (1Dx and up) of their DSLR group and part of their video division into one pro / cinema imaging lot.

Or perhaps completely merging still and motion divisions to make one imaging division, sharing R&D and production resources.

Or, more likely, I'm talking out of my backside (Being polite)

I believe what happens today will be more interesting than affordable for most of us. With that I'm stoked as hell to see what happens!
Me too Erik, I can't wait to see what Canon is going to drop on us. At 10k plus it has to be better than the F3 to make sense price wise. I can't see less than 10k as the 1ds is already close to 7k. I gotta start selling some ass or something!

Not like Sony or, to a lesser extent, Panasonic. Canon has no high-end video cameras. Above $10-12K would be new territory for Canon.

No high-end cameras means no high end cameras to protect :)

I'm just excited Canon is throwing their hat into the ring.

Latest intel:

The Uber announcement from Canon on November 3rd, 2011 is just a few days away and I wanted to lay out what I have heard about the cameras so far. Red is also announcing the release of the much anticipated Scarlet. This is all second hand info gathered from various sources and methods including carrier pigeon.

* There will be at least two cameras announced, possibly three.
* PL and EF for sure. I also think a 5D3 will be “announced” but not shown.
* A Set of Canon Prime Lenses will be shown. All manual capability.*** This is Big.
* We already know about two PL zooms shown at NAB 2011.
* Removable LCD.
* No 60P Full HD. Only 720
* 4:2:2 with 4:4:4 Upgrade as an additional upgrade.
* $10K plus for the EF model and up to $15K for the PL version.
* I think the 5D3 will be a little higher than 5D2 at around $3K.
* There will be less expensive models to follow.

This is a first generation camera and is bound to have issues. I am excited to see what Canon has done with the availble technology, however I also know that none of these cameras will be availble before January 2012. I will continue to use the Sony FS100 and Nex 5N for our documentary The Board Of Education.

I would not bank on any of these cameras until they can prove themselves in the field. I would also not base any project around these cameras. Use what is available now. They are not going to make your film that much better that it’s worth sacrificing time or money on untested new technologyhttp://wideopencamera.com/cameras/canon-announcement-rumors-round-up-final-thoughts/
