Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

"I LOVE rumours! Facts are often misleading, but rumours, true or false, are often revealing..." - Hans Landa

Well, at least we know that this future speculation is a rumor... and not a grand announcement from the company. If you know what I mean.

Maybe the mixed message of the rumor points to two cameras. An "F3" type camera with 4k and PL mount and an "FS100" type with EF mount and 50Mbps...

More likely (if at all) 4K pixel density down sampled to 1920x1080 in a plastic video camera body for 15k? hmm - personally I have zero interest in this crap, but you tell me?

Well this is all speculation. Most rumors I have heard states that it is going to be 1080p, 7d sized sensor, EF mount, recording at 50mbs using the same mxf codec found in the XF300 camera.

I also heard it was going to be the successor to the XLH1 (in terms of ergonomics). If thats true you wont have to worry about a crappy plastic body: magnesium alloy all the way (those things are like bricks I tells ya').

It is interesting to read all the speculations. With improvements the 2nd generation Panasonic af-100 (xxx) could provide this too. But what about the Technicolor color management? Cold Canon implement that in the moving picture format?

for 15 thousand dollars I sure hope it doesn't record straight to rec.709, that would be an awful waste of that 10 or 12 bit recording depth....

No way is it 4k.
Canon will act conservatively and LATE as usual.
It will be 1080p from a multi-megapixel SLR sensor using binning or line skipping or some other trickery.
It will have an OLP optimised for 1080p, like the AF100.
It will have a Canon mount, although I would prefer they develop a new short FFD mount which can be adapted to anything - but then we wouldn't be forced to buy Canon glass, would we :)
It will have XLR audio with proper manual controls and knobs.
It will record 50mps on par with the current Canon lineup.
It will be $3k-$10k.
It will be everything the VG20 probably should have been.

Canon was first who gave us manual settings, i disagree with this statement, its sony and panasonic who cripple their cams, gh-1 should of been a monster if it would work like hacked one from the beginning with panasonic firmware.

Jannard, in a recent post, said another big competitor other than Sony is releasing a 4k+ camera... Maybe this was who? Doubt it's Panavision... it's not panasonic as far as I know.

Seems logical... no?

This sounds about right.

Canon seem to have a strategy whereby they release two versions of the same prosumer camera; one with a professional 'jackpack' (with all the pro outputs such as HD/SDI, genlock, tc etc) and then one without. This happened with the XHA1 / XHG1, the XLH1S / XLH1A the the XF300 /XF305. So its feasible that they will run the same plan with a S35 camera where you can buy the cheaper model with less pro outputs (probably much the same as the FS100), and a more expensive one with all the bells and whistles (somewhere approaching the F3).

Hahahahaha!!! That would be a comeback! My first camera EVER was a JVC and I certainly had an affiliation with them... but nothing really happened after the early 2000's so I went DVX, HVX, HPX and into my current Red, Alexa, F3, AF100 phase. I'll always root for JVC because their camera was my first experiences making films. Too bad they just never really got back into the game.

It wouldn't be unimagineable to have Canon produce a 4k video camera. Even if is only for downscaling. We have already seen a 4k concept camera from them (albeit the infamous "hair dryer"). If the next generation of DSLR's get 4.2.2 like a lot of people think and even the possibility of 4.4.4 or 10 bit with a recorder, they are going to sell a lot of those cameras. Their video division with it's higher price point would be sunk - unless of course the took a large leap in resolution or image quality.

The other competitor is Arri. Someone at Reduser posted about Arri going 4K.

JVC had a 4K camcorder on display at IBC, but it was not a S35 camera, rather a 1/2 inch sensor with fixed lens - seemingly it is in the pipeline for release (not just a concept).
