Robinhood ....again!

Everts

Veteran
Robinhood with Russel Crowe and Kate Blanchet....

I was thinking isn't this to soon for a remake ....but Ridley Scott is directing it so it has to be good.

This project started out as a revisionist take on Robin Hood called Nottingham, where the Sheriff was the good guy and Robin the villain. Somewhere along the line, they just decided to make the umpteenth version of plain vanilla Robin Hood. This seems intensely stupid to me, like buying the rights to Wicked and then deciding to re-make The Wizard of Oz.

Would be nice to see a version more sympathetic to King John, who only raised taxes to pay the ransom on his idiot brother Richard who got himself captured and held for a "King's Ransom" by the king of Hanover. The ransom was three times England's yearly output. Richard, by the way, never returned to England.

I don't think the audience is ready to make Robin Hood a villain, and to make the government the good guy...

... is probably what a producer told Ridley Scott...

I would partially agree, but also I'd want to see a new spin on things.

So far the version with Patrick Bergen, Uma Thurmond, Jeroen Krabbe and Jurgen Prochnow is hands-down the best I've seen. They chose to connect the story to lingering Norman/Saxon tensions.

True, but how about this twist in the tights: make Robin Hood a flawed hero, but make the Sherif sympathetic as well and not just a stock villain. At the act I turning point, an outside threat endangers the populace that both Robin Hood and the Sherif protect, and Robin Hood and the Sherif of Nottingham set aside their differences and team up to fight this outside menace.

It would be a different take or maybe some kind of a sequel, but it could be fun. It would be different to say the least, but could still retain some of the major themes and ideas of the plain old vanilla version of the Robin Hood legend.

That movie kicks ass. Far more historically accurate and gives a great feel for the times.

Screw The Lionheart. he wasn't even English, he was French. I don't think he even spoke English.... He was also hardly noble if the picture history paints of his deeds in the Crusades is anything close to accurate.

I would love to see them make a movie from a novel called The Sheriff of Nottingham i read a few years back. Tells the story from the other side very effectively, with the Sheriff being a hired bureaucrat just trying to do his job.

Now that I think of it, the 1938 Curtiz version is pretty amazing. It was arguably my favorite movie (along with The Longest Day and The Magnificent Seven) as a kid.

I love Olivia DeHavilland, Claude Rains is friggin brilliant, the Korngold score and Technicolor look are unforgettable. And, even in that ridiculous haircut and green tights, Flynn is more a man than I can ever hope to be.

I think we all should go on strike as movie fans to never go see a remake of anykind until the studios stop with this nonsense, too many original ideas out there. No matter how much of a fan you are of an original movie/toy/cartoon or whatever, don't see it. A sequel or prequel can get a pass, but not a remake...

Rant over...
