RIP: Steve Jobs

@ callaghan: I'm on smartphone so I can't figure out how to quote w/o taking the whole afternoon.

I'm right there with you. (I think?) I can only imagine what Facebook looks like right now. It must be insufferable.

Celebrity deaths are one of the top reasons I gave up that site.

Well when anyone famous dies, everyone is compelled to cut n paste the link. That's what I'm getting at. We all have the internet, we are all aware already.

Ahh, well you haven't been on facebook lately then. When multiple people post the same link, it will show maybe the top 2 messages and then the rest are hidden behind a "X number of people have shared this" and you can ignore all the rest if you don't click to expand.

Now if it is different things they are pasting, that won't capture, but at least you don't have to see the same link of ANYTHING 4 million times. For all the crap they change I don't like, this was a good one they changed.

It's an online homage. For many (myself included), he was very influential. That shouldn't be something easily disregarded.

Kegan

well I think were talking about 2 different things especially since I haven't checked facebook in a while. I'm just referring to people vapidly posting rip every time someone famous dies. like its a race amongst "friends" to be the first ones to get it online and on Fb.

I don't know about this online homage you speak of.

We wouldn't have Pixar if it wasn't for Jobs. If you haven't yet, you should check out the documentary "The Pixar Story" which is now available on Netflix Instant.

LOL...best headline goes to The Onion--

RIP
Steve Jobs

But I gotta say it.
Really?

I realize that facebook ('specially in the last five years) has gutted and rerenovated the entire social landscape.
But I don't think there has been an out-poring of public grief at this level since...jeez...John Lennon?? Not for Jim Henson. for Carl Sagan. for Jimmy Stewart...not even for Sinatra or Reagan (or Mother Teresa for that matter).
I did, and continue to respect Jobs as one hell of an entrepreneur (on par with Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, Gates, etc.)
Though comparisons to Ford and Edison are going a bit far IMO.
I especially love the Pixar/Disney chapters of his story.

That being said, what am I missing here?
Is this just the result of the ever shrinking world we live in?
-or-
Does it speak to this being a generation completely driven by mind/technology (as opposed to heart/passion)?

Edit:
Honest question.
I wanna know.

Edit:
...or has he, at some level, become a symbol for Cancer victims?

I think that the the thing is about the outpouring of responses to Mr. Jobs' death on the internet is that this global interconnected world, thus responding, is exactly what he envisioned, and helped to create. I think that the real innovation that he brought forth is not necessarily the products that were produced, but the integration of these products into our daily lives. To me, the outpouring of respect in response to his passing, from the global interconnected village that he was one of the first to envision, is only natural

It is always sad to see a public icon pass away. I think it reminds of us our own mortality.

But I have to fall into the camp of ..

What exactly did Jobs do that hasn't and isn't already being done, other than create a brand ? Nothing he did was revolutionary, was it ? I am not looking to piss on a mans legacy. I was truly shocked when I read the newsbite, like I would be with any celebrity, entertainer, public figure, athlete that passes on This is sad. The man passed away at a way too early age.

But

He created a brand. He did not invent the wheel, make world peace, change the world. He created a brand on a playing field already being done by others.

iTUNES - Napster

Apple - IBM, MICROSOFT

iPod - Walkman

I mean, I am struggling to understand the (can't find the words .... the LEGACY PART?)

Rest in Peace for sure. But people who say it's changed their lives and the imapct Apple has had on THEIR life....................... ? Really ?

I keep hearing the word VISIONARY; and he was. A true entrepreneur, a man with drive and a real vision. But, for what? To create a brand out of something that already exists ?

I'm totally open for a beating on this . If I am missing something, please tell me

I don't feel like I have to justify the impact that he's made on my life, but as an entrepreneur it's huge. He was the unofficial spokesperson for the entrepreneurial spirit. As filmmakers, I'm surprised people are having a hard time grasping this concept. How many times have you been told that what you're doing is nothing more than a hobby? That its a ridiculous concept to make a living from? Jobs defied all of that and encouraged those to think differently.

Thinking differently is the only way to change/affect the world and that's the mentality that he embraced.

I'm with you on this one J.R. ...very sad to lose anyone at such a young age these days...but a better discription might be 'Steve Jobs - Master Marketer'. He was a branding genius.
He was wise to let others test the waters, then refine and roll-out proprietary product that keeps you coming back for more.

+ 1

K. I'm digging that Kegan. Maybe I am just more curious than I thought; I have not been affected in the manner in which I see a lot of people being affected.

Maybe that is all.

I remember Jerry Garcia passing away and Ocean Beach being filled with mourners; while myself, and a very few others surfed until nightfall.

I can't say I have ever been thrashed by a persons death I did not know.

Henry Ford did not invent the automobile, but made it accessible to the masses. Steve Jobs, AND Steve Wozniak, did not invent the personal computer, but they made it accessible to the masses. When you get up tomorrow, and go about your day, think about the things you do, and what the contributions of Ford and Jobs/Wozniak had on it. Then let us know what you feel about this. As a reminder, anytime you interact with a digital device, using a GUI, that counts.
