I'm right there with ya, cecil995. I wish I could see the reel. I doubt it's as big of a deal that everyone's making it to be. Seems like there's just mass confusion.

Nice.

My advice to anybody who wishes to approach production houses is to request directors reels first from agencies that represent them and see how yours measures up. Not everybody is going to have the same style or approach to their art (good thing), but you'll be able to gauge where you stand and see what the industry standard is.

That is great advice.
I just thought it was worth repeating.

Many agencies will have their directors reels online as well ... it can be a great way, like angrius said, to gauge where you are in relation to where you want to be. It can also help in figuring out the best way to present your work in regards to the format and length of a reel.

wow this is a thread on edicate because i can't get it up ethier...hmm let me rephrase that. it's not coming up. i can't wait to get critiqued by angrius on my acting in CALLAGHANS sci-fi short cause he aint gonna hold back.i mean it though! i want ANGRIUS to cause it will make me strive for the better although i do like a pat on the back once in a while.

And what yellow book entry should I be looking under to contact these guys to request a reel?

Daaaamn

Angrius ripped Loki a new one.

But, he's right, and so is Luis.

And let this be read by many:

If you're going to do something, no matter how miniscule it is, do it with the idea in mind that you WANT to show it to someone and you want it to be the best effort you could've mustered, no matter the budget, no matter the restraints.

I could go out and shoot short films any time I damned well pleased, but I wouldn't dare do that unless I believed in the material. Everyone should treat their "short films" and reels as if they were truely going to be sent out to someone of importance. If you're not putting a-grade work in your portfolio, then you're not A-grade material.

Make the best shorts, reels, and features that you can. Toying around with friends is fun, but don't show your "having fun" montage and expect people to go gaga over it; you'll seem like you have no idea what you're doing with a camera.

Pft. Whatever.

Well actually there is usually a book or two in major cities dedicated specifically to the film industry and it's services. They'll list agencies that represent directors. Call up some production agencies in your area and see if they can lead you in the right direction.

P.S- Look at all the hype I have created around Loki and his work. If he fixs up his reel a bit maybe I'll represent him and take 10% for myself!

it's not up yet but i do mean what i said i want the truth cause i can handle the truth! you bast..........

most directors reel i've seen always consists of commercials with really great clients and scenes in some independent films- but usually, always tv ads which I find irrelevant to building my reel because I've got nothing like that...

Have you thought of building spec spots on your reel? This puts those big clients on YOUR reel and it puts it across to the production houses that you want to work on that level. Here is a great site to inspire you:
http://www.thespecspot.com/

If it's movies you want to direct, I suggest to get on movie sets as a P.A and network with people and see how it's done. Knocking down this illusion between what it is you think needs to happen and what it is that will make it happen is vital. Approach your Directors Guild and see what is needed to join.

no sh*t.
as an audio guy i find that *HIGHLY* disturbing.
there's been a number of projects that i've worked with that sound has made the cuts into something beyond. anywhere from watchable to intense.

seems fairly bassackwards to cut to premade audio when in production we're the last cats to see a piece of footage??!

thanks for the working link madbunny. I guess the only thing that I feel about that reel is that there are a few decent shots....but there is alot of filler....i guess so he could use the whole song? Didn't like the dancing robot and the pumpkin shot seemed out of place with everything else. I thnk that the music was not a good match with the footage......something fast like that demands a quick moving edit style ( fast cuts, footage of things moving fast) If your out to show your skills as a director, the whole point is to showcase your work with the talent. You should be able to feel some kind of emotion from your footage. and I didn't experience that at all.

I'm curious why there is no response to all the feedback he asked for......guess he didn't see this coming.

Dude! You got a lot of death and destruction in your reel. There is a hefty fill of guys beating up other guys and guys bleeding all the place. And guys dancing with other guys and guys chasing other guys around. And guys reaching and touching other guys.

Why is it such a sausage party in there??

Jus' wondering.
