I dunno dosnt seem like a good reel, just seems like a bunch of stuff thrown together.

hm.. well.. I dunno.. that is the point of a "montage" ... the reel isn't just a montage of footage.. this is just the opening before showing select scenes from my work, ie: full scenes with audio etc..

good stuff. I think the music needs to be different. (the song was great) But the visuals should stand out. the music puts a "filter" over the images. I think it needs to be more action packed. the scene of the two guys looking for the robot lingered too long. You can tighten this up much more. don't stretch it because it needs to fit the time of the song. you should be in control of the sound. not the other way around.

Great stuff though.

Tony C.

P.S. take out the pumpkin. if you want to show you can do CGI stuff, then put it on another reel about CGI :)

Actually your reel isn't anything close to a montage. A montage is a A cinematic device used to show a series of scenes, all related and building to some conclusion. Your reel has neither of these properties.

I hate to pull a Simon Cowell on you but this is one of the worst reels I've ever seen here. Are you actually thinking a production company is going to pick you up? You need to get a grip and keep this up as a hobby. You lack the talent to make it in this business. A grade 11 media student could put something together better than this. If you would have walked into Partners Film Co. when I was there, this would have been thrown in the garbage where it belongs.
Take some advice from Liquidsn as well. Take out the pumpkin..not because it shouldn't be included in a directors reel..but because it sucks.

Ouch.

Hey angrius - chill a bit, would you?

There is such a thing as constructive criticism.
Show some respect to the people on here - or don't expect to receive any yourself.
Loki is a valuable member of this site - and should be treated like it.
The same way everyone should be treated.

No one's telling you you have to like everything you see here.
But either offer something helpful - or at least keep it civil.

My advice next time you see something you apparently detest so much... move on.

Luis you have great advice on this forum and I appreciate your comment. I'm just not trying to bullshlt somebody and give them false hope when there isn't anything there. I have the background and I'm only telling him the brutally honest truth. This is grade 11 media class we're looking at here and not something a production house wants to waste their valuable time looking at and he's nowhere near ready to take that step. I suggest working on set as a P.A so he can truly understand what it is he's trying to get into.

Loki always finds the time to belittle others on this forum and I suspect it's because of his own lack of talent. I'm sure I didn't say anything he already doesn't know about himself. That being said, let me see if I can add some positive to the situation and help him on his quest for fire.

Okay here is the honest truth. If you were to bring that to any production company that is even somewhat legit in the Toronto area, you would be laughed at. That is the harsh reality. You need to invest more time in what it is you are trying to pursue and see if you actually have the talents needed to make it in this industry. If you are also interested in being able to do successful cgi work, keep working at it until you are at a level that is comparable to professionals in the industry.

Anybody can pick up a camera. Anybody can turn on a computer and cut footage. It takes true talent and skill and a lot of hard work to make it in this industry. You also need to leave your ego at the door and understand your limits. Loki from what I have seen you have a lot of work to do. I am watching your video absolution right now and although there are some interesting things in it, it just looks like something a bunch of buddies set out to do one weekend because they were bored.

Loki I'm not sure if you even understand the film and video industry where you live but if you are serious and really want to succeed in the Toronto area, I have numerous contacts that could help you out in the television and film industry. Get rid of the poor attitude and email me when you have something worth showing. Keep editing your reel until it is suitable. You may also want to request directors reels from agencies around the city to see how they are put together.

Stop feeding the fantasy and get down to some real work. I get emails from guys on here all the time asking for advice and help in reaching people in the Toronto area that can help them pursue their goals. One of them is actually working at Partners Film now because he worked his ass off and took the time and effort into building a reel that showed his talent and skills. I hope you are able to do the same thing and succeed with your goals.

i'm not eactly sure that was the point Angrius.

Should one post their reel up, it is our job to give them our opinions, and even yes, the harsh honest truths. But do so in a respectful manner, keeping in mind that these are people, with ambitions, with feelings. So instead of bashing it from " the Bizz" point of view, suggests ways in which he or she can improve the reel. there is only one reality when one reads a post like yours, and thats a feeling of pitifulness hopelessness. That is not the way one should feel after posting a video that one worked very hard on for friends on a DVX message board, supposedly aimed at sharing, commenting, improving skills and such. So not a flame on you man, but even if your trying to get something across, try to come off as a nice guy, even if your flame was meant in good stead. There are ways of approaching this kind of thing with the same intent but a more friendly and respectful manner.

But i just read your follow up post so cheers. But still, what i said should still be in effect for all.

And not to sound silly. But i would tkae your guys's advice over my film prof ( if i had one ). Because quite frankly, i believe that some of you ladies and gents are probably some of the best i've seen, in comparison to the industry. Some of you belong in the bizz, and no doubt should replace alot of what we see. So this board could easily be home, or even, the bible to film making for us young ambitious type.

Papa pretty much covered what I was going to reply - but I'll go ahead and be redundant.

Thank you.

I wasn't implying that you should give any false hope.
All I meant was that if you were going to offer criticism that you try to do it in a less hurtful manner. Your point could have easily gotten across without being as insulting as it came off. Reading your words it doesn't sound like someone who is trying to help, it sound like someone who in having fun in slamming another person's work.

I have the background and I'm only telling him the brutally honest truth. This is grade 11 media class we're looking at here and not something a production house wants to waste their valuable time looking at and he's nowhere near ready to take that step.

While I don't doubt that you have the background, and while you may even be right that a prodution house wouldn't take his reel seriously (I don't know for myself because the link no longer works so I wasn't able to see it) I still think you're jumping the gun. Do you know what Loki's next step is? Did he say he was shopping this around to production houses? All I saw was that he was looking for feedback on his reel.

I'm not sure about you, but when I first started my reel wasn't all that impressive.
But it did help show my abilities - as they were at the time... and it got me clients.
Little by little the weakest work fell off the reel, and a few years later production houses in town actually took me seriously. They never would have with my first reel, but we all have to start somewhere.

Loki always finds the time to belittle others on this forum and I suspect it's because of his own lack of talent.

If you feel that's the case, I've missed it.

I realize that your intentions were, in your own way, good.
I suppose my problem was just with the method, and tone.
Looking back I came off with a tone of 'authority' that I don't necessarily merit here.
I'm a member, just like you. Then again, so is Loki - and I simply feel we should treat eachother with the same respect we would like to be treated with.

If you're telling me you have some sort of personal issue with Loki - then perhaps email or PM would be the best way to communicate.

I don't disagree with you that 'brutal honesty' has it's place.
I just think we disagree on where that place is.
When someone posts a reel which is still being worked on and asks for feedback, I personally don't think 'brutal honesty' is the key to helping that person. Nothing good will come of that. How is that going to help him?

A person will naturally have 2 reactions to what you said, in most cases.
1) He will ignore you - due to your aggressive and taunting tone.
2) He will feel crushed, and will never post his work on here again, and possible will not post on the site again at all.

I just don't see that as 'constructive.'
I don't really want to bog down this thread anymore with this.
We've all got our opinions - which is what makes this community a great place.
I just wish we could all find a way to share them without causing harm to eachother.
We don't have to agree all the time, and we don't have to lie and give false hope -
we just have to respect one another.

If you'd like to continue this discussion, we should probably do it via PM or emal.
Feel free to drop me a line - I'm always up for discussion.

Well perhaps I forgot what this forum was for. After talking to a very wise and intelligent person here at the forum, I remembered that we are here to support each other and help anyway we can. I think I was too harsh and Loki I apologize for this. It's just that you're such a dick.
Okay that was just a little HAHA. Seriously, if there is anything I can do to help you out and point you in the right direction let me know. Email me or message me and I'll do what I can for a fellow Canuck.

Damn it I think I'm going to start to cry.

I think its all in wording.

"The sad truth is, theres a level of expectation Publishing houses have, which to be honest this doesn't meet. I know this is the first of many permutations, but as it stands, wouldn't be taken seriously by any professional houses."

Is the same as saying:

"Stick to your dayjob and enjoy your hobby. This isn't a demo reel, its randomly cut frames from shoddily construct shortfilms made by a bunch of drunk college kids with nothing better to do than smoke pot and use daddy's tuition money on a camera and tapes. You'd be laughed out of any halfass production house"

And if loki is a dick, which I hadn't noticed honestly, then he'll grow a reputation as such, and the community on the whole will respond. If people 'lower themselves' to such a level, then the community as a whole becomes lowered, and then no ones a dick, because we're all assholes.

(sly reference to team america)

Angrius, don't cry.
This is a happy place.

Thanks for being so rational.
That's a rarity online.

Just as a quick sidenote lucidz - references aren't 'sly' if you point them out.

That just wasnt a reel for me, it was like a "hey look its a mix that makes no sense of stuff I have filmed" most reels are for the purpose of selling your services. Would you send that to a buisness manager as reason for him to hire you todo a commercial?

Just when things had gotten nice again.

Get out of the water!

My advice to anybody who wishes to approach production houses is to request directors reels first from agencies that represent them and see how yours measures up. Not everybody is going to have the same style or approach to their art (good thing), but you'll be able to gauge where you stand and see what the industry standard is.

If you are more interested in becoming a long format director than perhaps it may be a good idea to approach your Directors Guild and try and get some work on set. The best opportunity would to become a directors assistant. It would give you a great opportunity to see how things are done on a real world set.
