Redrock Micro Price Increase

Well what if manufacturing the goods or buying the material got more expensive due to inflation and they held back the price increase for as long as possible.

I'm just guessing. In dubio pro reo.

they used to offer a micromount with shoulder-mounts and that kit has been on the market over 2 years. they took the micro mount off the bundle then this..!!!

Inflation...what a crock. The amount of inflation from Feb 2005 (the first appearance of Redrockmicro.com according to archive.org) and Feb 2010 is 13%...not the 30% increases we've been seeing.

Inflation, the hidden tax.

Inflation, the hidden tax.

Because of inflation? The DSLR kits have only been out for a year or so.

FWIW- Inflation is the increase in money supply through printing money out of thin air or artificially cheap credit - both are actions of the central bank, otherwise known as the Federal Reserve Bank. Inflation is a monetary and Federal Government created phenomena. It is in essence a devaluation of your dollars worth, a shrinking of it's purchasing power. Our dollar is only worth five cents compared to it's value eighty years ago.

So....It has nothing to do with how long a product has been on the market ;-) . That being said, RRM's products have been amazingly priced for a long time. I'm not sure how they avoided raising prices before now. I wish I would have bought one of their matte boxes prior to now., surely one of the better bargains out there.

Drats, and double drats.

Hotchkiss-
Head to Adorama.com right now. Just ordered my matteBox and shoulderMount an hour ago at the pricing Redrock had been offering until this week. They seem to have nearly all the pieces Redrock lists, and most in stock. Obviously Adorama hasn't shipped it yet, but I can only assume they'll be honoring the price listed. Hope that helps.
Peace,

-Harry

I know what inflation is. My point is that the dollar has not inflated 30% in the one year that the product has been on the market. It's only inflated 13% in ALL the years RedRock Micro has been around.

Sorry, but as the proud owner of much Redrock kit, I can say that it was good value at it's previous price, but does not have the design qualities of Zacuto. Zacuto is severely over-priced, but this price increase would definitely push me away from RR towards them.
Tightening down RR stuff is not convenient, and constantly requires a hex key for instance. RR stuff is much heavier and often has less adjustment possibilities. (Witness the difference in handles, one axis of adjustment vs. mulitiple for the pivot-able Zacuto).
At the end of the day, you can end up spending a small fortune for this stuff, but how much of it actually comes out of the bag on a regular basis? Certain configurations if used regularly enough would justify even Zacuto style pricing. If I am going to put something on my shoulder for the next 5 years, it better be light and designed well. Even though RR is cheaper, I am not sure it's design is often worth it. Luckily more alternatives are coming to market....

It could be that they're adjusting their prices for sustainability? Kit like this exciting new wireless follow-focus and their very comprehensive matte box are expensive to develop.

I'm just a distributor, but know what it's like to have to find the line between keeping the doors open and being the least expensive option out there.

Have you seen the wireless follow focus in person? I like how they describe it as "Ergonomic."

They should have stuck to what they do best or licensed the technology from Viewfactor Studios.

Seriously.

According to the CPI, its value is equal to about 7.8 cents 80 years ago.

The Redrock Remote is a gamble. They know that what they established their reputation on, the 35 adapter market is dying. They are attempting to fill a part of that gap with this new product. The additional price increases for the other rigs which are selling represents the other part of the equation. Let's be clear. This is not about inflation forcing prices up. When the core of your business is dying you need to find new alternatives, and quickly.

Brian responded to my mail to him about this issue. I do not want to fish for users here at the dvxuser site, so I apologize to the mods here in advance. Brian's follow up is in the camera support section of Cinema5D, and he may respond further there...just thought anyone interested here should know.

Why couldn't you post a summary of his response? Am I supposed to go searching through Cinema5D to find the answer?

Red Rock is a great company. Look how far they've come from essentially nothing. And their prices are a little high for me right now, but that's because I'm shooting short films and not commercial work. It's still cheaper than Zacuto, and much cheaper to outfit a DSLR than to shoot with a high-end setup. If I had clients, and I wanted to charge them a pro rate, then I'd be very hesitant in showing up with just a DSLR on a tripod. So not only are their rigs fantastic and customizable, but I think it does leave an impression to have a professional looking set up. You will be taken more seriously, and you will probably make back your investment quickly this way.

I haven't purchased from them in some time, but my prior experience has been great.

Well I know I will no longer be recommending RedRock Micro until this is resolved. Either build it yourself or if that's not good enough buy from Zactuo...their stuff is expensive but it is incredibly high quality.
Actually Redrock stuff is a bit better, and Zacuto, famous for their $100 foam donuts, is still more expensive.

the 35mm market is dying because people don't know just how good their new adapter is, and because they overestimate how good DSLRS are because of a lot of hype.

Ruffo, either you are a Redrock Shill or you are high. To state that redrock is better than Zacuto is just plain silly. The fit and finish on every Zacuto product is as far beyond Redrock stuff as Redrock is beyond indisystem. This is coming from someone who owns both Redrock and Zacuto gear and uses both on every shoot I do.

Redrock customer service has been superb with me. Quick responses and excellent attention to detail. I have many, if not most, of their line-up of products. Excellent value. If I were in the market for a mattebox - Redrock would be it! Even at $995 its a steal. I had a petroff 4x4 that cost me $1499.00 and a Chroszeil 4x4 that cost $1799.00, Redrock's mattebox wins IMHO. I sold the others and am very happy. Price increases happen all the time, but I too am surprised at the sharp jump.

Also, having been an owner of two Zacuto DOF Kits, one sold and one still here; I agree that you cannot compare the two products.
