FS7: RED Scarlet-W

Great feature set! That's a lot of camera for the money.

If the new 'Standard' OLPF yields an acceptable 800 ISO with solid highlight rolloff, this could be very interesting.

Looks like the F5 will finally have a real competitor in the mid-range of digital cinema cameras now. It's really been kinda on it's lonesome for some time now.

I'd stated an opinion in other threads that the Sony cinema series is due for an update. Now, with Raven and Scarlett-W out, surely Sony can't sit idle.

This is just what Sony needed!

Also, does the VariCam35 still exist? Is Panasonic done?

I like this possibility much better than the RAVEN, but remember it's really a $16K camera (at least). I think, the truth is however, before I would invest in this, I would wait until the next generation sensor. I have already elucidated what I feel to be the shortcomings of Dragon elsewhere (hate the skin tones, but still better than the Epic) but I think the next gen will probably get this ironed out. I do like the side by side internal RAW/Prores equation and I think this is really a 5th gen cam so it's operability is going to be optimized.

Looks amazing. Not sure whether to move my Raven deposit or not. Sort of feel there is something to be said for the smaller cheaper lighter Raven in its own right.

Also, if I buy the Scarlet I'd have to sell the FS7 as well I think..

EDIT: Yup, the camera with ssd bay and ef mount comes to £12,500 + VAT. It's 100% worth it but it's just that tiny bit too high for me to know I'll get a return on it and I've made some rules for myself after being burned i the past. Budget for the clients you have, not the clients you want :)

In a sense I think it's positioned as the new Epic. The lower cost everyday workhorse Red. Perfect for smaller or indie feature films.

I'm amazed how anyone can hate the skin tone of Dragon.
Just shot an 8 hour interview for a documentary yesterday on Dragon and everyone thought they looked great.
But we are all different....

I sometimes dislike my magenta FS7 skin tones though.

Scarlet W looks like a great camera

Ben, I hear you.
After some thinking I will keep my Raven deposit. I would have to sell my FS7 to get the Scarlet.
I really think the Raven will be an easier sell than scarlet for certain producers

Raven is great for Gimbal use, great as a second camera to FS7/F5 etc. This is different. It sits firmly in the middle of Red's camera line-up and at a very good price for the features it's offering. If I'd just bought an Epic I'd pissed...

Absolutely. This is basically the new Epic, with the Weapon being more specialist.

Magnesium Epic Weapon sales might take more of a hit than Raven sales as that's the 'owner operator' Red until today and the price of entry to that tier of performance and PL mount has just come way down. I think you'd be looking at £15-18,000 for a very well specced Scarlet-W shooting kit from scratch. Not peanuts but one hell of a lot of camera for the price.

If I have to think twice about Raven I can tell myself Daredevil was shot on Dragon at 4k - crazy crop factor and all - and looks great. I even like the skintones :)

Interesting marketing move. We get people to pre-order a bargain camera, the deal of the century and then release a new version with a higher spec at over twice the cost and everyone is thinking, oh perhaps I should change my pre-order to the new version because it has this or that feature.

I'm quite happy about this camera as hopefully it will get Sony to upgrade the F5/55 line with some new features.

Red have always said this was coming. They said it would be announced at NAB but it's come early. Anyone can move their deposit if they want. They are two different cameras in different price ranges for different needs. Some people have a requirement for Nikon or PL or Leica Mount. Some people have other requirements but couldn't stretch to a Weapon so were looking at Raven as a halfway house where they could then rent a Weapon brain when then needed it.

A ready-to-shoot 5k Red DSMC2 for the price of a C300mk2? Again, some people just want to bash Red for no reason. The idea of slagging off the price of either of these two cameras is utterly absurd.

EDIT: I got my prices wrong. It is £12500 INCLUDING VAT for the package including the base V-lock/IO module so for under £15,000 including VAT you could be ready to rock and roll.

I'm not slagging anything off. My point was that people like yourself have already pre-ordered a camera at a certain price, but now you are probably thinking about changing your order to a far more expensive investment. You should be happy as it's the camera you wanted. Are you not going to change your order?

If I wasn't so lazy I would sell my F5 but I can't be arsed taking a massive loss on a camera that works great just to move on to the next thing. Even if Sony release a new F5/55 replacement I won't be buying it for the same reasons. If Sony let me upgrade the F5 internals then I would be happy to spend more money but I'm done with the change camera every two years attitude now. What I really need to do is stop being so obsessed with camera tech and get back in to being creative with the tools I own.

No, I had a look at it and I'm going to keep the Raven because it makes more sense for me. Then down the line depending on work/clients I'll see about swapping out the brain as I wil have all the supporting bits. For me it's one of the good things about that ecosystem.

I think the only people who are swapping out a Raven order for a Scarlet-W are ones who were looking for something more and would have paid more to begin with.

If I had an F5 I'd run it into the ground. I think the sweet spot of a return for selling has passed so instead I'd use it and use it until it was no longer relevant in the industry, which will probably be a couple of years yet.

I genuinely think people need to stop talking about the Ursa mini in the same breath as those cameras.

Nothing from it looks even vaguely in the same ballpark of quality as the FS7, let alone them. Realistically it will be going head to head with the C100mk2 and the FS5.

In what terms? Purely IQ mini will be ahead of the two mentioned. I'm talking about people deciding between raven and ursa mini. It may sway them over Red as upgrade path will be cheaper then before having all the accessories and body being not much more expensive.

It's in a FS7 category so let's talk about where one or another exceeds. Some sort of comparison.

Not really interested in paper specs as we all learn pretty quickly the claims of a manufacturer rarely hold up under closer scrutiny. See Sony's raw or in-camera luts as a recent example.

Every bit of footage out there so far from the Ursa Mini 4.6k looks awful. I haven't seen anything at all past some paper specs to suggest it is in the Sony FS7 class of camera.

I hope it's brilliant but every single BM camera so far has been handicapped by poor design choices and a fairly small 'Goldilocks Zone' where everything aligns and allows its images to shine and thus far there is nothing at all out there to suggest this is any different. Also it is already 6 months late.
