FS7: RED Scarlet-W

This is just what Sony needed!

Also, does the VariCam35 still exist? ...
Still the same price too. Good product but kind of a stand-alone wolf out there (pardon the pun).

Magnesium Epic Weapon sales might take more of a hit than Raven sales as that's the 'owner operator' Red until today and the price of entry to that tier of performance and PL mount has just come way down. ...

Red have always said this was coming. They said it would be announced at NAB but it's come early...
My inference from this is that the insiders know who's working on what camera and the NAB'16 will see a lot of new products (like that 2015 URSA Mini 4.6K ... heh) and it's occasionally better to fire a preemptive salvo.

BTW, there likely to be a lot of new products launched between the CES and the NAB but this is more of a pro camera while others can be hybrids, etc.

Red have always said this was coming. They said it would be announced at NAB but it's come early. Anyone can move their deposit if they want. They are two different cameras in different price ranges for different needs. Some people have a requirement for Nikon or PL or Leica Mount. Some people have other requirements but couldn't stretch to a Weapon so were looking at Raven as a halfway house where they could then rent a Weapon brain when then needed it.

A ready-to-shoot 5k Red DSMC2 for the price of a C300mk2? Again, some people just want to bash Red for no reason. The idea of slagging off the price of either of these two cameras is utterly absurd.

EDIT: I got my prices wrong. It is £12500 INCLUDING VAT for the package including the base V-lock/IO module so for under £15,000 including VAT you could be ready to rock and roll.

Summed up a lot of the new RED scenario quite well. This pricing jives with my calculations as well. This pricing would include sufficient memory modules, the pack to get decent outboard audio into the unit, red brick batteries and all the other RED accessories to have a decent functioning unit.

Another way to look at it is you need a certain amount of RED camera accessories to get it functional in a production environment. The Scarlet-W adds about 5 grand USD onto the price from a Raven. You decide if that 5 grand is worth the extra kit and specs the Scarlet-W offers. Swapable lens mounts to either PL or Nikon is a huge boon in my books let alone the extra horsepower the Scarlet-W has.

In summary on price is US and CDN dollars

Raven $20K USD / $27K CDN

Scarlet-W $25K USD / $32K CDN

If you are heavily invested in Canon lenses obviously the Raven is still a very attractive proposition.

The only "hey what's going on" I read last night on REDUser was coming from Epic owners who were also gutted at last year's NAB with the uber expensive upgrade path to RED's newest offerring.

What I really need to do is stop being so obsessed with camera tech and get back in to being creative with the tools I own.

Something I have been telling myself lately as well. Only it extends to lighting gear as well. ( Do I REALLY need that kino Celeb or Hive plasma par? Are either going to bring me more work or allow me to up my day rate? The former is unlikely, the latter is a definite No. ) Lusting for a set of Canon CN-e primes and other higher end kit is only natural, I suppose, but there is a hella' lot of stunning work out there that was executed on plain ole' Canon EF zooms sans fancy matte box and with only a haggard tungsten Arri kit.

Lately I have been asking myself: For every hour you spend researching gear and studying the technology how many hours did you put towards obtaining jobs with the kit and knowledge you currently possess? All too easy for that ratio to become grossly out of whack!

Not really interested in paper specs as we all learn pretty quickly the claims of a manufacturer rarely hold up under closer scrutiny.
Me too! I was thinking more about usability in certain aspects and situations. For example audio is a lot better on FS7 out of the box- what costs have to be added to get them similar in same place?
Baked in footage- FS7 exceeds here (2K only on Scarlet-W).

I have to confess I spend too much time on this... :/

So, as I suspected, Canon Rumors think that 1D X MKII will be announced around the CES time. I assume it'll be crippled in some aspects, as to not to cannibalize the C300 MKII sales, but should aim at FS5/FS7 price range (as should the expected Nikon/Samsung D5)

On the Red front, a lot of people are getting confused and then annoyed by the pricing. It is a modular system. Stop thinking that the cost of the brain is the cost of the camera and that they are then stiffing you for the extras. Several bits put together make the camera. The brain is the brain. The camera itself is comprised of brain plus modules/mounts/ssd/monitor. You can pick and choose these to suit exactly how you work and your budget.

That might make the camera out of your/my budget, but conceptually it makes a ton of sense, and with the module sdk opened up to 3rd party makers there is going to be a load of cheaper modules on the market in 2016.

Re media. Typically I'd say 2 x 128GB cards would be a bare minimum for a day shoot. Ideally you'd want more. It never stops getting annoying paying that much for media, whether it be Red mini-mags or Sony XQD

I'm amazed how anyone can hate the skin tone of Dragon.

You are not alone in that thought Yoak...

It is without a doubt one of the top 3 motion sensors in the world & it wouldn't be if it couldn't render skin tones correctly :) Statements such as those are silly and stem from inexperience or never having operated one in the first place.

I don't think a anyone(other than you) ever hoped the 1DX series would offer "competitive" video features. They are two completely different cameras targeted towards two completely different industries.

The 1DX is a flagship product who's primary markets are action/sports/wildlife & photojournalism. Most of which will never care about vector scopes/waveforms/10bit video/sound monitoring/high fps/LUTS or internal ND. As a 1DX mk I owner, if you asked me, Would they be cool features to have? Absolutely! Would they sell any more units? No, at least not enough to move the volume Canon would need to clear profit margins by merging r&d from two separate camera divisions.

It's in a higher class than the FS7. Footage is 100x nicer based purely on IQ.

I too would like nothing more than to see this "100x nicer footage". Where may one witness such beauty?

Canon have pretty much put all their eggs in the 'C' cameras for video and ceded the stills hybrid camera space to others now. The 1D is quite a specialised niche tool for journos.

Understandably though. Canon 5D is a remarkable photo camera. When i bought my A7 II the first thing i noticed, is that it was not a professional stills camera. Though its better for my landscape photography needs, and video needs.

Unless I'm wrong, it looks like the scarlet won't have internal ND's. Can anyone explain the rational for RED's policy in this regard ? For me its just a general PITA smaller5 budget work. Is there an optical reason?

The Red Motion mount offers variable ND along with Global shutter and is available for EF or PL mount.

FS7-style ND wheel would be great but I guess the philosophy is that it's a cinema camera and not an eng camera. In reality all those lines should be blurring over the next year or so.

Red has a form of variable ND called motion mount. ( a lot more adjustable ) which would work on Scarlet weapon I think?

However this highlights a classic difference between Red and Sony philosophy , Sony is about Broadcast , Red is about film production , matte boxes, separate audio record , focus control, DIT etc etc. Because of this Red is not an ideal for Run & gun it's been designed for camera crews not a cameraman , but maybe that can change with Raven . Scarlet W seems to be aimed very much at fictional narrative work not event, sports, reality.

Yup, although I tend to divide it up into stuff which you have control over and stuff you don't. You can make a Red do all sorts like you can make an FS7 do more than it should, but it shines whne you have control over a scene or environment. I think the FS7 shines when you are throwing it into the unknown :)

Motion Mount looks pretty interesting. Can anyone explain how it works or point me to a good web page on it. I tried searching but didn't come up with much of value.
