Red Raven Official

abreu-canedo;1986581738 -Ursa does 4k 120fps RAW at 3:1 and ProRes444. I believe these are continuous recording [/QUOTE said:
It also does it in uncompressed RAW (I believe it's actually about 1.5:1)

Yes it does use dual card recording to achieve this but that's not a problem at all, it just works, then export cards into same folder and they get amalgamated.

Well honestly thanks for bringing that up. I didn't think there was an option. However how much is a 7q/fs700 and all your media? Also don't you have to buy the rights to even shoot 4K? Personally I wouldn't count it really shooting 4K 120 raw given the fact it has a 4 second burst... but thats just me. I guess you can make it work if everything works out perfectly all the time.

Another thing, I've heard from friends using that set up the 7Q is far from reliable. But thats 2/3 people I know that have used them at some point.
Sony FS700 brand new $3999. Odyssey 7q+ brand new $2295 (includes two 256GB
drives) if you do need more media, the 7Q can now use certain Samsung Pro 850 hard drives.
I've seen the 512GB ones as low as $209. And the 4k Raw license is $995. So you could
be up and shooting 4k Raw 120fps for $7289 if my math is correct. Of course this is only
a 4 sec burst so maybe not enough for many, just pointing out the options.

Dunno about reliability, I've never experienced any problems, but some people
may. But this is true with everything, including Red cameras 😉

But can you get Sgamut3.cine from FS700? That's huge in my opinion.

Also FS700 is limited to 12-bit RAW - mind you that's quite decent.

Raven will do 120fps at 13:1, which depending on who you talk to either is ok or its garbage. I find you can shoot 13:1 if you are not shooting a highly detailed scene such as a forest.
have you seen anything at 13:1? you are correct that everybody sees things differently, but you will have a hard time finding anyone (who actually has worked with red) shooting 13:1 4K for 4K finish....it looks mushy for 2K finish...

Um yes, which is why I said what I said. It can look bad no doubt but that is if you are shooting as I said earlier a very detailed scene. Shooting someone to camera or lets say car pulling into frame is doable, especially with enough light. And I am talking about on the Dragon Sensor btw. Also I am speaking strictly slo-mo not shooting the entire project 13:1 for a 4K finish. That being said if you shoot that high in compression and you are delivering 1080 it looks just fine.

There's a thread over at RedUser that I started to inquire about this issue, as this was my biggest concern with pre-ordering the Raven. People posted some high framerate 4K 13:1 footage, some of which, looked excellent. Also, consider that you can also shoot 4K 100fps at 10:1, and 4K 75fps at 8:1 (estimates). Additional you can drop to 3K and get even lower ratios. Those are very acceptable compression ratios, as many Hollywood movies are shot at 7.5:1 and 8:1.

Point being, I've seen what's capable, and have confidently made my pre-order.

glad you made up your mind nathan:)
looking at and working with footage is the only way to find out what will work for you....

Thanks Paul. It's been a struggle to say the least. I've been heavily vested in comparisons and debates on 4 different camera forums, trying to determine the pros and cons of the available options. I understand that the Raven is not a good fit for most people (especially with the Mini coming out soon), however for my line of work it's by far the best option. I'm confident in that decision now, and am really looking forward to February (pending they release it on time lol). Thank you to those who argue their stance along the way. Even the jerks.

Nope.....Slog 2. Not saying its a perfect option by any means. Just pointing out another
somewhat affordable option if you need 4K 120 Raw. Granted it's limited in several ways but it
may work for some people on a budget. You could probably rent it pretty cheap too.

what is the "best "compression dragon epic can do in 4k 120fps ?

It depends on what media you're using.

Epic Dragon with mini-mag 1TB or 512GB maxes out at 200 MB/s
Epic Dragon with mini-mag 240 or 120 max out at 170 MB/s

Which means:

With 1TB or 512GB mini-mags, @ 4K 120fps the least amount of compression is 9:1. You can squeeze out 8:1 if you shoot 4K widescreen (2.39:1).

With 240GB or 120GB mini-mags, @ 4K 120fps the least amount of compression is 11:1. You can squeeze out 10:1 shooting in a 2:1 or 16:9 aspect ratio or 9:1 shooting in 4K widescreen (2.39:1).

With the old 1.8" SSD's, you can't even hit 120 fps in full 4K. You can just barely do 120fps with a 20:1 compression at 4K widescreen. To get anywhere near the compression ratios above, you'd have to step all the way down to about 2.5K. The old media is definitely a bottleneck.

Thanks a lot !

imo it's all good, definately a not bad camera, but i will be another grumpy one regarding media prices...basically they use slow in house made ssd's, you can get almost 3x faster ssd's for 8x less the price (i do understand that they have better build quality but not for 8x the price imo). Its not 2012 peaople...but other than that its all good imo.

Ditto! But I just started work on a show on which might allow me to get both the Raven and the Mini. Major roadblock is the wife....

4K 120 12:1 looks fine. I have never had an issue with it. Heck I shoot some stuff in 5K at around 15:1 and it still looks phenomenal. I think each user creates their own problems. It's like anything else the end result is that of which the User is able to render.

Here is a sample 4K 120p 12:1 shot. Please don't re-distribute or post. Personal use only.

edit: download expired. I'll re-up.

Also the Ursa does it. Uncompressed (well it's a tiny bit I believe) and RAW 3:1 120fps in 4k with global shutter for $4,000!
Steve

Yes, with the "coming soon" V2 (12 stops) 4k sensor, for $5,000. Also, this is the regular 16 lbs body.

Just adding on some details, with all those Ursa or Ursa mini coming soon, it's hard to keep track ;)

No, there is still confusion about this - the V2 sensor has been out for months and has been shipping with all new Ursas. It's the 4k and 4.6k Minis and the 4.6 turret that haven't shipped yet.
