Red Raven Official

Good to know, does this apply to transcoding in real time as well? And does that include multiple layers on a time-line?
I don't use FCPX, can I replicate that performance with PP on a mac machine?

Most of my shoots are multi-cam, and lost time adds up quickly, as does hiring multiple data managers.

I've had good experiences cutting 4K Red files in Premiere on both Mac and PC. I've found the biggest obstacle to cutting Red (or any 4K Raw footage) is HDD speed/setup.

I'm sure there are many valid objections to Raven's format. But seriously… (and this is not directed to anyone special) if a camera gets released that isn't for you… why waste time bashing it around users who think it's the greatest thing since the man purse?

Amen to that. And best comparison ever.

If I can scrub through RED EPIC 5K and do some color tweaks for one of my clients through remote desktop software, I can't see there being any issue with RED RAW footage for really anyone unless you're on a pre i-series machine perhaps?

This is what we sometimes due here on DVX, maybe due to lack of projects or just boredom. Anyone remember the Digital Bolex thread?

So I wonder how this RAVEN will stack up to the DVX200 4K camera for around $4200 bucks: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...corder&p=1986581471&viewfull=1#post1986581471

red raw is fine in fcpx and redcine-x as long as you adjust your settings to 1/8 or 1/16 maybe 1/4 (depending on your system)...
if you want to get into heavier editing incl layers in fcpx you really need at least an iMac with 4gb vram....it just gets too choppy on even the top of the line mbp.....
resolve really requires more vram to start with.....it might let you start a project but forget nodes and such on a mbp, even the 4vram iMac will choke pretty quickly.....
i agree that one can work with and view red raw on almost any system but to actually edit and finish something in 4K you really need a beefier machine......mac pro 8 core 2xD700 will be ok....
i don't have much experience with 4k BM raw dngs but i expect similar requirements? i know they play back on my mbp in resolve at the lowest quality setting but i would not want to start editing and fcpx does not even see them as motion sequences...

Because a lot of folks are very ambivalent about the man purse? And Manpris.

I carried a man purse around recently when I attended the Toronto International Film Festival. It was great to hold my tablet, car keys, mints, business cards and more.

I admit to having an underlying uneasy feeling about it. But I got use to it.

I know this thread is about the Raven camera, not Raven post, and RedUser can provide a lot of useful info, but, is anyone on this forum cutting and delivering feature length 4K .R3d files?
If so, what platform are you using (Mac, PC) and what are the specs of your machine? Any hiccups along the way?

I typically cut in PP and color in Resolve. My machine is getting a bit old now: 2.8 quad-core Xeon, 12MB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT + NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 video cards.

On a 12 core Mac Pro 2010 edition with Titan Black no problem whatsoever in Premiere, DaVinci, or any FX/Grading software. Just drag and drop. I get real time full resolution in 5K unless I am using way too many nodes/layers. Zero issues. Working with Red files is no longer a problem.

That said, I am not personally a fan of how Dragon looks and behaves. I personally prefer MX. It has it's own mojo I really like with the grading tricks and homebrew filters we use. People always talk about highlight roll-off, but we do a lot of night scenes and scenes that are entirely artificially lit with no natural light or even the use of practicals at all (I don't like natural light in cinematography). A such, to us what's really important is shadow roll-off, and here MX is a dream.

For this reason, used Scarlet is for my tastes a better deal, in a similar price range. However, your opinion may differ. But you still have this trade-off:

Get Raven with a lot of sensor area crop, no interchangeable mount, but Dragon sensor.

Or

Get used Scarlet with much less sensor crop, interchangeable mount and MX Sensor.

It all depends on personal tastes, and whether you think a larger sensor contributes more to an image looking great than Dragon's color benefits, if you think they are benefits based on the type of work you do and your personal tastes. I don't, but many do. Either way it's not an easy choice.

As to why. Because it's RED and they stir the pot. And because there isn't anything for under 11-12 grand that I can think of that shoots 4K 120 raw. You don't have to buy or even like RED but if you're going to discuss the camera atleast read what its capable of first. Like the whole part about it shooting 4K...
Let me introduce you to the lowly FS700 paired with a 7q. Unergonomic? Ok. Limited to a
4 second burst? Yup. But capable of shooting 4k 120 Raw? Absolutely. Oh yeah, and under
11-12 grand? Check....with current prices it's closer to 7 grand. Just for anyone's information.....

Well honestly thanks for bringing that up. I didn't think there was an option. However how much is a 7q/fs700 and all your media? Also don't you have to buy the rights to even shoot 4K? Personally I wouldn't count it really shooting 4K 120 raw given the fact it has a 4 second burst... but thats just me. I guess you can make it work if everything works out perfectly all the time.

Another thing, I've heard from friends using that set up the 7Q is far from reliable. But thats 2/3 people I know that have used them at some point.

Cameras that shoot 4K 120P

-FS700 + 7Q
-Blackmagic URSA
-AJA CION
-Canon C500

But the Raven is a great addition. It look like it's going to be the slo-mo camera.

Also the Ursa does it. Uncompressed (well it's a tiny bit I believe) and RAW 3:1 120fps in 4k with global shutter for $4,000!
Steve

I believe the URSA only shoots 4k/120 using 2x CFast 2 cards simultaneously. Still dramatically less expensive than Red, but worth noting that the Red can do it with one card.

4K at 120/240 fps is great, but as you already know, they are not all created equal. Part of the discussion, in my humble opinion, is at what compression?

$10k price range:
-Fs700/O7Q only does 4K 120/240fps for four seconds, which turns out to be 40 seconds or so, but it is still RAW at somewhere around 3:1...please correct me if I am wrong, here. It can also encode it to PreRes 422HQ.
-Ursa does 4k 120fps RAW at 3:1 and ProRes444. I believe these are continuous recording
-Cion?
-Raven?

The reason, why I think this should be part of the conversation is because if 4k 120fps is gonna be super compressed, it may not cut well with other footage, amongst other problems. If Raven can do 4k 120fps at 5:1, that would be pretty cool. If it starts going past 7:1 or 9:1, I wonder what the results would be.

Personally, I am glad Red is releasing the Raven. More options. I am just curious to see the images!

dragon epic and weapon can't do 4K 120fps at 5:1

Raven will do 120fps at 13:1, which depending on who you talk to either is ok or its garbage. I find you can shoot 13:1 if you are not shooting a highly detailed scene such as a forest.
