Would someone figure out what a reasonable working package would cost (non-jetpack), itimized? There is a "recommended" tab, but how many people are going to get a red brick 6 pack for $2100? I spent 20 min. in the store, and found it totally confusing. Does the "basic package" get you everything you would need except batteries and media? What else would a working professional want?

The Basic i/o package gets you everything, including 120GB media, except for power. You need a V-Mount battery in addition to that.

Oh, and probably a Mini-Mag reader too... (Red station MiniMag $195).

I'm hoping I can swap the V-mount i/o for the XL normal base extender as I'd probably go with XL volt myself.

Any guess how long the Red volts will last vs. th Volt XL's... found a charge time...
red volts last about 15-20 min, XL about 45...
once of the packages listed the V mount belt clip which s by far the cheapest way to power RED....and keeps the weight off the camera...but there is that cable....
sprint 2016 is a long time and with RED specs, prices and maybe the whole package might change....the only constant is change.....

All of this looks Awesome. One thing that kind of bothers me though when looking at the packages, neither of them come with a battery, Brick nor Redvolt? Only an AC adapter? Is that right? That seems a little ridiculous to me. Regardless, I was deadset on buying a 4.6k URSA mini for months, this is making reconsider, but I hate that it won't be available until Feb.

There's a very good chance you might not see the Mini until then too.

Can someone tell me how RED justifies the price of their mini-mag's? 512GB card for $2450.

The cost of R&D, certifying them to ensure consistent speeds at all compression ratios, manufacturing, overhead, taxes, salary, benefits, etc.

It is the cost of doing business.

Thanks. I guess this is assuming you don't need an EVF or OLED monitor.

this will look even stranger come spring or summer 2016 when raven will actually ship.....and CF2 and XQD prices have dropped to not novelty levels....
it's even crazier to think that every macbook now has storage 2?3? times faster....
i guess a big part of the price is the timeless design:)

>Is there a way to use my collection of AB batteries rather than V Mount?

I don't know what Red's solution is to this, but there are many AB to V-mount adapters.

When the shooting package is $50,000, then $2,450 is a fairly small portion of it. On a $5,000 model, however, it looks absurd. Red needs this pricing structure to turn profit on accessories in order to compensate its others costs but the current market makes these prices appear obscene. I expect some reality reflecting changes before the camera is released. I also expect its main competitors to make their own complete shooting packages more affordable as well.

I bought a Sandisk CFAST 2.0 120GB card for $1200 in September 2014.

With those numbers - if prices did not drop - I would have paid $4800 for 480GB. RED could probably charge more if they wanted to and people would still buy them.

When you are on a shoot and the production costs are $10K - $20K per day...and months of an entire crew's collective thoughts and energy sits on those cards...you'd be glad you paid a premium for premium cards....that work perfectly with REDcode in specific.

I think the issue is when shooters don't need that reliability, but they don't have any other option.

For a lot of professionals to shoot for a living, its critical.

The thing is, are you paying for reliability or just because RED has its branding slapped onto it? I've never had a $20 SD card fail on me over the last 6 years starting with a DSLR. Are these cards designed specifically for RED or are they just repackaged and re-branded SSD's?
