Red Raven Official

No, that's wrong.

You need the Base Expander which will give 3.5mm microphone input. It's only $1,750... ...just need to add an XLR to RCA and you're good to go...

Ha! That's funny "ONLY" $1750 for one mini jack input and a headphone jack, HDMI and SDI

The WEAPON® Base Expander is an ideal connector module for the general user’s Input/Output (I/O) needs. Manufactured from lightweight and durable magnesium, this low-profile module mounts directly to theWEAPON or RED RAVEN™ BRAIN® and offers interface connections for power (DC IN), HDMI, 3G-SDI (HD-SDI), CTRL and SYNC ports (for Timecode and Genlock), as well as a 3.5mm microphone input and a 3.5mm line-level headphone out.
The WEAPON Base Expander also offers rear-mounting support for the camera system-compatible battery and power modules, such as the WEAPON REDVOLT XL Module. The low profile WEAPON Base Expander offers a variety of connectors and is ideal for run-and-gun and independent shooters.

A couple of things about Red .

- Audio has always been of lesser importance than vision. As the expectation is audio will be recorded onto a separate device Ala film by an audio op . Hence the built in mic for syncing with an external source and a possible issue for one man run gun type ops.

- 2ndly , current Raven to get any signal out of it you will need what they call the base expander for $1750 on top of the existing Brian. I don't know why they do this but there it is . You can shoot without it playback thru the 5 inch screen etc but to run wifi ala paralinx/ Terradeck or any other signal including HDMI you will need the base expander.

- Power options, best bang for buck is not Red power options go v mount, AB, gold. Adapters can easily be had from Wooden Camera & the like. The problem with this route is you will need a base expander.

- Those moaning about media costs get over it. In explanation I have 2 words that may help give you some
perspective , Film & P2 . This camera most probably isn't for you.

PS just saw the above posts this camera system is not under 10k it is over maybe 15k which still works out less than F5 or C300ii fully kitted out combos.

Erik, I really appreciate all your posts, but now you seem just hating.

Of course 1750€ for a piece of metal and some connectors is crazy. But you're not spending this on material but on added functionality.
Didn't you have a C100 at one point?
Canon did similar crippling and if the C-series would be as modular as RED cams, adding an SDI port
to the C100 (like the C300 already has) would probably cost the same as the RED expander.
If you look at what features separate the C100 from the C300 (basically one and the same camera image wise) adding each of them probably costs a grand too
(costs you, not Canon...)
And your GH4? The YAGH interface was around 2000¢ when it came out - just to add some connectors.

For me (and many others) the RAVEN still doesn't make sense economically, but it is a hell of an offer.

LOL! No. I'm not hating and I don't mean to sound that way. See It bugs me that RED comes along with the idea that you can get into RED Raven camera for $6K. #4K4ALL. So many people just don't get it. RED doesn't work that way and then the disappointment kicks in or worse they buy and don't really know what they are getting into only to sell it off because it wasn't the right camera for them due to high cost of ownership. Yes if you know what you're doing and have a clear understanding of the "true" cost then I'm sure you will love the Red Raven.

Yes I bought the GH4 and a YAGH for a project and in hindsight I regret it. I could have saved my money and used a Juicelink box because the YAGH was and is a bad product. Glad I sold it when I did. The C100 and a external recorder was a great bargain compared to the C300. No brainer. Not real sure what your point was. :-D

Anyway people need to have realistic expectations with RED. So if I sound like a hater i'm sorry. I feel most people are better served with other options.

Am I reading it wrong or does the nearly $10,000 package not come with a battery/module?! Also, you get the mini-mag but it doesn't mention anything about the card reader for it.

I would avoid the red Battery module, I suspect this is a ploy to get you into buying Red batteries . Which are fine for short run stuff but inferior when you need extended shooting + $$$$ vs volt hours . However there is weight penalty with v mounts etc. ie gimbal issues.

Mini Card reader $200 Also G force now sell one.
