FS7: Red Raven and FS7

Man 2K 240 on red is like 4x crop factor! Gotta hand it to Sony for doing full sensor reads up to 240fps even if only 2K - at least FOV is preserved compared to regular speed shooting.

this film looks fantastic!

Go see Spectre at the cinema while it's still on. The opening shot is worth the price alone, and then the helicopter fight is even better. I think I prefer it to Skyfall in some respects but both are great Hollywood films and we don't get many of them these days.

I know you hate to admit it but you are a Sony fan. Next step for you should be the F65 when they come on to the used market at a great price

C300 mk2 is only like 120fps at 720p isn't it?

I think Sony maintaining an S35 FOV for its slomo is amazing, even if it is pixel binning all over the place and I've decided it is nowhere near good enough to use for my needs at 240fps. More than happy to use the 1080p at 150 for the odd thing though, but will be happier using the 4k @ 120fps on the Red. The quicker I can leave 1080p acquisition behind the better :)

For the FS7 folks, they should gather up and reach out to the folks and mosaic engineering and see if they can fabricate a 2K OLPF to retrofit into the FS7 somehow. They've done it for DSLR's, so surely they can do it for any camera.

Then there should be no quality issues with the full scan HFR off the sensor.

I don't get this fascination with "Off speed" . The use of it has become everywhere , on everything with hardly any thought . It is an effect , becoming the zoom lens of the 60s & 70s.

It has at times become unforgivable, making a boring shot more boring by extending the boringness by 6 times as much. Imo if you are serious about it plan for it & hire a phatomflex. 120 , 240fps seen it all before 300 times over.

Agree completely. It's the 'shallow DOF' of 2015.

However, when I'm up a hill in Wales filming a Lamborghini sometimes I want a 150fps slomo passby to make it all worthwhile.

You can always use slow-motion for something. And clients love it - every one.

I would never buy another camera again without HFR.

I guess a lot of people aren't shooting dialogue.

There's is place for it but not on every job. It is an effect and like all effects comes with a use by date, we haven't reached it yet but it is coming. From a client perspective I can see why it is popular with some , others , they will just look at you and see you as part of the herd. All depends on your client base.

You don't have to use slomo on the dialogue bits. ;)

I can't remember the last shoot I did where a client didn't want a bit..

I shoot a lot of action sports and we shoot most of it in HFR, but speed up most of it to normal speed as otherwise it just gets boring. But it's sometimes hard to know what trick will be best in slow mo, or you don't even know what trick they will pull, so then it's handy to have the possibility to chose in the edit

I thought outside of the opening scene that Spectre was by far the weakest one with Craig. Skyfall was damn near a masterpiece for a Bond film, Spectre fell flat for me.

As a bloke who shoots primarily narrative, I love off-speed recording and use it all the time. But I rarely ever tap into high frame rates, the times I actually want to go slower than 2x slowmotion (50fps) are exceedingly rare in narrative work - however I use things like 22 fps, 32 fps and 36 fps all the time to add excitement or emphasis to a shot.

I just got to see a rough edit of some 240fps material I shot on the F5 for a 'floating through space' sequence in a film, and it came out really nicely. I made the decision to shoot it all in 2k raw in crop mode so that there wouldn't be any artifacting, and the result is super nice and clean (as the footage was actors shot against black, to be comped into the 'space' environment in post, I also filmed it with the camera mounted at 90 degrees, so that I still got 4k's worth of resolution in the wide shots).

I think from this point forward I won't bother shooting any HFR work on the camera in full-frame mode (if I can avoid it). The risk of artifacting is too high, and the quality of the crop mode HFR is too nice to risk a lesser result with the larger format.

Solace was the weakest of the 4 for me. The ending was terrible, a revenge film without revenge and where was the solace? It was the biggest let down in cinema history for me.

I was expecting Spectre to be awful from seeing the 2nd trailer, but I enjoyed it more than Skyfall. What set Skyfall apart from all the other films was the ending, the Straw Dogs siege is Scotland. I enjoyed Spectre and I'm going to watch it again next week. It has faults and it doesn't follow the storyline that I would have liked, but it has some great moments and I just love watching Bond kicking the **** out of people. The problem with the Mendes films for me is all the homage's to the 60's films which comes across as being really cheesy. Casino Royale along with OHMSS are the two that I like the most and I don't think we will get another Bond film like these for another few decades.

Short promo shot on Raven by Red's sales team. Not sure about you chaps but I'm happy with that for a camera that will cost me less than my FS7 rig did.

What about the cost of the accessories for the Raven? I was under the impression it should at least double the price. Base package is $10K + at least another $2K for an additional mini mag, etc. Not speaking about rigging the camera, just talking about the obligatgory RED accessories to make the brain function...

I don't know but all these test are the same coming from RED. Get an attractive model who is covered in make-up and create some amazing lighting. Wouldn't any of these new S35mm cameras look just as good with the same set up? It sure looks Hollywood but I'll wait for some real world tests shot with real people by the targeted buyer. :)
