Please Jim, add the flip screen back on the left side. For us run and gun crowd, we'd much rather flip a screen open than take it out and mount it every time we pull the camera out of our backpack and put it on our tripod.

I believe that left side is where the RAW port is plugged in and can be removed and replaced with RED RAM. Since run and gunners are not likely to shoot raw, and those shooting raw would likely want the LCD mounted elsewhere, why not have it so you remove the RAW port and replace it with a fold out LCD? Sure it becomes a complicated mechanical mount, but it fits with Red's modularity mantra perfectly.

Since I will primarily be shooting feature style I am fine with the "mount anywhere" model but I am sympathetic to the need for setup speed for the ENG crowd.

Love the new renders. Can't wait to have it in my hands!

An interesting concept Thom!

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”

The modularity and flexibility of RED One is realized and maximized by users who regularly shoot in both cine-style and EFP style. The quicker the setup for either style, the better, including LCD and EVF setup options. With hard points all over the camera (and Cage One if used) there will be no scarcity of mounting options, but easy change-out locations of the LCD and EVF (and connectors) for shooting style changes will be a very appreciated bonus for crossover users who regularly shoot in multiple styles, and thus lens/accessory setups - many times involving multiple configuration changes within the same day. That said, its a small, modular camera, and there is obviously limited real estate to engineer configuration options. When you gain something, you usually give something up. I'm sure RED is aware of the broad cross-section of genres that can be enabled by RED One, and will to the best extent possible accommodate the needs of users. As stated many times, RED One is a digital cinema camera that can also be re-lensed/accessorized for effective EFP (and some ENG-style) use. As such, those who shoot both styles are very interested in speed and efficiency when re-configuring RED for multiple projects and genres of production. No camera system can be perfect for all configurations and uses, but planning the ergonomics/change-out possibilities in advance will go a long way toward broadening uses of the camera. RED has done a great job of listening to us to this point! They have incorporated many suggestions that made sense, and I’m sure they’ll continue to do so - within the time constraints they are under to bring the camera to market. At some point (soon!) they will obviously need to finalize the camera specs and begin the actual camera manufacturing process.

Will there be a "Flip" option for those who want to shoot upside down, which should be no problem since the red rail/cage looks like it would easily allow accessories to mounted on the top rail. And the LCD/EVF can be mounted anywhere you like.

Well speaking on the behalf of the steadicam operators, one cool addition would be to include a cheap SMD tilt sensor, like you find in every DSLR.
Just flip the camera upside down and the sensor tags the recording as either Normal or flipped. Then REDCINE could easily read the tag and flip accordingly. No user intervention needed. Also cool if you want the lens as low as possible, like when you use the P+S skater. You could just flip the camera without messing with the menus.
Should be possible to flip the HD-SDI monitoring output at the same time, by reversing the readout from the image buffer. Would save a lot of head/monitor turning...

Nice to see the smoother appearance of this latest render.

Please keep in mind that we are in this 11 months from scratch with just a few to go. What are great ideas can add months (or years for some other companies) to develop and execute. Getting a 4k image that rocks for a price point under $20k is a miracle. Please make sure that you keep this in mind when posting about additional features. Our camera is upgradeable. Many things will be added as we go forward. But the release camera will be as simple and modular as possible so we can meet our schedule.

when will the grenade launcher be available?

jk but seriously... whats the eta on the evf and whats the estimated price range on that?

Seriously, no problem. Just came from a shoot where we flipped constantly, so it was something that I'd like to be present on all cameras :-)

And btv. are you planning to include a few custom function buttons on the body?
Would it be possible to assign a flip function to a button on the body?

We plan on delivering as many capabilities as possible... just not all of them at the release. I think it is fair to expect a lot of software and firmware upgrades for awhile.

The EVF will be ready when the camera ships. Price is not announced, but nothing we sell will be deemed "expensive" in comparison to other market products. Quite the contrary.

Jim

Keep it this way. Outstanding performance with state of the art exterior desings, is a dream came true.

If the final camera is going to look as cool as this, i see no reason why the body should not be in the Tate Gallery of London.

NO. :0

I personally don't want any of the $17500 to go towards a LCD monitor. A cheap simple one wouldn't be any help to me as far as resolution and color accuracy goes, and a high quality one would cost too much money when the money could instead go towards other things on the camera.

I will be using an external LCD. It may take longer to setup, but this isn't really meant to be a run-n-gun camera anyways. After all, everyone who's owned a Canon XL camera has managed to deal with the removable eyepiece and no LCD; we'll be just fine.

A 720p LCD is already included as standard equipment in the $17,500 RED One price (for reservationists). It is flex-mounted, in other words you can mount it wherever you like. Greg was asking for it to be hard-mounted somewhere on the body and be able to flip out, then to be detachable and re-attachable whenever desired. Jim has confirmed that RED will stay with the flex-mount concept. We're already very fortunate to have a 720p LCD and focus assist standard with the camera.

The EVF is an optional add-on.

Eyes on the prize

Eyes on the prize

For run-n-gun just use the EVF. If you want to just pull it out of the backback quick and fire, and must have the LCD, then figure out a way to use one of the hard mounting points and a swivel mount to affix it where you can essentially create your own flip out solution.

I join the chorus saying the matte charcoal grey finish is fabulous and that the priority Jim has set for getting the camera out sooner rather than including every feature under the sun makes sense.

Keep in mind that once the RedOne is out that the 3rd party accessory biz will have an actual physical camera for to engineer for. I believe that no matter how talented the Red Team might be that our feature wish lists will get attended to faster by the dozens of folks already chomping at the bit to expand the functionality of the camera.

My shout out to the Red Team would be make it bulletproof. To me its about build quality, reliability, intuitive menus, actual physical controls for the parameters you adjust regularly, etc. As Stuart has pointed out, the RedOne for all its sophistication should be simpler to operate than many of the video cameras currently in wide use.

Well said Blair...

Contact me via PM or email. With me getting RED #008 and you getting RED #019 we should get our cameras around the same time. You're just down the coast from me a few hours (San Diego - where I used to be based), and your core production genres and concepts seem to parallel mine closely. We can network and collaborate. There's also another San Diego RED reservationist on DVX User that I'm already collaborating with (Tonicidal).

Cheers!
