RED NAB NEWS THREAD: Scarlet pics are up

I thought so as well. That's pretty sick.

I think I'm with Luis, gotta stop lookin' at this thing for a year or I'll go crazy. LoL

HPX170 is more realistic as it is, I'm gonna go hang out with those guys. ... Well, Maybe.

How do we get on the waiting list for the 170? Where do I submit my deposit? Oh, wait... Panasonic will actually have this product avaialble in the fall through its vast network of authorized dealers.

First in the door with some green takes the actual product back to the shop with them.

Lmfao!!! Nice one, Erik!

I'm not a RED basher. Far from it, truly. Jim is doing amazing stuff, and what RED does will help redefine the industry. Perhaps not in the way that first springs to mind, but they will certainly catalyze things in good ways.

That said, I do have a slight problem with someone telling me my $25 - $50k camera is an "alpha" or "beta" product and that I shouldn't plan on using it for paying work. In my experience, beta-testers don't usually pay for the privilege to be guinea pigs.

Seriously a 3k cinema cam for a few hundred bucks more then the DVX? That is insane, however like many others have said. We will see what happens in a year when it is actually released.

Couldn't agree with you more on all points, Erik.

ANYTHING in this price class is unbelievable; to get a super-high-res solid 1080P or 2K out of it is stunning, to get a 2/3" chip is beyond awesome. I haven't dug into the reduser reactions yet, but anyone complaining in any way about the Scarlet is completely off base. What they're promising, for $3,000, is just insanely over the top.

Could it have been better? of course. Interchangeable lens would be nice, etc. But it's just like people being "disappointed" that the $5500-ish HPX170 isn't an EX3-killer... you have to factor in the price. People were expecting the Scarlet to be "below $10,000". It's $3,000! Come ON, people.

There I'll disagree 100%. hard disk is the lamest recording system on the planet. I'm much happier with the dual compactflash approach. I bought a red drive, and I'd use CF instead every single time unless I absolutely *had* to have larger capacity. Scarlet's not shipping for at least a year, and I'm sure we'll have 32GB cards by then. Two 32's should provide plenty of recording capacity with absolutely no hassle.

I cant agree more! I was waiting for something like this to happen and am going to buy a Scarlet. Now I am curious if the classic players ( pana-sony-jvc-canon) will somehow react to the Scarlet "menace" ;-)
I also doubt we will see the first scarlet delivered before summer of 2009 so there is still some time left for more nice surpises.
Scarlets price was definately a nice one .
red one users are going to buy crates of scarlets.

I don't actually think the big players will react much at all. I think the reason why is that Scarlet is still on paper, and Red hasn't yet shown to be able to mass produce and deliver product, as Erik points out.

I think it's more likely that the big players will continue down the same R&D and marketing paths they already have. It doesn't take a market expert to realize that the HVX200 HPX500, EX1, and Canon's (especially the A1) have been huge market successes. So until Scarlet actually gets here, not in beta, and is shipping, I see little or no change other than their current progression.

Actually,
Canon has taken notice of RED in one respect, their ability to implement their own HD codec. In this interview with Mike Zorich, Marketing Director of the Video Division of Consumer Imaging Group at Canon USA, Canon has specifically referenced RED's success as a template that they're interested in applying to their own brand.
This is pretty significant to me.

When we asked if Canon’s use of AVCHD in the consumer range would be a factor in its development of pro platforms, the responses became very interesting. Zorich confirmed that would be a factor, but did not go as far to say that Canon would definitely be pursuing the AVCHD path. He continued, “Red [Digital Cinema] created their own codec. No one took them seriously two years ago, and now they’re competing in the marketplace.”

I believe that once Scarlet is shipping, and tests can confirm it performs better than many of its competitor's cameras, the others will have to respond.
In many ways they already have responded. In fact, I still think the price drop of the HPX500 was a pre-emptive move based on "inside knowledge" of Scarlet, coupled with EX3 leaks, and Canon taking direct notes from RED's playbook, there's no doubt in my mind that RED is already influencing the other's decisions.

The HPX price drop as a response to a small form factor sub $3K camera that shoots raw video that won't be out for at least 12 to 18 months?
I seriously doubt that.

As a response to the EX-3 maybe...but not the Scarlet.

The Canon comments on the other hand I find interesting.
That's a company that has never before ventured to create their own codec.

Indeed.
It had to happen sometime.
When you think about it, they have everything else in place....now just give them their own video codec and as long as it doesn't trigger a lord of the flies moment among the video oligarchy, then Canon will be well on their way to establishing their well-deserved independence.
Maybe in their pursuit of a new video codec they'll discover a new identity that resembles the times when they propelled themselves over Nikon to the top of the DSLR world (arguable point at the moment, but valid in retrospect).

Red hasn't yet shown to be able to mass produce and deliver product, as Erik points out.

Red is now shipping reservation numbers up to 2000.
As a conservative estimate maybe 1/2 actually picked up their red (numbers are unknown). That's still 1000 Digital Cinema cameras shipped worldwide. That is HUGE in the pro market.

I personally know 2 owners of red one and was surprised when I found out they actually own them. One of them has 2 red one´s......
red is definately making a dent in the market! I have seen a similar thing happening in the music business when the computer and midi made their dent...

But MIDI wasn't exclusive to one company. One could arguable credit Dave Smith and Sequential Circuits, but MIDI was/is universal, it is more analogous to DV, or HD.

Red has delivered 1000 cameras, but that's not the same as mass producing cameras that are ready to sell on demand, the same way the DVX, HVX, Canon A1, etc have been made and sell.

The fact that they have at least 1000 units in the field after only hanging their shingle two years ago is still remarkable. At least by any established R&D-to-shelf standards.

That REDOne has only a portion of its promised functionality is a niggling detail that they should eventually remedy.

The F23 and Genesis have already permeated the market with good success - RED can't afford to rest on their ever-evolving laurels. They'll be held to the highest standard once they move out of the shadow of the tinkering-geek-in-the-garage setting and start doing feature-length A-Camera work on studio features.

There is a riot-list of RED projects on IMDBPro... I wonder how it is going? Slowly methinks. J/K!!!

Mike Zorich's comments are quite interesting. (very nice guy, btw)

I think the evolution of Canon's professional video products will be following the D-SLR path of the company. It only makes sense--raw workflow is the future and at some point I think that may be an option with Canon camcorders. To me, the big achilles heel of their products is the HDV format. It's worked ok, but it's limitations are well known and discerning customers know that HD video really should be much less compressed to perform at its best. I've personally had to go to great lengths in post to deal with the formats limitations, and I believe its simply time to move on to better stuff.

Interlace doesn't make sense anymore. Heavy compression doesn't make sense now that solid state recording is much more viable in terms of sustained bit rates.

Looking at the introduction of Sony's EX-3, along with the other sub $10K interchangable lens 1/3" Sony HDV cam makes me think that there will be more unusual turf wars happening. Sony is going after the H1's niche so why shouldn't Canon respond with something at least in the 1/2" arena?

I think next NAB is going to be much more interesting than this year's.

here's what I found on camcorderinfo.com :

Today at NAB, Red Digital Cinema showcased the long-awaited Scarlet, a compact model capable of shooting 3K video for under $3,000.
$3,000 for the Scarlet? Is that before or after they charge you $2,950 for a viewfinder and $1,500 for the batteries + charger?
