Yeah me too. I still really don't understand. where they're going w/ that. It looks like a toy or something, ya' know, not very professional looking.

Of course you have a peace of fashion here. But still looks kind of through-thought. Develop it a little furhter, here have been some nice ideas on the forum and this will be a nice piece. Of course you cannot drop 100 years of camera development. They are there because they are proven.
But if you think cameras necessarily have to look like an ARRI, thats a very cubistic, conservative design. (Though I have to admit, I like the ARRI design too!)

If you want to be different from the market, you have to be different.
And Jim Jannard does/promote/hires outstanding design.

Well, that's the real question. I'm sure the Viper, Dalsa, and Arri D20 all provide stunning imagery, but their cost is simply prohibitive. Might as well shoot on 35mm film to begin with.

I think what'll make this a winner will be an extremely lowball price. Say $15,000 or so. They're gonna throw this camera into the ring with the HVX, XL-H1, HD100 and Z1, and blow them all to smithereens (sp?).
Is this really true or is it speculation .
aIf true it is great news .!!!

I could care less what anyone thinks of the look of the unit itself. People thought the same thing of the DVX when I brought it on set. The imagery this camera will produce (according to specs) should close the mouths, or drop jaws as it were. How pretty it is should be last on the list. It could look like a giant whitehead pimple if I can shoot affordable 4K.

I was hoping that you might tell us the physical and interface target specs as well:

1) What will the weight be in typical configurations (will effect the kind of steady-cam required)

2) Tripod mounting plates or screwholes. Perhaps you could tell us what tripod standards and tripods you are targeting.

3) What external connectors for video out, mics in, power in.

4) How will white balance, sensitivity, gamma, and other parameters of the camera be set or programmed?

5) Will there be PC and Mac software that will facilitate the dump of video from whatever the storage is to which software? For example, the GR-HD1 came with software to dump into Sony Vegas.

-Thanks
Tom

I want a PAL version. Hope they get around to that pronto.

You mean SD ?
They do provide 50Hz so making a downscale should be the least problem.
Or is about something else ?

But I must admit that a downscaler in the output could be nice. I don't remember, is it planned ?

They are seriously hyping this thing. I hear a marketing machine at work. Not a working camera.

I'm in the marketing business. I know that when we hype something up like RED. That means we can't deliver and we're selling hope, not product. Products that can deliver don't need hype.

Given the nature of my business. I'll beleive it when I see it.

So far, all I have seen is seen is hot air and CAD rederings. If it's real, it's nowhere near production. If you're still releasing CAD renderings, you're still in the R&D stage.

Of course they are marketing it first - they are a new company and cannot rely on previous efforts to sell the camera. They admit they are in development. But given the backing of Jim Jannard et al I felt confident enough to fork over my $1000 because the industry has a huge gap in the market and it is just waiting for something like Red to fill it. Bear in mind that Red is not the only new camera being developed - Silicon Imaging are doing something similar for example, though not at that price range.

What a bunch of BS. Products that can deliver still need hype. If it's a viable product, but kept in a basement nobody is going to know about it, therefore, some type of hype or marketing needs to take place.

If RED does deliver once it's complete, it will then not really need hype, but rather a standard marketing path and word will spread. Until then a little hype never hurts, because nobody's getting hurt by the hype.
