Recording in HDV, capturing on non-HDV camera

I'm heavily considering buying an A1 instead of going with the DVX100B, but I'd like to know how well HDV footage edits on my computer. A Frys near me happens to have the A1 out for demonstration and I was wondering if it was possible to record 1080/60i HDV footage to my own tape and then bring it back home and capture it with my old Sony MiniDV camera to Premiere Pro. I know I won't be able to use 30f/24f frame rates unless I had a Canon camera, but I would think 60i is standard enough that my old camera could be used with Premiere and capture it.

Anyone know if this will work?

Thanks for the quick response. It's not a deal-breaker if I can't test out HDV editing beforehand, but it would have been nice :)

ya, get a sepearte camera, it would be a waste to invest in a deck as within the next 2 or 3 years tape will be replaced by direct to drive data. P2, firestore, etc....

I think he is not talking about separate decks, he justs wants to try out editing some HDV footage before making the decision to buy the a1. But of course it is not possible to capture HDV from an SD cam.

So, what would happen if you put a MiniDV tape recorded on an A1 in HD, into, say, an SD Sony handycam to dump onto your computer? Would you get any kind of output? Nothing? Garbled junk?

It would be an un-readable signal to the deck .. it couldn't even track properly. no timecode, no nothing.

i tried it once, and got a message from The aliens that have been haunting me.

naaa, tried it and nothing happened. wont work at all.

The XH-A1 works fine with FCP on my MBpro. If you have one you can just bring the computer to the store and capture there. What you will find is that 1080i60 takes up a LOT of space.
