Re: 1DX Mark II - First Impressions?

I have 1Dc and generally just batch convert the footage with an older Cheese grater MacPro and Mpeg Streamclip. I made a couple presets for 4K and 2K down convert. It's really easy to set up batch and I just walk away from it. It's not fast, but I generally don't need an immediate turn around. If I need it faster and have more content... I'll use my a 2nd computer at night to process, but I have had a few 48hr renders on my cheese grater. I think it took 36 hours to convert 2hrs and 40 minutes of 4K to 2K ProRes 422 HQ recently on the old quad 2.6 cheese grater. I generally only shoot B-Roll in 4K with my 1Dc so it's more like 30-40mins being converted over night.

A little suggestion. It is actually far easier and FAR faster to batch convert in Davinci Resolve. Almost 6x faster in fact. No color correction needed. Drop the files in and go to Output. Very stable too.

Wouldn't it be easier to handle it in the media management panel?

This is not a camera for us. Dual pixel autofocus and 4K60fps is great but rest is a pain. We're just around NAB corner, I think it's worth the wait.

The specs show for 4K @ 60p it is recording 4GB of data per 39 seconds of footage!!!

WOW. So, after storage, batteries and rigging, this thing will end up at around the same price of a similarly-equipped FS7. Without log and with at least three stops less DR (if it doesn't have any DR improvements with respect to the 5D3 in video mode).

I see this camera more as just a good sign that the 5DmkIV will have 4K at up to 30p.
That is a necessity. I cannot imagine them releasing their flagship camera without 4K (I call 1dx a specialist camera). That would be a major shoot in the foot. Unless they will save that for a video version of 5DIV.

Is this honestly worth it for $6,000? A true cinema camera can be purchased for that amount that has better ergonomics, control and actually records a high color depth with RAW. Plus many cinema cameras like the Ursa use EF lenses so if you are an EF lens owner paying $6,000 for this camera seems a bit excessive for still being hampered in terms of post workflow.

For pure video work, probably not an item one might purchase. But I wonder if its de facto mass production will mean very affordable rental prices. One thing that Norway video showed was its ability to be used on a stabilizer with an AF (although, they probably used the best AF take, where there wasn't much hunting) for someone with EF lenses.

The counter to this will be, presumably, new fast Sony zooms, which will allow for the superior stills and video performance from a much less expensive A7RII/SII series.

I think we can agree that buying this camera purely for video work would be a bad idea considering the other option available. The only thing this camera really has going for it that makes it worth consideration for certain uses is that it is relatively indestructible.

It looks like the camera is stuck with the 30min max recording time. That's really unfortunate and another knock against it compared to the 1DC.

Any word if the 1dx mkII has a auto black balance or APR function like the c100-c500 & sony fs7/f55? Ive been using the 1DC for 2 years now and have sent it in for sensor remapping for 4-5 times since to get rid of stuck/dead pixels.

In one of the videos they said that the 30 mins recording time has been lifted and it will keep recording based on how big the cfast card is. He said that there are bigger cards available now.. Someone correct me if I am wrong, buts thas what I got from the video.

Ok, I'm probably mistaken as I was reading the information second hand.

The specs on BH site states 29 mins recording limit.

Watch the 2 videos, you will see them mention the recording limit is based on how big your card is, the 29 min has been lifted. I could be wrong but I am almost positive that it has been lifted.

I'll take a look. Which videos are you referring to? I can't seem to find link in this thread. Thanks.
