raylight vs. shotput

hi all,

i'm new at p2 editing and am trying to do as much research as possible.

i've been reading about shotput and raylight and want to confirm that they are used for the same purpose.

if so, can you explain any major differences between the two?
and also, which do you recommend?

thanks a lot for any advice.

Two different tools.

Raylight makes QT proxies of your mxf media so that your NLE can work with it.

Shotput is a P2 off loader with verification.

thanks matt for the info...that clarifies things.

so, for best performance and reliability, one would use shotput to offload onto mac, then use raylight or 'calibrated' to use mxf files in fcp?

i'm trying to keep costs down...but do you think it's worth it to get both?

thanks again.

There's a few people who advocate drag 'n drop, and I would lie if I said I haven't done that in the past.

But when I'm shooting on the client's dime, which is most of the time, then verification and automation is a VERY GOOD thing.

I have Raylight and it work VERY well. In fact, they provided a copy I gave away at my NAB2008 presentation on P2 workflow.

I use it for my production company and it works very well.

That being said I've heard VERY ood things abut Calibrated's mxf solution.

There isn't a "need" for either of those apps, although they do provide alternative workflows.

You can offload p2 cards to your desktop and import them into FCP which converts them to a QT container.

That's the way many of us worked for a couple of years before either app was available.

I'm a fan of semi automated workflow assists and use Shot put Pro all the time. Nothing wrong with Dragging & dropping in the finder, but an app like SP PRo gives you a number of time saving options and really makes the offloading process sooo much better. Using a P2 gear or PCD20 as a card reader? SP Pro will offload all mounted cards simultaneously, auto name new folders as needed and give you a positive verification of complete file transfer.
