Raw Video

Whoa there, cowboy.

Don't care about Filesize? Imagine an uncompressed frame is 48mb... that's PER frame. RED's more compressed than that, so yeah, file size is important. Conversion process takes time, time equals money.

And, "bad" depth isn't fact, it's preference. Most of Slumdog was helmed on a 2/3" format. There's nothing wrong with it. If you don't have anything to shoot that's good, wont' really matter.

Otherwise, I can see where you're coming from. The closest I think we'll get in the next three years, however, is an S35 scarlet, and that sucker'll set you back 15K at the least, I believe.

Wee~
RAW stills from a 5D II are 25-30MB. Where did you get 48?

I just wanna put it out there that getting a raw feed from the sensor would be a massive undertaking and I am willing to bet that canon has looked into it since the release of the 5d mk ii in 2008 and I bet that they have found it largely impractical and not worth dedicating the significant resources required to create it. You have to remember that canon is a stills company first and video second, they still make the majority of their money from stills so that is where they are going to see the return on investment the quickest.

As some of you have already mentioned one of the the biggest issues is the file that the raw is encapsulated in. There has to be a massive amount of code written to make this possible. Also you need to take into account the fact that all of the red have much smaller sensors than out 7ds and with these larger sensor comes a gigantic number of issues that Red never went on to solve. I echo the sentiment that it would be great to have a raw for the canon slrs but I think what you are asking for is highly impractical.

Not talking about Mkii, talking about uncompressed footage from Genesis. I believe it comes in at about 48Mb a frame.

Not sure about Canon/Nikon, but is "raw" even Uncompressed? Or is it too slightly compressed?

Someone has to draw the line with the "bigger is better" in terms of sensor size. That will just mean more $$ needed to invest in glass. I agree with James Cameron...I'd rather have a good 2 or 3K (RAW or maybe sRaw) image @ a higher framerate (in this case 48fps) Than a 4K (and above) @24p. You'll get the same detail in the image but now you have the best of both worlds (meaning slow motion and standard 24p when you want...better keying ability...less skew.....etc....etc.).

I always had the same question about "andromemizing" the 7D. That would keep me from buying a new camera for many years.

agreed if the 7D shot a RAW sRAW format I wouldn't need another cam for years... it would be exactly what I have been looking for.

but bigger sensor size doesn't necessarily mean more resolution. i agree that 2k is plenty for everything i do, but i do want a big sensor to do it. i want the FOV and DOF that a big chip allows. nothing bigger than aps-c or ff 35 but no smaller....

agreed I have no need for anything larger than FF35 or even APS-C... but I dont want the FOV or DOF of 2/3 hence the reason I dont want the 2/3 scarlet among many other things( the $950 a piece, can only be used for that cam, lenses is another)... the only reason I even consider it is because of the RAW colorspace... also the ability to shoot steady and shake in post... but id the 7D could some day shoot in any size raw it would be a dream come true...

The 7D will never shoot RAW video because the sensor can't be run full resolution at 24fps, it can only do 8fps full res for short bursts. Even sRaw requires the sensor to be read out full res and then scaled from there.

well aren't you the optimist

i'm with you there. the 2/3" scarlet doesn't appeal to me at all. maybe the fixed lens for some applications but definitely not the detachable one. i'll wait for the s35 scarlet or epic...

i would bet my life that we won't see 5k raw from the 7d ever. maybe one day spitting out raw at full res and at 24fps (or higher) out of a little dslr won't be any big deal but for now, it's not going to happen. when it does, it will be due to new hardware. won't just be a firmware update.

FIRMWARE!... FIRMWARE!... FIRMWARE!... yeah I know it wont happen just yet but we can keep wishing... perhaps like I had said it could be possible if it was done by an outside modder. I also will be watching the S35 but at $7k for just a body that doesn't do anything... then I need a $2k touchscreen monitor, then some form of storage be it a CF reader at $500 the RED's special CF cards at $550 a piece(they have said other cards will not work) or a RED drive at $900... then a battery system... and remote... yatta, yatta... then I am looking at a $15k cam that doesn't even shoot as good of photos as my 7D? WTF hell no... hopefully by then then Canon a company I have trusted and own products from my who life will answer our prayers... I just wish the would break away from H.264... its just so compressed. Don't read me wrong I love my 7D with heart and soul... in superflat it is an "epic" camera... and it answers all needs that I have... will I go RED, short answer is no. will I sell my 7D for the next camera that Canon makes, sure why not I always have... Go Canon answer our Prayers and knock RED on their ass's
