I just finished shooting a string of photos on my 7D in Raw format... I was very surprised to say the least... WHAT A MONSTER... I was most impressed by the amount of detail there was in my blacks... the dynamic range was amazing... Normally when we all shoot footage we are all striving for more range and to preserve detail in the darker side of the spectrum. But shooting raw photos I was amazed that I had to much detail at the far end... I for once had to personally crush my blacks in post (Camera Raw) also the ability to post a perfect white balance the edit my range was fantastic... I guess what I am saying is amidst the arrival of the scarlet/epic... Do you think canon will ever make this cam shoot raw video... Because if they did it would be an amazing camera(not that it isnt already) they would really give RED a run for the money. Not to mention the ability to grade in a raw color space... I think even if it's possible Canon wouldn't put this into play until the Scarlet is actually shipping. The Red team has already modified their plans for the Scarlet based on what Canon has done with their SLRs, and this is too big of a thing to throw out unnecessarily until real competition becomes a reality and not just an overhyped possibility.
 
raw is the holy grail

as a stills shooter im so used to sorting out my white balance in post, teaking the exposure with no quality loss

for video where you need to cut between shots it is even more important

I find it nuts that even the $140K Sony F35 dont have raw

The trouble is with no compression you get a monster data rate and need something that can read and store all that information a massive technical hurdle

(a sense of scale on the data rate the F35 is 880MBS)

Reds big thing is their way of compressing the RAW data

Red are in the 3k raw market

To me Id like to see a 1080 or even 720 RAW camera - there is some hope that could be cheap

720 raw would eat 1080 canon h264 for breakfast

For personal stuff? As I live in lebanon, I'm ok with 960x540 raw. We live in SD land still.

720p raw over 1080 h264 in a heartbeat. I'd go for it in a heartbeat.
 
I dont particularly mean that I would want the 5K raw that the 7D sensor produces( though that would be a dream come true) but yes 1080p raw would be fantastic, I would never need another camera... and can anyone say corner the market... CANON please, listen to our prayers... stop using H.264
 
wouldn't RAW video mean full resolution as well? I don't think the Canon's processors could handle this. I'm just using the RED as an example. Shooting RAW means using the full resolution of the chip with no scaling. Otherwise, they would have implemented the scaled 2k mode they proposed from the beginning. Instead, to shoot 2k, you only use part of the sensor. I'm not a technical expert but logic tells me that scaling the 4k chip down to 2k RAW in camera would take more processing power that the RED is capable of. So if the giant computer that is the RED can't do it, I wouldn't expect that the 5d or 7d could. As far as full 5k raw from the 7d, that sounds like a dream but I would be amazed if it came true.
 
There's been a rumor about a Nikon NEF Video implementation, but that was months ago.

If it happens, I'm pretty sure you're gonna have to pay for it, and it won't be cheap. Might as well get a Scarlet at that point, a real digital cinema camera.

Pretty much. Raw means exactly that. It's easier to deliver 4 o 5K raw than it is 1080
 
Can't wait for that Nikon alternative. Of course, unless canon gives us some kind of Sraw stills @ 24fps option with the 7D ;)

I could maybe even be convinced to buy that WFT-E5A with ethernet port so I can record to a laptop HINT HINT canon.

An Ethernet mod would be THE balls all for DSLRs, piping hot 5K to a Laptop drive!?!?!?

I've tried to contact Juan on Facebook, no response. But, man, if someone actually hardmodded a GH-1, 7D or 5D???? End Game.
 
I dont care what size the file is I just want RAW Colorspace... I dont want a scarlet for the fact that is a 2/3 sensor which means shi*ty depth. I love my 7D and its interface... plus I already have FF lenses so if I buy the scarlet which is a 4.25x crop sensor(WTF) then all of my very usable with the 7D lenses now become super telephotos. my favorite lense 50mm ziess in now a 212.5mm. and that is a pointlesss lens especially since it has no IS.

I love Nikon, I hate that I had to switch because Nikon wouldn't jump on the bandwagon and give a decent attempt at 1080. I seriously doubt they'll come out with RAW video before Canon. Canon's been at the video game for a while, if they don't do it, it'll be sony or panny before Nikon no doubt.


I'm always willing to be proven wrong, and hope that I am, because I want it soon :-p I just realistically don't see Nikon doing it.

Whoa there, cowboy.

Don't care about Filesize? Imagine an uncompressed frame is 48mb... that's PER frame. RED's more compressed than that, so yeah, file size is important. Conversion process takes time, time equals money.

And, "bad" depth isn't fact, it's preference. Most of Slumdog was helmed on a 2/3" format. There's nothing wrong with it. If you don't have anything to shoot that's good, wont' really matter.

Otherwise, I can see where you're coming from. The closest I think we'll get in the next three years, however, is an S35 scarlet, and that sucker'll set you back 15K at the least, I believe.

I dont want to reinvest in lenses... especially at 950 a piece. And if I do but those mini primes I cant use them for anything else. I wasn't stating 2/3 shi*ty DOF as a fact I was stating it as an opinion sorry if that offended you... and I do have good stuff to shoot... that was quite rude. I dont think I have said anything to warrant you telling anything I shoot is garbage..... Any ways bvack on subject I would like to see an upgrade for raw it would be a dream come true... perhaps this is something that could be done by an outside designer like magic lantern.

The "Don't have anything good to shoot" comment is a generalization. Wasn't meant as "Perry Wilson doesn't have anything good to shoot." Similar to how your statement of "bad DOF" wasn't meant to be taken as a fact, sometimes things come off different on the internet. I don't think I've ever seen anything you've shot? Didn't print the word "garbage", either. Huhm.

Lenses, 5K or 1080p, agreed. Doesn't really matter to me, either.

lol sorry sometimes forums are a fail and their is a major breakdown in communications... lol seeing as how there is no sense of pronunciation in writing things can be interpreted wrong... sorry and Yes GO TEAM... lol I would like to find some programmer who could make this happen he would be a millionaire... and the 7D will destroy all.
