Hi guys,
im starting a new movie soon, shot on a dvx100b, about a kid who gets sucked into his playstation one and lives the world of final fantasy. its going to be a live action comedy, but i need to know how to do the battle menus in the game, like this...

and also, have it be easily animateable as the damage and limit counters fill up and stuff...

anyone have an easy way to do this?
thanks in advance.

I myself would do it all in After Effects....AE + plus a lynda.com account...watch as much as possible and soak it all in. The easy route? find a friend who knows AE.

I suppose also you could go low-core and just make images in photoshop or something similar and just put them over the top of your video...no animaton, just switch pictures with changes.

Hey Nick. This After Effects programme I've heard so much about, does it work with Sony Vegas? How does it work with Sony Vegas Pro 9?

Can I download it?

well what i ended up doing was taking the menus from the game, and blanking all the "animateable stuff" out such as text and ATB bars and what not. I put the image over the video in premiere pro, and then used text screens to move the cursor around and change the damage. the only thing i cant figure out this way is how to make the atb bar fill up. everything else looks spot on. and i have after effects im just DREADING learning it, it looks so confusing.

here is a link to what i have so far... i just need to make the bars move and itll be perfect. and maybe use a different font. but other then that everything else is modeled to be able to move. and the sound effects are in too.

AE isn't as difficult as you think...It can be, but it all depends on how fancy you want to get.

Once I got into it a few years back one major thing came to mind : This is just Photoshop, with timed effects.

I'm fairly new to AE, but I've used flash since V2; I use it often for quick titles, etc - since it's second nature to me. You may find there are way more people able to do something simple like this in Flash, simply because it's been around forever and is a common web development tool.

I did an entire animated section of a movie in Flash, and integrated the in & out of the animated section into video. From Flash, instead of rendering out an SWF file, I did PNG sequences with alpha channels. Worked great.

(Not quite what you're looking for, but conceptually the same, 80% of this video came from flash - here's a link:)

AE isn't really primarily one thing...except perhaps it could be called an "animation" program. It's just basically photoshop, but it can do it's magic to multiple images through time(video)....is that too simplified an explanation?

I use AE alot for color correction. It can also do image manipulation, titles, tons of funky effects, 2D and 3D animation.

After Effects

AE isn't so bad. When I first opened it, I was a little intimidated because I had only used Photoshop. Once I got it in and started playing around, I realized that it is a lot like photoshop, only you can animate things and make some really cool effects.

There are tons of tutorials on the net ranging from basic tasks to the more advanced stuff. Video Copilot.net has some pretty good/easy to follow tutorials for AE. I spent 9 hours going through a good number of them one day and I learned a ton about the program. Maybe you could start there to keep from feeling like this :badputer: when you first start using the program.

After Effects is SO MUCH MORE than "just basically photoshop"

I work with it full time for my day job, the software has many, many capabilities. If you can, check out videocopilot.net that will be a great start to unlocking some of the goodies it can offer you and your films.

Good luck!

Then I suppose I did over simplify...I'm sorry. I just wanted to communicate the fact that AE wasn't something to be scared of and can be used by many levels of users, from the most basic user wanting simple titles, effects, and Color Correction...to those doing advanced work as I suppose you yourself are doing...I meant no slight.

So would i use After Effects for explosions, gun shot sounds, adding scenery etc? I see alot of light saber videos on youtube were done using after effects.

I'm going to film 2 guys having a shoot out somewhere dressed in military clothing as i really want to play about with some special FX and have a bit of fun before i make something serious.

Ok thanks dude. I've NEVER used photoshop so I'll be a right retard when I first use it. You must of had a real sore arse sitting there for that long. LOL. My neck was killing me after watching Avatar. I had a proper dead arse after watching the first LOTR at the cinema. Good times.

For the visual stuff, yes AE can do them...as for sound effects, you'll have to look to the inet mostly, or create your own effects.

On gun fire though I've seen a simple image of a gun flash overlaid on a gun for a frame, and it looked pretty good.
