Quality Parenting

several years ago i volunteered at a school for children with severe emotional and behavior disorders. one day this kid's mother shows up acting hysterical. she comes up to the boy and keeps asking, "where's it at? where's it at? where's the bag?" it turns out her 10 year old son had stolen her bag of weed and brought it to school with him. she got even more upset when school administrators confiscated the weed instead of giving it back to her. apparently she was more concerned with her not being able to smoke it than she was him bringing it to school.

parenting at its finest. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

He's 18 months so he's allowed to be totally cheesy. At least he's stopped looking for me BEHIND the laptop screen.

I've become amazed lately, that my 3.5 year old is using the wife's netbook with regularity. playing games, knowing where to go on a pre-chosen site to find the games and activities she likes most, and browsing the kids section of instant watch on netflix.

And, her patience and attention to detail (relatively speaking... she is 3.5 after all :) ) when coloring pictures.

Good thing that you took some time to go coloring with her then.

i hope none of you thought my post was serious.

my 4 year old daughter watches "iCarly" religously, and she saw "Jurrasic Park" for the first time earlier today...she likes.

she's also on vimeo. (shameless plug)

My first grandchild will be here in several weeks ( a little girl, thank you very much) I am really getting excited to hang out with a baby again. I can do all things right that I screwed up on before, and really do all the cool rotten things I should've done the first time! This post is now making me weepy....cool.

My brother was a teacher's assistant for an alternative school that was basically the last stop where all the county high schools shipped their trouble makers before they ended up in juvenile detention. Our running joke was that he was paid to beat up 14 y/o's because many of these kids routinely became violent and he would have to physically restrain them 'till the cops showed up... and he's a large individual. But he told me it was a lot of the same thing you described... family lives that were train wrecks if they existed at all, meth heads for parents, abuse, no supervision... it was really sad.

My daughter is hooked on 'Animal Crossing' for the Wii. It's actually a great game for her age, she just turned six.

Plenty of reading and writing. Not to mention collecting species of fish, insects and dinosaur fossils for the local museum. I would recommend it for any child around her age, even much older.

It's really cool right now because it keeps track of the day and time within the game so you get night/day transitions and seasonal changes. It just started snowing and she bought a Christmas tree for her house. :) I read up on it and pretty soon the ground will be covered in snow and she will be able to make a snowman that can come to life.

It also teaches you a bit about managing money and there is plenty of math. The thing is... it's all done in such a way that it doesn't seem like work. It's all fun. Yes, I even go fishing with her character when she isn't playing. :)

Earlier in the week I'm in line at the grocery store; a lady with her kid fumbles through her purse looking for money. She turns to me and asks if I mind "watching" her kid while she runs to the car to get money.

Now mind you I've never seen this woman before in my life and the kid is a toddler and the woman was, I suppose, late 20's or 30's.

I suppose I look non-threatening enough, but I told her "sorry, I don't know you, you don't know me and I don't feel comfortable watching your kid".

She actually got kind of pissy with me (loud sighs, eye rolling etc) but she got out of line and went outside and got her cash.

Was I wrong?
I mean the kid could have freaked out, she could have freaked out or worse never came back at all.

I think I did the responsible thing.

My 4 year old daughter was in the bath the other night and said to my wife "When I get bigger...I wanna marry Daddy."

i got a bit ferclempt when my wife told me that. I'm not always at my best as none of us are, and i screw stuff up, but when i heard that, it makes me think i'm doing a good job. made my day for sure.
