GH2 PTool with GH2 support released

As I've only ever owned a GH2 I never really followed the GH1 hacks. But I've always understood that they're amazing!

So, I hope this isn't asking too much, but would it be possible for someone to do a basic write-up for GH hack newbies like myself on just what exactly the hacks areand what they can do? I see all kinds of "how-to's" but no basic summary of what the different hacks are. Maybe I'm missing some posts?

I had the same question when I got my GH1 a week or two ago. There's no simple write-up, unfortunately, but this might help - it's not complete or detailed, but should enable to you to understand well enough to go to the next stage, which is to review the threads in the GH13 discussions, where all the detailed how-to's are

1. PTool is a an application (Windows only, but see later) which allows you to see and change settings in the GHx firmware file. You using by downloading Panasonic firmware, making your changes, then uploading the new fw to the camera. If you're a Mac user, you need to use Parallels/VMWare/Crossover/Winebottler or similar, or get access to a windows machine.

2. There are 2 general classes of change: operational and quality.

3. Operational changes: Use non-panasonic batteries; choose from any or all interfaces languages; in the European Union, remove the 30-minute limit of clip length

4. Quality changes: you can change the bit-rates at which the camera records. This is very hard to get your head around if you don't get into the serious details. However, lpowell to the rescue - he has created some presets for GH1, and is likely to do the same for GH2 (see comments in this thread) which allow people like me to get a handle on the hacking process. There are several presets for different purposes - look for threads started by lpowell - his descriptions and explanations couldn't be better.

Hope that gets you started

Thanks, you've answered my questions about this too.

So what do you call the hacked GH2? GH23? GH2 Stalin? :)

Well, now, that's a question. If you're only interested in the GH2 hack in one country, then Stalin is perhaps appropriate; but if you believe the hack can only be successful if it's adopted in all countries, then I suppose it'll be Trotsky :)

Great news!

I am wondering if settings for 720/60p that were stable with the GH1 will be stable with the GH2? Have a multicam wedding coming up and I want to be able to switch between slow motion and standard on GH2 as well as GH1. Have been avoiding 720/60p on GH2 because of the bitrate.

Time to order some faster cards!

You will enjoy this cam. And I look forward to your impressions. Don't be put of by the slight oversharpening out of the box, it takes great real world video.
