GH2 PTool v3.62D Released

I've said it before...what Vitaliy is doing equates to many man hours of "free" R&D for Panasonic. I understand that they are a large enough company to do it themselves but in this economy in order to save some money...why not go with the flow? Plus, they'll make money with all the added hype surrounding this camera....me thinks. :)

Not sure Panasonic are making money at all. They just hit a 52-week low, at the same time the GH2 is rapidly heading towards its 1 year anniversary since its release...funny coincidence no? "The company's weaknesses can be seen in multiple areas, such as its generally disappointing historical performance in the stock itself, poor profit margins and weak operating cash flow." This of course includes other departments in the company. The "hype" you speak about is a tiny, tiny, tiny sub-community. But just saying.

Canon on the other hand are doing well. Canon "hype" is based on big wigs in the industry endorsing the product. Stock is up.

GH2 seems so capable, but marketing is absolutely pathetic.

A day ago I took the hack off not really convinced that it was actually better. I was seeing too much macro blocking.

I downloaded the latest ptool and thought .... stuff it, let me go for 110 mbps AVCHD. What can I say. I am floored. The footage is INCREDIBLE!!! You guys have to try this. By the way - I am using the highly recommended Silicon power SDHC cards. They guarantee the throughput of over 20 MB/s.

I am still baffled that people are still thinking that Vitaliy and the hack has the blessing of Panasonic in any way. For the poster who said that Pany could just send a firmware update to block the hack, did he forget what Pany did to the latest batch of gh1 that had a new firmware that was not hackable (until very recently, at least 6 month after the discontinued gh1). If it was Nikon or Canon to a lesser extend I would have understood that they might not see it as a threat because they don't have a high-end camera market to protect. Canon does sell quite a lot of lenses to the eng market. But Panasonic just brought about a product the Af-100 that is supposed to cater for the dslr market (large sensor look). How happy will they be that a product costing 1/5 beats it in pure image quality. You would need to add an additional recorder to be able to compete.

The second view that Pany is getting free R&D, I am sure if tomorrow you gave the panasonic engineer the freedom they could build you a raw output camera in place of the af-100. Don't forget that these people are designing from hardware level, to raw, then encoder for these camera. They have all the knowledge it is just the marketing that is crippling it. The hack gh2 is only for a very niche market, itis not promoting in any way the brand. Even with all its powerness the gh2 is not even in the dslr video world shifting the balance of power from Canon. See how many of the Canon HDslr that are ready to make the shift?

Well played. Silicon Power does seem to be the best for our purposes (min write speed). Only $50 for 32gb

We're rolling tests at 110000000 today too. So far so good. Great shadows. Most amazing to me though is the mjpeg at 600 500 400 300 and laid down at 1080. Shadow detail that seems impossible for a camera this small, and resolution just below what we're getting from the AVCHD

You can't change the effect of 40+ years of Canon marketing overnight. People change once they realize that another brand does a better job, though there are some fan-boys where blind allegiance to their brand is everything.

...Myself, I hope that the coming GH-3 holds up well to the competition, but I am prepared to switch camera brands if something significantly better shows up.

Sandisk extreme is excellent with a 5 megabyte a second advantage and is also marginally more expensive. The Silicon power is no slouch and gives good value.

Footage?

can you share the patch for doing that, when you say testing 110000000 is that the FHD? thanks

Sorry guys asking for footage - a bit late here in the UK. I just shot my ugly mug which is not worth looking at and compared to a similiar shot I did a while back the difference was just incredible. Will do something tomorrow. Just so you know - I am getting 12 megabytes a second AVCHD!!!! Haven't tested with very high motion yet but the footage is very, very, very good. Almost convinces me to say forget the pains of HDMI capture.

Here are the patch settings I currently have and these are subject to testing in bright light with motion. Using the Silicon power 32 GB class 10 card as mentioned before.

Video Bitrate 24H=110000000
Video Bitrate 24L=88000000
Auto Quantizer for 1080 modes=4 - All to details
1080i50 and 1080p24 GOP Size=3

These are in the patches for tester settings
AVCHD Encoder

Frame buffer size -

1080p24 FB1=3133440
1080p24 FB2=3936092

Encoder frame limit

1080p24 Frame Limit=31457280

That's it. Good luck and remember - YMMV.

My Advice - It seems better to use MANUAL lenses or else you may constantly get the write error

loaded and tested it,looks great but why am I always getting 44 bit rate consistently indoors or outdoors ever since the auto quantizer was activated am puzzled,,,,does that mean thats the limit? in the previous ptool with kaes 65mbps patch i would get 60 bit rate

Well... with his settings all of my footage whether it's low light or decent light (have not shot outdoors yet) is hovering between 107 to 117 Mbps.

Panasonichave to make a consumer camera that will work on basic SD cards. They also have to stay within AVCHD standards. The GH2 was not crippled, just designed to work well for your average Joe. AF100 users could argue that they could have implemented a better codec, for their $5k, but that has nothing to do with the consumer GH2.

+1

Very sensible take.

EX mode with 110mb settings above at ISO 160. Average bitrate of 107mb. Has an insane amount of detail and no pulsing.

This was only stable on my fastest cards with leaving the lens cap on 10 seconds after pressing record.
