GH2 PTool v3.62D Released

Chris Brandin just posted the following explanation of the v3.62d firmware's new "Auto-Quantizer" feature:

"The Auto Quantizer allocates the additional bandwidth to different things. If you go towards "detail" more of the extra bandwidth is allocated to using less quantization of macroblocks - which means better shadow detail and smoother detail all around. If you go towards "motion" extra bandwidth is not allocated to accommodate lower quantization of macroblocks, rather it is allocated to encoding changes in the image more robustly - which means reduced stuttering, etc... They both improve quality, just in different ways. I have found that going a little more towards "detail" works quite nicely - the shadow detail is stunning."

I look forward to testing this soon!

(I wonder if adjusting this setting "toward detail" will smooth/reduce gradient banding artifacts?)

Woohoo the first 10 frame rubbish has been eliminated!
Too bad they are one day too late. I had a music video shoot on sunday... I could have used the black details... Anyway I may not have used it as I would have needed some testing first.

Slightly off topic: I always wondered what was the position of Panasonic on this hack. Are they planning on blocking it with updated like the jailbreak on iPhone, or are they thinking about integrating some discoveries to a future update, or they don't care enough, as long as you buy their cameras...
Is anyone working at Panasonic on these forums?

For all we know , Panasonic is behind the hack, helping it and/or funding it...or not at all.
Why not? News of hacked cameras seem to sell a lot of cameras. That's all that seems to matter.

Did I say that Panasonic is definitely behind the hack? No, I didn't.

Did I say it's in the realm of possibility that they have something to do with it? Yes, of course, it's possible.

Yah, I have always suspected that VK is on Panasonic's payroll. Now you have just confirmed it.....lol
Let me add that if Panasonic was helping the hack along; so what. I wouldn't feel duped or think it was a conspiracy.
If that makes it easier to get to the end result, makes no difference to me.

hmmmmm you should look at Vitaliy stance about Panasonic camera division and you would have a good idea how many are living in la la land. What this camera hack is showing to this world how those big corporation are crippling there tech so that they can milk you up. I don't know if anyone on this thread is a regular on perssonal-view, if not go and have a look. This little $ 900 plastic body camera is churning out 80+ mbit bitrate. Some are experimenting with more than 100+. How would panny explain that this $ 900, tiny plastic thing is churning like 3 to 4 times higher bitrate than its $ 4500 body. If they had any consideration about the hack gh2, they would not have put all the encryption etc to block it after the gh1 (which had none of these) was hacked.

I think panasonic feel satisfied so far. delaying the hack and seeing to it that all the main functions HD out, 25p and the tracking(cannot remember) thing seen at photokina are all still handicaped according to plan and the head technician will get his bonus as promised.

Panasonichave to make a consumer camera that will work on basic SD cards. They also have to stay within AVCHD standards. The GH2 was not crippled, just designed to work well for your average Joe. AF100 users could argue that they could have implemented a better codec, for their $5k, but that has nothing to do with the consumer GH2.

Maybe hacks are now part of the release cycle...heh-heh

Perhaps the reason that there has not been a firmware update is to let the beta testing happen first. i.e. "the hack"
Panasonic could release a desirable firmware patch that would negate the hack, so far, causing a headache for Vitaliy.
They haven't! Why is that? I know that there is more that they can give us, for example; AVCHD 1080 / 30p @ 24 mbps?
