Ptool for beginners / Ptool FAQ

What happens to the multiple quality settings on the camera after applying the bitrate (for AVCHD or MJPEG) patches? Is only the HQ and FHD settings affected by the changes, or do all of them become the same increased bitrate mode or ?? In other words, if I applied the AVCHD bitrate patch, would my "L" setting still give the same stock low quality or would it be the same as the HQ mode?

L mode is also AVCHD so you'd have to also up the mjpeg bitrate to affect it's performance. If you raise the AVCHD bitrate only the AVCHD modes are affected.
AFAIK

Uh, sorry but I still don't understand - basically what I'm asking is if I use the AVCHD bitrate patch, will my "L" mode (which is the lowest qual AVCHD setting) be affected or just the SH (highest quality 720p mode)? Do all the settings get shifted up proportionally or just one?

I've played around with this. The other modes usually don't really work, exhibiting strange artifacts etc... I think one of the reasons this new stuff works so well is that it's targeted towards the maximum, best modes of operation and there is no desire to determine whether other modes of operation are made better or worse. For example, if you put in the patches for 1080p AVCHD, the "lower" modes pretty much end up being broken (except for 720 mode, and even then only in some cases). Frankly, I don't have a problem with this, except that these other modes still show up in the configuration menus even though they can't be used.

The best way to look at this is to accept that these exercises are about achieving the best quality results rather than making all modes of operation better. Personally, I couldn't care less about making intrinsically crummy modes of operation incrementally better, so this is a tradeoff I am willing to make.

i have noticed in the ptools description for mpeg table values that it states that "values must be higher for higher quality" yet the better settings use values less than original even as low as Pappas's 24 value. Is this just a typo? should it be lower value gets higher quality?

Where can I find a list of the "alphabet" bitrate settings? C and D etc.? Are they spread in the threads? Would be a good sticky.

I updated my GF1’s firmware last Friday and I was able to get 28-30 mb/sec for AVC-HD with the “C” settings. However, I have tried just about every setting with the last two releases of Ptool and it no longer has any affect on the bit rate for AVC-HD.

Are the AVC-HD changes no longer working for GF1’s? The MJpeg 1080p settings are working perfectly for the GF1.

Open Ptool and inside select:
Video ajustment simplifeid-a)24000000 b)34000000 c)52000000
Overall bitrate aj....................
Limiting bitrate aj....................
you have A,B and C. D is in some thread...

with"C" setting FHD vs SH high detail foliage scene.
1080p i get 45473kbps
720p i get 13029kbps
this is with the exact same scene shot. shouldn't i be getting higher bitrate with 720?

thanks.

I modified my GF1 firmware and the results have been great using the Panasonic 14-140 HD lens. I'm averaging 30-32 mbits/s. However, with the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 lens I'm averaging around 20 to 21 mbits/s. Can a lens do this?
I only use Canon Prime lens (Manual) , will this effect my bitrate if I were to do the firmware?

After you use the new tool(version compare)

After you use the new tool(version compare)

What do I now tick, version increment?, what do I put there, version compare as well, or either or both and can I save as an earlier number? Tester13 has closed down, sick of everybody pestering him with low level stuff, oops.

I just noticed that the artifacts I was seeing in the lower modes in AVCHD mode D only show up in some players. Upon closer examination it looks like they are fine but they just don't play nice with PowerDVD, for example. I have no idea why this is. Sorry if I misdirected anybody.

No playback in Motion JPEG

No playback in Motion JPEG

I did the firmware update and everything works fine except for playback of Motion JPEG in camera. I get a "card error" on playback in camera. AVCHD plays back fine, though. Any thoughts?

Hi,
Is it possible to redo the first page and do a step by step tutorial? There is a video out there that explains this, increments and so forth but I think it would be great to have a tutorial step by step since they renamed this thread. Thanks

This is meaningless information without specifying what patches / values were applied.
True. Sorry. I used the following:

MJPEG E1 Quality = 400
MJPEG E1 Table = 103
MJPEG E2 Quality = 350
MJPEG E2 Table = 116
MJPEG E3 Quality = 250
MJPEG E3 Table = 120
MJPEG E4 Quality = 200
MJPEG E4 Table = 125
AVCHD Video Buffer = Select 40,000,000 from the drop down box
AVCHD Video Bitrate = 40000000
AVCHD Overall Bitrate = 50000000
AVCHD Limiting Bitrate = 70000000

The MJPEG records fine. I can play it back in the computer with no problem. When I try to play it in the GH1, I get the "card error" reading.

I'm new to this gh1 hack, been looking because I would like to get a GH1 as a studio "A" cam for a local tv show. I have a T2i that would be "B" cam.

Will the hack allow a 1080 29.97 mov I can flop on the timeline with my 29.97 T2i footy?

(sorry if this was asked before....I couldn't find it)

Is this like the "c" settings?
Also do you find it annoying not able to "playback" on the camera?
I don't think it would be a problem, huh?
