Ptool for beginners / Ptool FAQ

Valero, thank you very much for your answer. I am using ptool version 3.50d. I tried your method, but it did not help. I get the same result as described above. I am now really at a loss.

I tried to emulate your problem to see if something came up, but no luck...but on the other hand I solved my problem with version 50d. I found out that the original firmware that I downloaded is named: GH1__132.bin but since I did not want to get confused or mistakenly overwrite it, I put a comment on the file name and for some reason version 36 ignored it but version 50 took it as part of the file name. As soon as I deleted he comment and returned the original name of GH1__132.bin everything worked like a charm. I would not have solved this problem if it wasn't for yours. But double check that you have nothing similar to what I did, meanwhile I'll try something else,

Dram; I don't know if you've tried this but if you haven't, let's see if it works: Can you try another patch? this time just click on VERSION INCREMENT and enter 1 and also click PREVENT VERSION COMPARE then save it under: GH1__133.bin and see if it loads. This could reset to the original and maybe then you can do another patch.

Hello Valero
I am really grateful that you are trying so hard to help. Just returned from work and tried your new suggestion. Unfortunately no result. I even tried to reinstall the original Panasonic firmware GH1__132.bin, and got the same result. My camera seems stuck with the very first hack I applied. I found that the screen saying version up ongoing..." appears for a fraction of a second, then being replaced by the screen saying "please turn off the camera and then on again". When do that, the whole thing is just repeated over and over again.
Could yo do me a favor? When I reformat my SD-card using the format-command in the menu of the GH1, I get the following file structure on the card: 3 folders called DCIM, MISC and PRIVATE, as well as one file called autorun.inf. Would you check if you get the same, when you reformat your SD-card?
When I run an antivirus scan on this formatted card, my antivirus software (Eset NOD32) tells me that autorun.inf is a threat and asks me if I want to delete it. However, this could be a false positive alarm. If not, then some strange virus might be tricking me.
By the way, if I try to delete autorun.exe, I get a message saying "Cannot delete autorun. It is being used by another program. Close any program that might be using the file and try again." Rather strange.

In the meantime, I discovered that autorun.inf is invading each and every USB device that I connect to the computer. It seems to be a virus indeed, which my antivirus software (supposedly one of the best on the market) is unable to detect. So, I have a problem.

Many virus scanners won't allow externally connected devices like drives, SD cards, .. to run automatically. They block the autorun.inf.
I don't have an autorun.inf on my SD card because i use a mac, so i can't say whether that file should be there or not. The rest of the folder structure on your SD card is similar to my card, formatted by my GH1

The file autorun.inf definetly does not belong there, the other three DO. Have you tried to reformat the SD card in your computer and then reformat back in the GH1? I would also download a new GH1__132.bin from the Panasonic web site.

Thank you, valero and johnnym, for your feedback. I have now confirmed that the autorun.inf on the SD card was generated by malware (a trojan). A few days ago, there had been a massive attack of various of these on my computer. I finally managed to clean them using Malwarebytes, but they seem to have left some damage. The GH1 does not accept any firmware updates anymore, keeping its behaviour described above. I am afraid that the malware has damaged the camera for good.
When I try to update the firmware, I am getting error code 2B00005, which the service manual says means "firmware update error". However, the manual does not say, how to resolve the issue.
I did a quick format of the SD card in my computer, but it did not help. After work, I'll do a full format of the card and then try again. Terrible situation. I was hardly able to sleep last night.

if indeed it is malware, it CANNOT affect camera. your camera isn't running windows, so it can't do any harm to it. that's like saying a virus built to infect windows can infect a mac. don't format your card in the computer, it needs to be formatted in camera. start from the beginning. instead install panasonic's factory firmware and try a new patch.

Hello again
And thank you, Car30, for your suggestions and for calming me down. I hadn't thought about the fact that this malware only can affect Windows. (sigh of relief). I had tried your ideas already various times, but it did not solve the issue. After cleaning the malware, I finally did a full format of the SD card in the computer, then reformatted the card in the camera. That did the trick. Now the GH1 accepts firmware updates again.
Problem solved.
Thanks again to everyone.

Glad to have you back in the hacker's team

I've been having the exact same problem for the last few days (suddenly not being able to run the hack) and was too embarrassed to mention it lol. bloody malware, at least it's an easy fix. Finally back to hacking i come :D

Does anyone know if the the new UHS-I 90 mbs Class 10 SDHC-cards released recently by Toshiba are compatible with the GH13?

Does anyone have the older versions (specifically 3.4) of ptools that they could send me if I PM them my email?

thanks

6.) Save your file name "like" example shown

Perhaps a little explanation of "like" is welcome:
- Start with the camera name, for example GH1
- Then two underscore characters are required: __
- Add the new version number that follows from the increment value in the PTool screen print above

It would help to also draw an ellips around the Modified Version Number below the input value for the Version Increment Number in that screen print, because this is the new version number that is part of the name of the saved firmware file.

Although the original hyperlinks do work when clicked, it looks nicer with the asterisks at the end excluded.

I've just managed to hack my GH1 for the first time! I selected PAL/NTSC switchable. How do I switch back and forth between them? I can't see anything in the menu.

i got a japanese set gh-1, after firmware update to official version of V1.3, these is no longer language option for me to set it to English. everthing now is in japanese! what should i do now? can ptool resolve this issue? need some advise. thank you.

Hey,

I've always checked prevent version compare and version increment. I have also just left the version on version 1. I guess this has had the effect of reverting me back to the original hack. Is this correct?

What happens if you never change the version or rehack with the version as set to 1?

That's exactly what I've been doing to, with two different firmware updates (Lpowell's Peak performance and High Reliability patches) on 2x cheap SD cards, which I can switch between at anytime without worrying about version increments... surely this would be the best way of working? or am I missing something too?
