F3: Prores 4444 13 bit from F3 to SD Pix recoder now!

Great. I'll have an article at some point today as well (already submitted and waiting for editorial to post it).

Something to remember when doing firmware update to Pix-- audio input will revert to external audio and trigger will revert to switch closure. Be certain to check those menu settings if you shoot something other than those defaults.

Mitch,

I just ran a test with a Sony PMW-F3 and a Sony SR-R1 recorder, and it was possible for the Sony F3 to send a 1080 59.94p signal over single 3G, and for the SR-R1 recorder to record it, and play it back.

It would be really cool if they would update the F3 to do 12 bit out the A port in 1.5!

Not likely though, since Mr. Crithary has already said 12 bit on the F5/55 is probably not going to happen because they want to save it for the F65.

Anything could happen, though, I suppose. They've changed their mind before.

I will post again, can I record a ProRes 444 1080p 25fps through single F3 A port to Pix240, with this new Pix feature?
it will be a great feature to my 95% assignments.

you can, IF you have the CBK-RGB01 upgrade on your camera.

AFAIK, F3 does 60p only through dual link output.

Just tested, setting f3 to 3g rgb444 output works like a charm with pix240 via single cable. Pix detects input signal and shows it's 10 bit rgb. Did a quick test, didn't notice any substancial visible changes recording prores hq 422 or 4444, i guess that would come up when keying :)

F3 outputs 444 10-bit with paid RGB upgrade so when you say "PIX shows it's 10 bit rgb" can anyone answer of Pix is defaulting down to ProRes 422HQ 220mbps 10-bit, or is the pix recording 444 10-bit or 12-bit (padded) mode?

F3 can't ouput 12 bits. I do have paid upgrade, so camera itself outputs 10bit rgb, which pix detecs and writes into 444 12 bit prores

Yes we know F3 is only 10-bit but prores 444 is known only to be 12-bit and first you said pix detected it as 10-bit but now you are saying it recorded as 12-bit - so which is it? My question is, is there really a 10-bit 444 mode or does the pix switch down to 422 10-bit as per the option seen in the pix menu?

ProRes 444 supports both 10 and 12 bit to my knowledge, as a feature of the codec. So I'd be surprised if the Pix would bump down to HQ if it only sees 10bit.

Even if the Pix wasn't so smart as to make a distinction, I'd imagine the easiest thing for it to do is just pad the 10 bit with zeros and put it in a 12bit can.
